10 000 things

Search for 10 000 things performed on Monday, 8th September 2008.

10 000 things

Your term - 10 000 things - is very common.

We have limited the results to 300 articles.

10,000 Things: Foodchain EP

Imagine Status Quo with occasional bongos. Got it? Ok, that's half way to the sound of 10,000 Things.

10,000 Things: s/t

10,000 Things have always had a reputation as a fearsome live band. Who am I to question that? The Things appear to be living out the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll dream to great success.

10,000 Things: Titanium

10,000 Things are the band you wanted to be in when you were a kid. The Jim'll Fix It chance to play dirty sleazy riffs and wail boisterous, filthy lyrics until your lungs bleed.

10,000 Things record debut EP for Domino and head out on UK tour...

10,000 Things have just completed the recording of their first EP for Domino Records. The EP - for release late 2003 or early 2004 - was produced by the legendary Phill Brown (worked on classic Stones, Bob Marley, Hendrix).

Dirty Pretty Things @ Cockpit

There's the possibility of a successful band here, but it's unlikely to be named Louie. I mean, it could form from Louie, or component members thereof, but for now all we see before us is a band going through the stage of self-finding, identification and formation.

Do Me Bad Things: Whats Hideous

I wasn't sure what to expect from a band with a listed six vocalists and a support slot with The Darkness under their belts.

10,000 Things @ The Vine

Unfortunately I missed the opening band but arrived just in time for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This band is a six piece playing a kind of punked-up Faces/Stones rock'n'roll with no less than three gutarists (for some reason).

10,000 Things to release a new single and album in April...

10,000 Things release their single "Dogsbody" on Monday, 11th April. The single comes on 7" format b/w "You're Nicked" and on CD with "RIP Soppy Mate" and "Teeny Bit Mental", whilst the band's self-titled debut album will be released the following Monday (18th April).

Do Me Bad Things @ Cockpit

Imagine a world where Axl is king, and Wayne and Garth are the court jesters. Time stands still beyond the Eighties, and Francis Rossi and Lemmy have a love child.

Aeon @ Royal Park Cellars

The first instalment in what was to be another very memorable night. 10,000 Things arrived with a nice solid bass, wild guitar sounds, decent vocals, a sharp percussionist and some disappointing drums, but left me feeling somewhat thwarted by a distinct lack of thought.

Superboss: Things Will Get Better

Many will remember 2004 as the year the music world lost one of its most admired characters. His memory can be somewhat celebrated in this eclectic effort by Superboss where amongst the dance beats and soothing synth lies a number of carefully selected samples of the great man.

Being 747 @ HiFi Club

Ahhh, you can't beat a bit of a shuffle in the late afternoon, and this month Mr. Rob Paul Chapman's showcase again failed to disappoint.

10,000 Things to release a double A-side single later this month...

The next single from Leeds' 10,000 Things will be a double A-side featuring the tracks Titanium and Can't Do Nothing.

Do Me Bad Things: Time for Deliverance

Okay so I'm heading into this review with a kinda biased viewpoint of the band to begin with after seeing their piss poor performance at the Reading festival this year.

Muse @ Leeds Festival 2006

Following an intense two-day judging process, the fifteen successful acts for Bright Young Things 2008 have been announced today.

Mumm-Ra: These Things Move in Threes

I tend to be a little wary of bands like Mumm-Ra, who take up instruments with the sole purpose of being in a band to pass the time - something all the members of this group admit to.

Calling all young musicians! Bright Young Things 2008 announced.

Are you the next big thing to hit the charts? Think you could follow in the footsteps of Corinne Bailey Rae or The Music?

The Last Three Months Are Blank...? Scott Silverlode Writes....

Good morning, noon or night to all you Loders out there. Through the most undemocratic of processes I have been nominated to supply with your long-over due mouthful of all things Silverlode. Various Artists: Bright Young Things 2002

The Bright Young Things CD for 2002 is being distributed by Leeds City Council in April as a free addition to the glossy and widely available Leeds Guide.

The Killers: All These Things That I've Done

The Killers are probably the most aptly-named band around at the moment, after having whipped, bludgeoned and slayed their way across the British music scene with sharp ties and nicely-pressed trousers.

Various Artists: Bright Young Things 2007

Fifteen quite individual tracks - and yet there's more than a hint of overall unity to this. Not sameness: far from it, but a feel that it wouldn't be impossible to cook up a narrative thread plotting the journey from minute 1 to minute 59, and so award concept album status as well as whatever other accolades are coming to BYT 2007.

Various Artists: Bright Young Things 2002

I was optimistic on what delights were to be found upon this Leeds City Council funded CD sampler of the bands in this year's celebration of Leeds' best young musical talent.

ROGER DAVIES

"There is a potentially huge talent emerging in our midst - Roger Davies. His new songs tell of life in Huddersfield, amongst other things, and are all delivered with extraordinary, understated humour and delightful turns of phrase." Joe Grint (Tykes News, Summer 2007)

Interview: Daniel Fell

Sound checks and vocal warm ups came to the forefront this week as the first of the 15 bands taking part in Leeds Leisure Services 'Bright Young Things 2003', took to the stage for their debut in the Crypt of the Town Hall.

Repairman: Here We Are Now EP

It's clear to see, or rather hear, why Repairman have become touring companions of both Gomez and Athlete of late.

Band Profile: these.walls.have.ears

Experimental / alternative / moody elcetro / pop with multi-layered vocals

Band Profile: Brookroyd Lane

4-piece indie rock band from Dewsbury

Leeds bands announced for Carling Stage at Leeds Festival 2004...

Carling Stage bands have been announced this week for Leeds Festival 2004 and the line up includes a number of local bands.

Lou Barlow: Holding Back the Year

About to embark, or currently on - depending on when you read this - a pretty miniscule tour of the UK is alt rock granddaddy Lou Barlow.

Dinosaur Pile-up @ Leeds Festival 2008

Matt Bigland, guitar and vocals, Tom Dornford-May, bass guitar, and Steve Wilson drums are the relatively new Dinosaur Pile-up.

The Conspirators @ Joseph's Well

The Conspirators are a product of the magic of communication; either by word of mouth or internet, somehow these five people came together - maybe it was fate, maybe it was chance...

The Ryes: How Come Loretta

Having heard a lot of good things about The Ryes it was with great interest I loaded their CD into my iTunes.

Elliot Minor: Still Figuring Out

Elliot Minor are now firm favourites on the iPods of the teen-Britain. Having supported Fall Out Boy, playing Download, and obviously hailing from Yorkshire, (the latter obviously being the most important) the five-piece are surely set for big things.

Mary-Jane: What I Came Here For

I first heard Mary-Jane on Manifesta's (the people behind the now sadly deceased Bar Phono's Pussy Whipped club night) brilliant little compilation of all things riot grrl in Yorkshire - the not so catchily titled - ...and besides everyone knows it's not just boys fun.

The Breech: I am New Mexico

A hectic lifestyle means that it has taken me a good week or two to actually get round to playing this CD.

Band Profile: 90 Spaces

Dani Cooper - vocals Grant Woodfine - keyboard Jonny Pearce - guitar / tambourine It all started back in the winter of '04.

Brand New: Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades

Long Island's Brand New are, errm, brand new to me... funny git, bet they get that all the time. No seriously, I haven't listened to their music before - even though this is now the second UK single from their second album release - and it is the remixes and acoustic versions of songs that caught my attention at first.

The Plight: s/t

There are plenty of things to like about The Plight's debut release. Whether it be the darkly themed artwork, the knowingly sarcastic lyrics or the old skool riffage, there is something here for everyone to get into.

Dogs Die In Hot Cars: Godhopping

Uh oh. The NME strikes again. This week, they are proclaiming that DDIHC are "one of the most exciting new bands in the UK".

Band Profile: Reverend And The Makers

2007 saw Reverend And The Makers garnering fans from almost every quarter. They achieved gold status with their top 5 album "The State Of Things" still residing in the top 40, had 3 hit singles (including 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World') sell out tours and festivals appearances and 2008 promises to be even bigger.

Dionysus @ Feast & Firkin

Tonight sees the coming together of a trio of Leeds bands, including newcomers Living Thing, recent winners of the Bright Young Things 2000 competition Insense, and headliners Dionysus, the relative veterans on the night.

Solus Locus @ Leeds Festival 2008

A violin bow on a guitar is no longer an interesting sight. As an opening gambit by a new band it's even a bit ponderous.

Kharma 45 @ Rio's

Rio's is a decent sized venue that looks well-suited to hosting live bands; when Kharma 45 opened their set with "Come On" there was only around 3 dozen people present yet their powerful sound filled the venue giving the impression of a far larger crowd.

Bujidao: Faith and Fear

This sounds a bit like acoustic-folk versions of stadium rock songs. Fat choruses sit amongst some delicate arrangements of piano and guitar.

DIRTY ROBBERS GUITARIST SACKED!

the dirty robbers fire their guitarist

The Wedding Present @ Holmfirth Picturedrome

Part one of a two-off pair of gigs to celebrate the release of the bands ample 6 CD box set of all things Peel and BBC, sees the Weddoes gracing Holmfirth for the first time ever.

All Star 69ers: 568A (demo version)

Deemed by the illustrious Leeds City Council as "Bright Young Things" I was quite looking forward to hearing what the Leeds Music Scene of tomorrow had to offer by the way of the All-star 69ers.

Grandmaster Gareth: The Party Sounds Of Grandmaster Gareth

Give this man a minute and he'll give you a melody. He'll give you a surreal story in sixty seconds. He'll even give you a bonus track that's half as long as the album itself!

JD73 @ The Wardrobe

The buzz of anticipation hangs heavy in The Wardrobe as JD73 take to the stage to make their debut. It's the culmination of a year's hard work for Dan Goldman, the funk-fingered Morcheeba keyboardist responsible for JD73's distinctive brand of Electro-funk, and if tonight's reaction is anything to go by, good times are ahead.

Ashley Hicklin & The Troubadours sign a worldwide publishing deal with EMI

Ashley Hicklin & The Troubadours have this week announced a worldwide publishing deal with EMI. The band were previous winners of the council-led initiative Bright Young Things and have been featured on Look North and BBC Leeds.

Hobo Jungle @ Mixing Tin

Things get loud when Hobo Jungle take to the stage after what was billed as an acoustic night at Mixing Tin.

Aqute Couch @ Joseph's Well

Another acoustic night at Joseph's Well and it's noticeable how popular these nights are becoming with around fifty or so sitting and standing in the candlelit venue.

Band Profile: Tacoma

Tacoma are a local four piece made up of Kenny Harkis:-guitarist, songwriter Marc Britton:- Vocals, Bass Jonny Clarke:- Drums Andy Hollings :- Keys Over the last 12 months things have started to pick up for Tacoma.

Interview: Benjamin Wetherill

In a music scene as wide and varied as Leeds is at the moment, you're bound to get the odd one or two who just seem so captivating, so unique and so... "where the fuck did this guy come from?"

The Glitterati: Back In Power

Hmmm... so funnily enough it appears on this evidence that this lot were floppy-haired indie kids in glam metal headcases' clothing all along then.

Local music hopefuls aired on BBC radio...

Leeds/Bradford band, FineApple, will appear on the BBC 'Raw Talent' radio show hosted by Allen Raw as part of their follow up to participating successfully in one of the UK's biggest talent contests 'Bright Young Things'.

Herrod @ Packhorse

Not being witness to the rebirth of Chevron on Tuesday (jazz odyssey, anyone?) here I am, two days two late with the latest news as usual, and wondering why I only ever seem to write reviews of Chevron and Herrod gigs.

New Cinerama Peel Session to be played in June...

Cinerama have recorded a new session for John Peel's Show, and this will be transmitted by BBC Radio 1 between 10pm and midnight and on the 'net at www.bbc.co.uk/radio1 on Wednesday 4th June.

The Argonauts: Telling Stories

What is it with the British? We complain in winter that it isn't summer, then when summer hits it's "too hot", then when autumn and winter roll around again, we release perfect summertime music.

The Pattern @ Leeds Festival 2001

Obsessed with that late-60s (perhaps more English) vibe of things, Oakland, California's The Pattern certainly take a look backwards in their performance today.

Band Profile: Monty Casino

Patrick - Guitar, Keyboard, Vocals Kai - Bass, Vocals Jed - Drums, Vocals Monty Casino are a 3-piece Bradford Band who realise that a good pop song is all you need to have a good time.

Band Profile: Danny Laycock

Accessible Prog/Psych/Jazz/Blues/Acoustic fun.

The Downfall @ Joseph's Well

First up tonight are Imodiom; to say the least they are unprepared. After an unsure start the set quickly went downhill.

Good Shoes: We Are Not The Same

With this CD comes a challenge, in three stages. Each level increases in difficulty. Are you ready? They are as such.

Band Profile: Widgykeff

The band has been going for a few years and we have recently got a new drummer. Things are going great with the band, we have just had a revamp of the whole set and have some live recordings just added to our Myspace page.

Exit 52: Dandelion EP

Ah the theremin. Not since 'Good Vibrations' have I heard such magnificent use of the instrument. Opening track on this four track EP, and aptly enough the title track, 'Dandelion' thumps along with its array of kitsch 1960s instruments, its sleazy guitar riff and its myriad of churning organs, booming drums and a vocalist that sounds suspiciously like Jason Pierce.

All Star 69ers: Transition

The opening guitar induces a wince, the shaky drumbeat turns the wince into a grimace and as the vocals come in teeth grind until there's nothing but flesh.

DJ Scotch Egg @ Brudenell Social Club

As expected from a night run by omnipresent and ever-insane Leeds musicians / promoters / general busybodies Adam Benbow-Browne (Café Adam, Ad Hoc) and Matt Reid (Chickenhawk, The Grand March, ex-Whores Whores Whores), things get off to an unusual start with a rabbit playing Street Fighter in the middle of the room.

Juliette & The Licks: Sticky Honey

Movie star moving into singing blah blah blah. It's been done before and it's been done badly. But Juliette Lewis sure does have a passion for singing her mind.

Five O'Clock Heroes: Speak Your Language

'Speak Your Language' by Five O'Clock Heroes kicks off in the best possible form with the ear-Prozac of 'Judas.' This song will make you instantly fall in love with frontman's Antony Ellis' addictively angular voice and the band's talent for mixing awkward indie with just the right amount of pop, to create something that's original, but accessible.

Black Mountain College: Bright by the Sea

Having earned the prestigious title of 'Pick of the week' on C4 Teletext, Bright Mountain College arrive with a very nicely packaged CD, some epic songs and an ambitious, bold stance on things.

The Lost 45s release new EP "Legends"...

Leeds' premier beat combo The Lost 45s released their eagerly awaited new EP this week. Entitled Legends and recorded at Tawny Close Studios the EP features three tracks of high octane classic pop - Legends, Russian Roulette and Katmandu.

Impure: 42 Miles In This Direction

This first stab from Impure is everything to be expected from ones so young and nothing more: ideas, attempted emulation, poor musicianship, ambition, and naivety.

Duels release "Pressure On You" on 7th November

Duels have announced the release of their second single - their debut for Nude Records - to be released on Monday 7th November.

Cherryfalls: Winter/Winter

In the fallout from Radiohead's The Bends I fell in love with this genre, big melodies from bands with lead singers who probably sent Jeff Buckley lyrics to their ex girlfriends to let them "know how they're feeling".

Underoath: Define the Great Line

It's hard to know where some bands' safety zones start and end. The balance between not pushing hard enough and regurgitating the same old tired lines versus trying too many different things and attempting one giant leap for musickind, is a hard one to define.

Blue Sky Project: Smiles

Leeds' latest progressive-alt-rock band, Blue Sky Project, show plenty of promise with this record yet generally fall just short in delivering the quality goods expected of a band fronted by enigmatic singer / songwriter / guitarist / promoter / label boss Lewis Denby.

Trash Heap Heroes: Lets Go!! EP

Trash Heap Heroes contacted me a few months ago to check out their website. It was nothing to write home about, but ok.

Nature Has Patterns: Untitled

For someone raised on guitar music, the whole concept of electronic music doesn't always sit well with me.

Interview: Mama Scuba

Dave Sugden asks about their new record label and forthcoming single release

South: A Place In Displacement

One of those bands who seem to have been ekeing out a living as perennial outsiders despite a clutch of pretty damn good tunes over the course of their two albums so far ("Colours In Waves" and "Paint The Silence" especially), it's unfortunately difficult to see South's forthcoming third album changing things.

Kinch to release their debut single on the Halo UK label

Kinch, a young indie-pop band from the Halton area of Leeds, has just been signed by London-based indie label Halo UK and expect their first single, the double A-side 'Old Fashioned Love' / 'Everybody's Talking About It', to be released in July.

Wilful Missing: Untitled

There's some really good talent here: in the playing, the singing and the songwriting. As Kingsley Amis said about some other very pleasing things, 'I'm clear on why I like them, thanks; but why do I like them so much?' The answer has to be a subtle intensity in Wilful Missing's often fragile-sounding songs written and sung by Sam Kipling, with a range of well-controlled instruments in the hands of guitarist Sam Lawrence and bass player Albert Freeman.

Cay @ Cockpit

The Kerrang tour comes to Leeds and brings with it three of the latest bands who are riding high on the crest of rave reviews and publicity.

Band Profile: Matt Burnside

Leeds Solo artist performing acoustic versions of the songs he writes.

All My Friends Are Dead @ Mixing Tin

Two things struck me when All My Friends Are Dead started playing. Just where the hell did these guys come from, and what took them so long?

The Bed: Soma Riot Wave Machine

Bursting open in a wave of distorted guitars and firecracker drumming "Soma Riot Wave Machine" opens promisingly.

The Terminals @ Escobar (Wakefield)

Mother always said, "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all". With that in mind perhaps I should just progress directly to talking about Jack Afro.

Dolores: Untitled

I'm intrigued. Track three on this CD is called 'Reykjavik 101', which is a sort of name check of one of my favourite films ever.

Cooler Green @ Rocket

From a band that have seemingly come from nowhere to be headlining the rocket, this was a glorious performance.

Un-Cut: Midnight

Manchester DJ team Future Cut (Iyiola Babalola and Darren Lewis) and singer Jenna G. make up the Un-cut big sales pursuit squad.

Neville Staple: The Rude Boy Returns

Admittedly, when I told leedsmusicscene I liked ska, I meant ska-punk (aka Capdown-esque, aka more hardcore on the punk, subtle on the ska).

The Swenson @ Joseph's Well

It's Friday night and I think I might go out, have a few beers, and watch some bands I've never heard of.

Worriedaboutsatan @ Atrium

Poor Pifco. Unfortunately for them, the organisers of tonight's event, Tiny Cat, haven't realised that for those living outside of the city centre the cutoff point is basically about 11pm.

Kid iD: The Love Is Demo

As the daffodils open and the snow seems to have calmed down a bit, Kid iD's 'The Love is Demo' arrives and sets up the summer to come.

The Strokes: First Impressions Of Earth

Everyone knows how the rules of rock and roll go, especially those concerning albums and what happens when the first one you release becomes an instant classic.

Minus: Halldor Laxness

Minus are currently one of Iceland's biggest bands and are tipped to soon become their biggest export, and after a stunning performance on the main stage at Leeds and Reading this year, things seem to be going in the right direction.

The KBC: Trippin

Achingly current, crossing Bloc Party with The Music and The Rapture it's like an NME journalists wet dream.

Band Profile: A Love Supreme

Love ; noun. A deep, tender, ineffable feeling of affection and solicitude toward a person, such as that arising from kinship, recognition of attractive qualities, or a sense of underlying oneness.

Stagger @ LMUSU

Bright Young Things - a new showcase of talent - has hit venues across Leeds this past week and I caught up with the Leeds Met.

Michael Rossiter: La Charge

Solo or with the Folk Theatre Partisans, Michael Rossiter does good work round the Leeds acoustic scene and beyond.

Zero 7: Throw It All Away

Zero 7 are a funny one. I absolutely loved their first album 'Simple Things' and could often be found lounging out in my garden on a hot summer's day listening to their chilled out electro beats.

Band Profile: Blood Sundae

All girl dark melodic/doom metal

The Cribs to release "You Were Always The One" in February...

The Cribs head out on tour in January/February with fellow local bands The Blueskins and 10,000 Things.

Black Wire receive NME "Single of the Week" for their debut single...

Black Wire were awarded this week's "NME Single of the Week" for their debut single Attack! Attack! Attack!, writing amongst other things; "Great band name, great song title, great tune.

The Zico Chain: s/t

After spending some time listening to this new mini album from Brighton's angry grungers, The Zico Chain, I have learnt several things.  My grunge threshold is considerably lower than I previously thought.  Comparisons to legendary bands can be a thankless task.  Confidence in yourself can be a saviour.

Electric Soft Parade @ Leeds Festival 2002

For some reason, the ESP have got it in for Leeds. Even though they went down really well last year in this tent a few years earlier on in the day, the brothers White bear a grudge.

The Lost 45s UK: Legends EP

This noble self-produced effort from The Lost 45s comprises three 60's-inspired pop offerings. It's a confused sound that irks of a band still developing their craft.

The Blueskins @ Cockpit

Come with me on a little journey in time all the way back to late 2001 when this reviewer was reluctantly in Heaven and Hell with some pissed-up pals.

Andy Bodean and the Bottom Boys: Autumn Lee

One of the most dubious band names for some time coming at you all the way from the USA. This is standard 12 bar blues sung with distorted Strokes wannabe vocals.

The Offspring @ Leeds Festival 2002

The elder statesmen of tuneful pop rawk showed the kids how to do it all over again as the sun set over Temple Newsuam on the first day.

The Ripps: Holiday

The Ripps sound like Supergrass but are so much more annoying and much less inventive. They sound like they'd be friends with The Kooks and all the other user-friendly J17-reader bullshit that's going on at the moment.

four day Hombre @ Fibbers (York)

Fibbers of York is a great venue that has started to attract some great bands. Tonight was no exception.

Reverend And The Makers @ Cockpit

There's an air of anticipation amongst the crowd; The Cockpit is sold out and as this is the closest venue to Sheffield of their July tour dates plenty of people have made the trip up the motorway from Sheffield.

Japanaro @ Royal Park Cellars

So here we are then, for another instalment in the Bright Young Things series, put together by Steve Kind.

Martin Hughes @ New Roscoe

On many occasions throughout history a tiny crowd has witnessed a great miracle. Throughout musical history small numbers have seen something magnificent, which has transpired for the artist to go beyond these initial setbacks to playing huge venues and sell millions of albums.

Independent music festival hits Leeds this summer...

Over the weekend of August 19th, 20th and 21st the Moor Music Festival is set to take place on Ilkley Moor, Leeds.

Turning Green: Everybody's just a little bit...

A Brighton 4 piece, introducing themselves via this download only debut, coming over loud if not particularly clear.

Interview: Charly Six

Proper Charlies: Andy Roberts catches up with Charly Six prior to their Royal Park gig...

John Mayer: Bigger Than My Body

This guy is hot right now and Sony are giving him plenty of backing. Maybe he's not your cup of tea but you're going to have to admit the boy as talent.

Galitza: Laugh Like A Horse EP

There's extra special value for punters with this new and completely delectable horse-themed (note abstract gee-gee cover-art) EP from the Wrath records stable.

Ocean Colour Scene: North Atlantic Drift

Accompanying this latest album by the band it seems the nation loves to hate is a press release ranting about that fact but stating that OCS have defiantly continued to produce great music and be a great band.

Michelle Branch: Are you happy now?

Back with a new album, "Hotel Paper", this is the first single to be taken from it. With a sterling backing band including Kenny Aronoff, Dave Navarro and Jamie Muhoberac it's a tight, punchy slice of pop rock.

Vex Red @ Leeds Festival 2001

One day, five young chappies from Aldershot who had got fed up of getting nowhere with their band sent a demo tape to Ross Robinson (he of knob-twiddling duties for ATD-I, Slipknot and Korn amongst others).

Dirty Vinyls: Untitled

"Come on, come on you're singing this song". Am I? No I'm not. And nor shall I be listening to it again.

Ash @ The Refectory

The final night of Ash's tour falls in Leeds due to the gig being postponed from a couple of weeks ago.

Suki: 30:00

30 minutes of careful mood setting music. It's rhythmically well under control, it's well played and thoughtfully arranged.

Viva Stereo: Resistance EP

Opening track Chaos Adores Me is a slow burning 'Mondays' style tune with some random, and lyrically weak, ramblings over the top.

Interview: Elliot Minor

Daniel Powell talks to York's Elliot Minor as they begin their tour at Leeds' Cockpit venue.

Love with Arthur Lee @ Irish Centre

As I'm sat waiting for things to kick off, having a pre-gig pint, I reflect on the fact that Arthur Lee has been involved with Love for as long as I have been involved in breathing oxygen on my own.

Larrikin Love: Happy As Annie / On Sussex Downs

Somehow, somewhere, you can just imagine Pete Doherty in his little hat bobbing along to Larrikin Love.

Band Profile: Dorien Starre

Dorien Starre is not a fictional character... it so happens that facets of his bohemian life force are brought to life by his namesake guitar band.

Mr Shiraz @ Cockpit

It's clear just how far Mr Shiraz have come in such a short space of time, and things just keep getting better.

The Budda Cakes: s/t

Sometimes you can just tell a band's going to be good from their name. These guys call themselves The Budda Cakes so obviously they're gonna be brilliant.

Colin Mounsey: The Hungry Pig EP

This vintage quality EP has five full-bodied songs from Colin Mounsey (aka The Hungry Pig). Colin is a recent solo arrival in Leeds as a fully-formed songwriter and performer with a lavish sense of musical adventure, having served time with Blue Planet and Anabasis.

Indicator @ Railway Pub (Rodley)

This was always going to be a special gig for Indicator because not only is it their first ever headline show, its also the first gig since the release of the "Critical Resistance EP" and as a group of slightly pissed up punks gather in the pool room turned rock club of "the Railway" it's impossible to ignore the great sense of expectation in the air.

four day Hombre @ Faversham

Tonight was going to be another boring Monday night in as usual. I had planned to go the Faversham to see Four Day Hombre but as I hadn't got a clue where it was, and each of the maps I tried looking at all have different things on them, so I had resigned myself to not going.

Deadstring Brothers @ New Roscoe

Decisions, decisions! In town tonight there's Joseph Arthur at The Cockpit, Brendan Benson at the Uni and then his friends from Detroit, Deadstring Brothers at the New Roscoe.

Interview: Landspeed Loungers

With the 'forgotton' album scheduled for release soon, its about time that this interview found its way into press...

Lightyear @ Leeds Festival 2002

Lightyear are a band I've heard many good things about, though I hadn't bothered to go check them out until today.

Buen Chico selected for BBC Raw Talent live show...

Along with a number of other bands in Yorkshire & Humberside, Buen Chico were asked to do a live set on the BBC Raw Talent show ...

Butterfinger @ Joseph's Well

After debuting on a handful of live shows the band have a healthy C.V of support slots with Silver Ginger 5, The Jellys and playing with Terrorvision at their last ever gig (which incidentally was their first) Butterfinger are absolutely amazing.

Band Profile: The Weekends

www.myspace.com/theweekendsuk

The Marble Index: I Believe

If Jet didn't exist then "I Believe" would be an all-you-can-eat buffet of rock but instead it's hard not to imagine those talentless wankers churning out their Vodafone song.

British Beef: Without Me

Only a band that plays this level of bland emo punk would think it was cool to be described in their biog as "Blink 182 with Slash on guitar".

Interview: Jon Gomm

John Harvey catches up with Leeds' guitar virtuoso Jon Gomm...

The Somatics @ Joseph's Well

The Somatics, or so it seems to me, are possibly one of the least talked about most talked about bands in Leeds.

Worm: Integral Virus

Bradford has come under fire in the past for some of its local bands sounding dated, lacking ambition and creative inspiration.

The Blackout @ Cockpit

The queue out here is massive. Why this show is going on in the smaller room of the Cockpit tonight is anyone's guess, but by the looks of things outside, they didn't quite think this through.

Ill Ease: All Systems a-Go-Go

Long long ago-go, Leo Sayer confirmed his worth with 'One Man Band' knowing he didn't refer to anything really extraordinary, so there'll be no fuss in this review about Ill Ease's music being the work of a single performer.

The Voltaires @ Cockpit

Regardless of how bad a day it might have been for everyone here this evening, for those who managed to catch i concur's set, things certainly improved - brilliant performances like this transcend most contexts.

The Longshots: What Doesn't Kill Us

Recent experiments under test conditions have concluded that listening to this album whilst driving increases your chances of picking up a speeding ticket by a WHOPPING 37%.

Coasta @ Rocket

What a welcome surprise. At the end of the first act tonight, a band who are billed just as "Special guests", comes the announcement that they will be playing The Strychnine Lounge on Friday.

Bird: Slowly, Slowly

The latest single from Bird's album, The Insides, is called Slowly Slowly. And what a single it is. Reading the record company blurb that accompanied this CD, I expected big things and I was not disappointed.

Air Traffic: Shooting Star

The heroes of Live At Leeds have their new single, a song which on first inspection lacks the vivacity that drenched their performance at The Cockpit last month.

Seven Hours: Seven Hours EP

"Nowhere to Hide" is a clanging bluesified rock piledriver with Americano vocal affectation in the style of Pub Rock, but no particular song.

Pure Reason Revolution @ Cockpit

Due to Vib Gyor pulling out, it was a good two hours before Benjamin Wetherill took to the stage to play his trademark set of Formby covers, banjo strumming and all those minor keys.

The Lights: Grand Union

For the most part this West London outfit offer a mix of guitars, sultry vocals and synthesiser that makes for uptempo, fairly harmless but fun listening.

TMF: s/t

When you're young, some things don't seem to matter. Mortgages, pensions, buying a car, etc. seem to be a million miles away when you're in your teens.

Little Barrie: Pin That Badge

Fresh on the news that they have secured an impressive support slot on the upcoming Primal Scream tour, Little Barrie release 'Pin That Badge EP' as a taster for their forthcoming album in the new year.

Band Profile: Test Switch Isolator

Test Switch Isolator, described as 'eclectic', being labeled by many as many things such as Mathcore, Noisecore, Jazzcore?

Eaten By Tigers: Entropy

One of the best things about being an instrumental post-rock band has to be choosing what to call your songs.

Dillinger Escape Plan @ Leeds Festival 2002

Dillinger Escape Plan got things off to a storming start on the Main Stage at Leeds. Coming at you with mighty 3-minute power bursts of songs the kids down the front loved it.

Bon Jovi: Have A Nice Day

"100,000,000 Bon Jovi fans can't be wrong" declared the New Jerseyites' career spanning box set. Whilst there is no doubting that Bon Jovi have consistently 'shipped units' for over 20 years and won just about every music award going (along with Jon Bon Jovi's Oscar nomination for his solo work) there's a serious divide over the band's credibilty.

Tigs: Something New

This girl has balls. Big hairy ones. Now I'm not usually a fan of lady-friends with add-ons but in Tigs' case I very much approve.

Confuzion: Extinguished

Here's a clue as to how this review will unfold... Confuzion spell their name Confusion but with a "Z"...

Gobi Wolves: Untitled

With a planned debut release in the spring, Leeds experimental/improvisation outfit Gobi Wolves have given us a taste of things to come with an untitled 5-track demo that was recorded in the summer of 2006.

The Blueskins complete work on debut EP and release a new single in February...

The Blueskins start the New Year with a new single and an extensive UK tour. The band, who closed 2003 in fine style with a clutch of dates including an uproarious set at the Eat Your Own Ears Christmas Party in Islington, take to the road in the company of 10,000 Things, The Cribs and Fiery Furnaces through the course of January and February.

Unsigned Leeds band to play live on ITV "Late Attitude" show...

FineApple will appear on the ITV "Late Attitude" show presented by Richard Alexander as a follow up to their participation in Bright Young Things.

More bands for Moor Music Festival...

The Moor Music Festival (19-21st August, Ilkley Moor) have announced further additions to their line up.

The Belles: Omerta

The Belles are Christopher Tolle and Jake Cardwell from Kansas, a singer/guitarist and a drummer/percussionist.

Defenestration @ Leeds Festival 2001

Named after the act of chucking things out of windows and with an average age of 19, these Kerrang! faves certainly know how to scream a tent down.

Interview: The Pigeon Detectives

The Pigeon Detectives have been on a UK wide tour enjoying sold out shows and performing their new songs. Charlotte Oxnard caught up with the band at Leeds Metropolitan University for the home leg of their tour.

The Kennedy Soundtrack @ Leeds Festival 2002

The hard rock antidote to The White Stripes on the Main Stage, these Welsh rap-metallers roared with rage.

Novacain @ Joseph's Well

The first band were STONEFISH who I'd never seen before. The things that struck me were the singer's amazing natural voice and the guitarist's energy.

Easy Now All Stars @ Hard Rock Cafe

I hate to start anything on a negative point but... Flaming Lips! There. I got it out of my system. Not that it's a bad thing sounding like the 'lips, but it has to be a drawback when you realize that people could actually mistake your songs for unreleased 'lips tracks.

Napoleon IIIrd: EP1

"In life, I'm excited by things that I don't understand" goes the opening line to Napoleon IIIrd's debut, a 7" single on the fast-becoming-legendary-already Dance To The Radio label.

Beat Promotions looking for Leeds bands...

Beat Promotions, Leeds newest promotion company, are currently seeking bands for gigs in and around Leeds.

Band Profile: Rachel Cook

Rachel Cook, the Musical Adventure that is, is perhaps best described as 'not just another acoustic act'.

Wire Happy: Problems of Everyday Life

This CD is a strange one. Basically Wire Happy is a guy called Kevin who sits at his fourtrack machine making recordings of very short length and fitting lots onto an album.

The Bacchae @ Leeds Festival 2008

The Bacchae came onto the stage in costumes of various stripes. The band comprise Harriet Hyde doing vocals (a good line in slurred rock wastrel), Jockstrap Jim as the rock guitarist, Dave Vachon on bass and Rob The Fox playing the organ.

The Beat Maras: The Huaraz EP

With bands that form at Art College, you know that you're in for something avant-garde or at the least remotely inventive, right?

Jackie O @ Cockpit

It's improbable that a bloke from Salford is really called Jackson Starfield, but I'm prepared to accept it.

Tommy Evans: New Years Revolutions

Leeds is currently kicking up a hot fuss. The Kaiser Chiefs are supplying killer chorus driven pop, while for a gang (of Four) mentality look no further than 10,000 Things.

Interview: Duels

It's a busy month for Leeds quintet Duels. A slot at T In The Park, two singles and the release of the band's eagerly awaited debut album, "The Bright Lights & What I Should Have Learned". Sophie Barnes asks the questions...

Ian Wardle: Seven Hundred & Seventy Six Seconds

Ian Wardle has arguably done things the right way. Having served his time in various production line covers bands that may well have pushed him to breaking point, he has clearly learnt some valuable lessons in the art of song writing.

Spiritualized @ Leeds Festival 2002

Spiritualized round things off in the Evening Session Tent in a particularly sombre mood. Playing to an already small crowd it transpires that this set is for die-hard fans only.

NOFX @ Leeds Festival 2002

Insider information is great, but useless if it doesn't get shared whilst on the other hand there's some things that are better left unsaid.

Leeds musician to release a charity download single ...

Leeds dance / electronic musician Superboss is releasing "Things Will Get Better", a song featuring the voice of DJ legend John Peel on www.viralmusic.co.uk, with donations going to John's favourite charities, The Salvation Army and Amnesty International.

Bloc Party: Little Thoughts

From the opening of this song the bass drum hits every beat, the four on the floor providing the engine for the song.

Kaya: Poorly Produced Demo

"It'll be really funny and everyone will forgive our recording foibles if we call our demo 'Poorly Produced Demo' upfront - hey it's irony man!" Umm, well it isn't funny and it should really have been called 'Poorly Mastered Demo' lacking as it does in EQ or volume.

The Wombats: Moving To New York

The Wombats have formulated a pop song good enough to get the most shoe-gazing, miserable indie kids dancing in the disco.

Interview: Help She Can't Swim

Charlotte Oxnard heads over to Bradford's Love Apple to talk to Help She Can't Swim

Band Profile: Happy As Larry

Hello, my name is Larry Chambers and my band is called Happy As Larry. My mates are called Karl, he plays the bongos, and Wayne, he plays the piano.

Reuben: A Kick in the Mouth

Last years phenomenally titled "Racecar is Racecar Backwards" saw Farnborough three-piece Reuben show a strong knack for indulging in some rather melodious pop-rock shenanigans.

The Room: Untitled

Hailing from the midlands (there's a way to start a review with a sense of foreboding) The Room tie down three decent Indie rock offerings.

four day Hombre: 1000 Bulbs

With an album in waiting this seems like the big push Leeds giants four day Hombre have been setting themselves up for going back nearly 2 years.

Band Profile: Misterook

23-year-old songwriter Misterook has been around a fair bit as far as music is concerened. Since the age of 13, he has played guitar and wrote with countless bands from funk, soul, rock/metal, solo folk artistes, right through to experimental live drum and bass projects.

A Day Left: The pseudo post neo modern avante bassment garden rock EP

Two spelling mistakes in a pisstake title that takes no piss is not a good start. A sound check drum intro to a trying-hard-to-impress first track takes things down another notch.

Sparta @ Leeds Festival 2002

Sparta don't mind wasting a few minutes to get things really right before unleashing themselves on us.

Anti-depressants: s/t

Some time ago, March to be exact, I happened upon a band at Joseph's Well. That band was the Anti-depressants, and after being treated to the promise and potential of an all too short set, I have tried to keep an eye out for them.

Lapdog @ Woodkirk Valley Country Club

The summer madness continues with a spanking good night of local music at The Strychnine Lounge last Friday - four bands, yup four bands - one stage and a room full of people demonstrating that the upward trend of the venue is continuing.

The Clerks: The Dissidents

Hailing from Paris and Bramhall (near Stockport!), The Clerks are art-pop-rock glory kids, who will surely sew the seeds with this 9 track demo for much bigger things to come.

Mellow Gold: I've Got a Bowler Hat and a Walking Stick

They may have a bowler hat and a walking stick but unfortunately someone also gave them instruments, naivety and penchant for private school sixth form poetry about such ranging everyday subjects as hard drugs and rendezvous' by fast food stands.

The Rhythm Suite to take a break...

With two weeks remaining on their current schedule, Anonymous Groove has decided to postpone its weekly live music club night The Rhythm Suite until September in order to focus on two other events.

The Television Personalities: My Dark Places

Well at least we know there's no chance of The Television Personalities' mainman Dan Treacy getting prosecuted under the Trade Descriptions Act for this album.

Sawthroat @ Cross Keys (Morley)

I've seen these guys many a time and this is was definitely Sawthroat at their very best. Probably the best that I have seen them play since their gig at The Cavern in August.

And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead @ LMUSU

Now almost two years since its release, though not dated a single day, "Mistakes & Regrets" is greeted with the loudest roar of the night before even a word is sung as the unmistakable slow melody line builds up into a blast of intense raw energy, a Stateside version of The Cooper Temple Clause's "Panzer Attack" for want of a comparison.

Interview: The Raveonettes

Cathy Simpson talks with Sharin Foo of The Raveonettes ...

A @ Cockpit

Mangled and angry, the new-look version of Instruction were just as raucous as ever tonight, but seemed to have lost a tiny bit of their sparkle since being rearranged.

Hatebreed: Perseverance

Right, first things first, I hold my hands up and openly admit that I have no love for the style of music touted by Hatebreed.

The Darkness @ LMUSU

The Darkness - while people are still quite rightly questioning the reason why British troops were involved in an unnecessary conflict in the Middle East and how much further Tony Blair can suck up to the mad, imperialist, "must have all the oil" demagoguery of Bush Jr, thankfully some light relief in the form of pantomime metal is at hand.

MonMon: Repetition With Variation

Could MonMon be one of those bands for whom things unfold slowly? Having listened a few times, it's a puzzle why the worth of Repetition With Variation didn't hit me straight away.

The Cut: s/t

If there is such a thing as Funk-lite then surely Huddersfield 3-piece The Cut would be at the top of the list.

The Rain Band: s/t

Mancunians? ...surely not, you mean The Rain Band are from Manchester... I'd never have guessed, or should I say "Ayyeeeed nevuur av guezzed man!" Oh yes - review for the short on attention: do you like Joy Division, The Stone Roses, New Order, Flowered up, Mansun, Space Monkeys and most things on Factory Records?

Dr Strangemoose: Lay of the Cutlery Shiva

Surely a better name for this 7 song mini-album would have been "...I presume" and you should always be wary of bands that use made up "Funk" words like "Shiva" and include song titles that sound like an Aztec ruin - exhibit A: "Ja Sam Nakaza".

The Bluefoot Project: Brave

The Observations EP was good. The Bluefoot Project are awesomely professional. Chocolate Fireguard is a very cool label.

Cansei de Ser Sexy @ Cockpit

It's a tale of two girl bands and one power cut: Dead Disco trade in English sang-froid masquerading as kittenish cool, with a look typified by guitarist Lucy Catherwood thrashing artfully in skinny-fit Kiss t-shirt like some overheating android Sarah Harding clone in a Face photoshoot.

Engerica: Roadkill

It may be taking one hell of a long time but there are slight signs Engerica may actually be making a dent in British rock.

Maximo Park: I Want You to Stay

It has been a fairly inauspicious rise to glory for Maximo Park with their Gold selling debut "A Certain Trigger".

Rent @ Love Apple (Bradford)

Often, during times of contemplation (for which read: "hangovers") I wonder what the point of music actually is.

Nova: Nova IV

Experimentation seems to be what Nova are all about. The desire to fuse firmly together indie rock and electronica is part of their agenda.

Loudmouth Soup: Skydiver / Narcolepsy

Loudmouth Soup have long memories and some skill in their five-piece band. Here are two catchy pop songs of some quality.

Tarentum: s/t

What's it like? Well for starters, it's nice to hear something new to the ears, Tarentum are almost like, how can I put it...

Juana Molina @ City Varieties

At the time of discovering that this particular tour was to take place I was convinced that Leeds (and the majority of the other cities involved) wouldn't see a stronger line-up (festivals aside) all year long.

Interview: Fulc

Fulc talk to Andy Roberts about single, tours, Kerrang and strippers...

Drinkme: Manifesto EP

Displaying their influences like a BUMWARS tattoo in BIG BOLD letters on their forehead, this EP is a real call to arms for punk-funk fans everywhere.

The Somatics @ Joseph's Well

Pre-gig opinions on The Somatics suggested they are a classic example of 'an acquired taste', and with a small, but loyal following in Joseph's Well on Thursday night you couldn't help but think that The Somatics will forever retain their cult, underground status despite signing to a significant indie label in Beggars Banquet.

Band Profile: Immune

Making timeless music is difficult and important. You may not fully understand how or why bands make such music, maybe you don't even care.

Band Profile: Never So Few

Alternative dark psychedelic progessive space rock.

Cope: Sky City

Wakefield is the place for sure. Here's another talented bunch with a future ahead of them. It's not fully realised in the demo, with its tendency to try and sound like a "proper record".

Ali Whitton: Miracle

There's an influx of singer/songwriters at the moment, not just in Leeds but seemingly everywhere. The opening acoustic strum of 'Miracle' is soon followed by Whitton's voice, which contains a distinct quiver to it and gives him and edge from the off, he has an interesting voice and he sounds like Ali Whitton, not someone else.

Senses Fail: Calling All Cars

Firstly, I do not hate Senses Fail. I am a big fan of their early work, their first EP and its lead track 'Steven' are fantastic slices of hook-laden pop-core, heavy enough to raise an eyebrow among metal heads, and with lyrics to suit even the most sensitive of souls.

The Answering Machine: Oklahoma

By now we all know how it works: First you get the guitar, then you get the MySpace, then you get the women.

Interview: All My Friends Are Dead

Gavin Miller speaks with Leeds' newest post-rock prodigies All My Friends Are Dead

Percy @ Joseph's Well

What an honour, reviewing 2 of my favourite bands in the world, as well as the added bonus of Harold.

Kaiser Chiefs: I Predict A Riot

It's funny how there's not one mention of the name Parva in the 500 page biog that accompanies this sparkling new offering from Leeds own darlings-soon-to-be Kaiser Chiefs.

Mizkarrage of Justice @ Packhorse

Trash Heap Heroes A 3-piece band that looked that part and sounded it as well, heavily influenced by punk bands such as Blink 182 and Green Day they produced some well organised riffs and some very professional solos from the young guitarist.

The Moonies: I would give it all up for your Love

If you sped the Buzzcocks up then you would have The Moonies. In the recent media frenzy of garage rock bands that regularly appear at the whim of the NME and their evil media empire buddies, to often the focus seems away from our shores - be it Sweden, Australia or the US, we overlook our own proficiency to turn out some darn' right great bish bash bosh guitar songs.

Middleman: Good To Be Back

These guys truly are caught in the middle - between carefully de-glamourized Streets-style urbanism on the one hand, and tightly coiled guitar rock on the other.

O Fracas: Follow Sue

The step up from GCSE Maths to A-level is notoriously difficult. Where as once formulas made sense there are suddenly new terms and symbols which at first glance turn everything on its head.

Jarcrew @ Joseph's Well

Wrathstonbury is, believe it or not, one of the most important dates on Leeds' live music diary. Eighteen bands compete with beer for your attention.

Animal Collective @ Irish Centre

Light being faster than sound, the first thing that hit me as I descended from the (quite expensive!) bar was a blinding light, pulsating from the stage.

Band Profile: Ultraxine

Taz (Bass and vocals) Kate (Guitar and vocals) Rick (Drums) Originally started as a musical amalgamation writing cheesy pop-influenced rocky punk, Ultraxine are a group of individuals who strongly believe in doing things their own way...

Interview: Funeral for a Friend

John Harvey talks with Darren from Welsh emo hardcore band Funeral for a Friend, who recently headlined the NME tour in Leeds...

Band Profile: Livestock Meeting

Born through a love of all things cattle, a jam was a perfect accompaniment to a good glass of apple juice.

Interview: Pop Threat

The Leeds four piece explain why they've never felt a part of the Leeds scene, but still have the opportunity to make it big

Sukilove: Natural Regression

With three well-received albums to their name and a massive fan in the form of the legendary David Bowie it's surprising to find that this Antwerp based outfit remain relatively unknown.
