The Horrible Children @ Joseph's Well

By Bryony King

The first band to take the stage - in front of an already large crowd- were Diverse, who seemed to go down well with the audience. I have said before this band have great potential and seem extremely committed to their music. Their material was excellent and the singer had an amazingly strong voice, which sounded remarkably good, once you hear them it would be a challenge to tear yourself away. After all the times I have seen them play I still find it hard to believe they are still not signed. This is a band that in my opinion definitely has talent and the potential to go far. All in all a terrific band.

Next on were Urban Eyez, quite a disappointment after Diverse I'm afraid to say but a good band none the less. The vocalist had a rather unique, distinctive voice but it wasn't annoying. The band lacked energy and charisma on stage. It was quite easy to switch off through them. Their music wasn't at all bad but it wasn't a captivating performance. I think this is something they need to work on for future performances.

The main support for the night was All Its Worth. The four-piece are quite young with a male guitarist and the rest of the band being female, it is always good to see females in bands and although young they are confident and comfortable on stage. The band has definitely improved since their last performance. They are full of energy and easily draw the attention of the audience with catchy tunes and a doubtless presence. Becky's vocals are sensational and it was great to be able to hear them for once. She certainly plays to the strengths of her voice. Although they were a good band there is still room for improvement an interesting performance all the same.

Last but not least, the headliners for the night - The Horrible Children, featuring Math Hill and Paul Percival from One Minute Warning. They were indisputably the best band of the evening. They provided an invigorating, energetic performance. It makes a refreshing change to see the use of keyboards as they seem to be so rarely used in bands today. The band created a unique, fresh, inspiring sound and I'm not the only one who has said that Math's vocals have greatly improved since the days of Japanaro. They were a hit with the audience and really seemed to be enjoying themselves on stage. I have never seen drumming quite like it and I don't mean that in an at all bad way. Very entertaining! Their original material was superb, as was their cover of Suspicious Minds, a great song to finish on. I would recommend that you should not miss their next gig. A fantastic performance!
