Deadstring Brothers @ New Roscoe

By Holden DeForge

Looking like Matt Bellamy and sounding like Mick Jagger, Kurt Marshke leads Deadstring Brothers through this evening's set with excellent vocals and some chirpy banter with a lukewarm crowd. The songs get a good reception but people don't seem to feel like talking with Marshke. Regardless, Deadstring Brothers carry on as you imagine they would in front of nobody or in front of 10,000. At times they are a rock band with country leanings, at others a country band waiting to burst out. At all times they are a great band with great songs.

The pedal steel, tinkling keys and a tight rhythm section accompany Marshke and his front of stage companion, a sassy female backing singer who adds warmth and depth to the vocal melodies. Accomplished as individuals and excellent as a band, Deadstring Brothers sound as fine live as they do on record, if not finer.
