The Get Up Kids @ Leeds Festival 2002

By Suzanne Hutchinson

The Get Up Kids are hailed by some as the only band worth the emo moniker. They do turn out catchy guitar laden tunes, but their sound is a lot poppier than strict emo and all the better for it. The keyboards and harmonic choruses on many of their songs soften what could be a much darker sound. New single 'Unwired' is introduced as being "quite good" and indeed it is. 'Can't Find Kansas' is acoustic-y and comes across as the perfect festy choon with the lyrics "We laughed away the sunburn". Chance would be a fine thing this damp weekend. 'Forgive Me' sees the tent swaying and singing along to the chorus. The Get Up Kids do stand out from the rest of the crop of new bands this year; they are worth getting up for.
