Burning Brides @ Cockpit

By Dave Sugden

Mullets. When did they become fashionable again? They're all around me. I nervously feel that I'm being punished for having a chuckle at mulletmadness.com a few days earlier, or perhaps I've been warped into a parallel universe where all the rock chick style guides insist on one. Back to reality and my intrigue reveals the answer I feared: they came back into fashion over six months ago and I am now officially uncool, old and out of touch with the music youth of today. And I'm bald; perhaps it's jealousy but if I'm going to be accused of having a dated outlook then I'm going to drag others down with me. Cue 90s noizenik darlings The Cribs, who rattle off some excellent songs with more than a flirtatious wink in the direction of Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth and Pavement. Their opener sounds like The Strokes; however, a quick look at flyers for The Session reveals that even The Strokes have become old news. Maybe I'm not alone and out of touch after all. These indie-cool new kids do good a tribute to J Mascis and "Freakscene" was always a favourite of mine. Next up are My Red Cell from Wales who do lots of noise mixed with lots of yelping. I like. Mullet girl does not. For a brief moment they sound like Mclusky. Very good. Burning Brides top the bill, and for thirty minutes I forget about my newfound fascination with hairstyles and marvel instead at dirty, rock and roll with chunky great riffs. Some songs come from the "Fall of the Plastic Empire" long player; others do not. All the best songs were written with a little assistance from the Stooges, Pixies and Sonic Youth. Rawk. Noise. And Dimitri sports big, manly 90's hair... nice!
