This hardworking fanzine has furnished us from its Bradford catchment area with an 18 band/artist compilation that isn't going to be forgotten. Early in the sequence there's particular strength in the work of Fourteen Corners and of Laika Dog. The last third of the listening begins and ends with a couple of trustworthy bringers of radiance, Wilful Missing and The Somatics, both using the same song-title - and a far better insight into the former than the latter as it turns out. Meanwhile from the merry metal of Laboratory Noise to the spacey drift of Falconetti, via the stimulating menace of The Loved Ones (UK) or Jon Jones and the Beatniks Movement; in the teetering individuality of Laura Groves and in the committed authenticity of other contributors there's stuff that should be heard beyond the bounds of a limited edition.
General quality and breadth of idiom could in the future get this hour's entertainment mistaken for a long-term retrospective carefully chosen from a safe distance rather than a current selection of 18 acts that came out top from nearly 150 applicants. And 'Escape From Monotony' carries a significant sub-text: get into the habit of looking west towards Bradford, because Leeds isn't automatically the right local city for your next fix of good fresh music.
