Butterfinger @ Joseph's Well
By Charlotte HirdAfter debuting on a handful of live shows the band have a healthy C.V of support slots with Silver Ginger 5, The Jellys and playing with Terrorvision at their last ever gig (which incidentally was their first) Butterfinger are absolutely amazing.
Tonight they erupt into a monster of an opener 'Disappear'. And from then on you are transfixed by how breath taking they actually are. Sounding like the offspring of The Almighty and Whatever, Butterfinger have some really meaty rock tunes. They have melodic yet bulky riffs - sort of a heavy rock n' roll. With jaw gapping guitar solos (yes they do still exist!) the band comprises of three extremely talented musicians. They have well-structured songs containing more hooks than a coat rack with the likes of 'If I was you', 'Time to say goodbye' and 'This feeling' that are infecting, burly tunes containing a knack of captivating the listener so you can't get them out of your head.
"Feel free to come forward - I will spit on you!", frontman Milly encourages the crowd to get more intimate. The band appear relaxed on stage to say they have only been up there a few times and have a phenomenal stage presence, Milly does rock star poses, punk leaps while Bren dances shoeless. 'It's you' and 'Run in Circles' are rocking songs with robust vocals and supersonic tempos that'll get you on the dance floor. How can you possibly stand still listening to Butterfinger? They attempt a bit of irony by constantly repeating: "We're Butterfinger from Bradford". So is that why Terrorvision split, they were scared of the local competition?
'Little things' is a bouncy happy-go-lucky pop number with an extremely catchy chorus; "It's the little things you do that annoy me, like when I watch the game you turn off the T.V." The enraged 'Psycho Bitch', complete with audience participation, winds up a flawless set.
Once they exit the stage you have the chance to pick your jaw up from the floor after a mind blowing musical experience. They possess vintage rock tunes that linger on well after you have left the venue. Butterfinger are the phoenix rising out of the ashes of Terrorvsion's downfall for the local music scene and to say that they are a relatively new band it's outstanding how good they are. They are just what the doctor ordered (sorry about the pun!) to give British rock music a well-deserved kick up the arse! The only question left looming in your mind is: "Why are these not signed?"
