I was excited about this gig. I've enjoyed The Music's debut album and have been looking forward to tonight for sometime - tickets sold out about 4/5 weeks earlier so I was expecting an electric atmosphere inside this rather strange new venue under Leeds train station.

Fold your hands you walk like a rock star. The Dandy Warhols represent the triumph of substances over substance and their first two albums are testament to this with a handful of quirky, catchy and perfectly snotty pop gems along with dawdling tunes you might call "Atmospheric" or "Filler" if your in generous mood.

The Scaramanga Six: Are you one of the Family?

It is about 8.15 when the Worriedaboutsatan boys set up in front of the Brudenell stage. There is a small crowd of people gathered to watch Gav and Tom as they begin to create strange noises scattered with heavy cut up beats and slow swarming chords.
The Dirty Skirts: Feeling The Pressure
First impression of 'Feeling The Pressure' is that it tosses together bits of indie and electronica and expects them to sound coherent with minimal effort.
It's difficult to see where Pendulum get their rock-dance crossover act credentials from, but as an accessible drum and bass act, Pendulum are the best.

The Brudenell has played host to a number of extremely special shows in recent times, and tonight Vessels laid down a pretty good claim as to why this should go down as one of them. The homecoming gig of their UK tour, tonight showcased some of the very best in emerging talent from Leeds, culminating in one of the finest shows Radio One's favourite unsigned band have ever performed.
In a market that is becoming increasingly saturated with second-rate Michael Buble and Frank Sinatra imitators, it is refreshing to hear a troupe of young musicians making original, cutting-edge jazz music.

The Search Map: Tiny Victories EP
Hearing genuinely talented musicians for the first time is something that I experience very rarely. The Tiny Victories EP by The Search Map gave me one such experience.
Using a quote from one of the recent CD reviews, I was "suitably impressed" with last night's gig. It's Gone Ballistic yet again gave another three young bands the opportunity to impress in one of Leeds' finest live music venues - as Draco, Lunar Camels and The Gift were the people to rock'n'roll us through the evening.

According to the liner notes here in the CD wallet of Leeds City Council's 'Urban Fusion 2003' album it says, rather cringingly, that this is a CD "born from hip hop, r&b and urban flavaz" although what 'urban flavaz' is meant to mean I have no idea.
The first act on tonight's multi-cultural tour is the Icelandic beauty, Hera. Although not normally swayed by singer songwriters, finding them too introspective and mood dependant, Hera undoubtedly has a remarkable talent.
Kill Hannah: Until Theres Nothing Left Of Us
Kill Hannah's 'Until There's Nothing Left of Us' saw a US release in 2006. Now, two years later, it finally gets a UK release with a modified tracklisting that sees a number of the album's original songs dropped in favour of three tracks from Kill Hannah's as-yet-unreleased-in-the-UK debut, 'For Ever and Never.' The result is more a 'best of' than a coherent album, but you can hardly blame Kill Hannah for wanting to make the best possible impression on the UK audience.
Jeff Klein: Everybody Loves A Winner
After around Europe with One Little Indian label mate Jesse Malin, this is Jeff Klein's first UK release.

How influential were Alice in Chains? Maybe not as influential as their nineties grunge peers Nirvana, maybe not as highly touted as their glum superstar friends Soundgarden, but if you step back and look at the crop of bands that are now doing a piss poor impression of one of the heavier, yet more diverse Seattle bands from the grunge explosion, you'll realise how that most of these bands (Godsmack to name the most blatant copyists, even taking their name from a song from "Dirt") were losing themselves in the misery that was one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the 90's, 1992's "Dirt", rather than jumping around and trying to craft three chords into sub-Nirvana anthems.
So I'm wondering where my drunken comrades are and thinking if I'm going to get my coat back from the bag they have before I have to brave it back out into the winter night.

There's a strong sociable ambience at tonight's EP launch for i concur. The whole evening is endearingly informal - partly a product of the choice of venue, but most importantly of the obvious musical friendships between groups.

Ten years on from the release of 'August And Everything After' comes this 'Best Of' collection. Weighing in at 18 tracks long, plus a live bonus track, it covers the band's four studio albums as well as including an early demo, a new song and a cover.
Upon arriving at the pub, I purchased the usual pint of wife-beater and made my way down stairs. Sitting down in the rather empty basement room I was surprised that the first band was not already on.
The Blood Brothers are skinny, polite and nervous. When they perform however, a fairytale nightmare is cast upon the room, melancholy, bitter, estranged from reality and reeling with sarcastic vitriol.
