By Tom MacdonaldGlasgow's Eska should have gone down a storm. Their dynamic noise, all stop-start rhythms and waves of sound should have had the crowd in awe, but they simply stood and stared. Largely instrumental, their sound brings to mind an early Mogwai, whilst drummer Willie was absolutely phenomenal throughout the set.
Ikara Colt don't impress tonight. Their Fall-esque punk sound gets no crowd reaction either, but not for the same reasons as Eska. Tonight, they were simply slightly plain. The songs tended to merge together after a while, and it was a blessing they only got a twenty minute set.
It looks like the crowd have been saving their energies. Idlewild stroll on to a huge cheer, and play a fantastic set, equally balanced between their four releases. No, Roddy isn't as mad as he used to be, and yes, the new stuff does sound slightly REM-ish. But with songs like 'Little Discourage', 'You Held The World In Your Arms', 'When I Argue I See Shapes' and 'These Wooden Ideas', who's complaining? An impressive light show and film projection add to the whole experience, the phrase 'Support Your Local Poet' now etched in the minds of many young fans. Brilliant.
