Review of Jist's CD "I Say"

Jist: I Say

Northern Ireland's loss is Manchester's gain regards Jist, originating in the former and decamping to the latter. With a blues influenced back-bone the band mix in the best elements of funk (i.e. no slap bass) and garage rock keeping it dirty and fresh.

"I Say" is a riff-based blues-rock stride along of a tune, ending in a big gritty guitar rendition of the main hook. Backed superbly with some sweet Hammond it's a monster. It's reminiscent of recent finds such as The 22-20's and The Blueskins. The b-sides work well as a supporting cast showing off the bands other forte's. "Microscope" is an excellent stutter of a song carried by some stern bongo and ride cym work, while "Liberty Cap" demonstrates a slow paced brooding side to the band.

With more tunes like "I Say" we will all be getting the Jist!
