The stepping-stones to music industry prosperity have been marked. Radio airplay? Check. Favourable review in NME and Melody Maker? Check. Chart success? Check. Sell out shows? Check. Stalker?
"We've got a stalker", announces Stan, guitar noisemonger for the quirky yet tuneful Leeds five piece. As the band prepare for their first release since hitting the UK indie charts at the dizzy heights of number 24, talk has more recently focussed on the unusual antics of a fan.
"Whoever it is has set up a separate Mama Scuba website and has registered the name with all of the band listing sites. We thought it was funny at first, but they've even been using Wes's name. It's hard to look professional at times".
The band's return has been awaited. A few years ago Melody Maker announced Mama Scuba as Top Tip For 1999 and Radio One awarded a prized Single Of The Week. Yet while fans eagerly search listings for possible live shows, the band have been busy recording their debut album.
The album incorporates a live mix feel into over a year of studio recording at Billiard Rooms. "We recorded 15 songs, which will be reduced to between 8 and 10 on the final version. They're all new songs, some very strong tunes embedded within chaos", Stan adds.
Mama Scuba flirt with the poppier side of alternative guitar rock and have often been compared to The Pixies and Velvet Underground. Early in their career they shared a drummer with Clinic and are now hoping to share the same success, reclaim their chart placing and pick up the more accustomed fan on the way.
