Review of King Creosote's CD "Home in a Sentence"

King Creosote: Home in a Sentence

Upon uploading this CD to my iTunes library I was bemused to see the track entitled as 'The Track of My Tears' by 'Jimmie's Chicken Shack'. King Creosote, for those unaware of the artist, is Scottish singer Kenny Anderson who is a good friend of KT Tunstall. This single is from his current album 'Bombshell' and sounds like a sensitive Snow Patrol and Coldplay.

The song is opened with piano and a simple guitar riff before the King himself enters with his guitar and is linked by a raw riff. The King sounds like a Scottish Chris Martin; he explores high and low pitch with his unique vocal style. Through a series of climaxes, we get used to the chord structure to a point where we can anticipate what will happen next. This could be seen as a sign of someone who knows how to develop ideas in a pleasing manner. The general manner of the song is a feel-good track that will grow more and more over time. After about 4 listens this song starts to make sense, even though some words are lost in the thick accent.

King Creosote is doing what Scottish artists should be doing by reaching the sensitive folk and passing it down to the new generations through a wrapping in indie. He is certainly adopting a 'think local, act global' ideal with tracks like these. Though it may not be the best track to choose from 'Bombshell' it certainly demonstrates what King Creosote.
