Starting off like something from Morrissey's Vauxhall and I, The Gist develops into a carousel of a song, underpinned by swirling keyboards, a sprightly bass sitting at the forefront of the mix, and lyrics that go round in circles.

Flies are Spies from Hell @ Royal Park Cellars
For this sleep deprived reporter, the prospect of having to walk deep into Headingley on a Thursday evening, with an exam at 9 O'clock the next morning, was not a particularly inviting one, but none the less I upped the courage and made the effort.
Leeds jazzes up the August Bank Holiday weekend for the first Big City Jazz festival
A dizzying line-up of acts has been announced for the first Big City Jazz festival in Leeds on August Bank Holiday weekend.
So I seem to be back at Royal Park Cellars again (seem to spending some time in here recently) Steve Kind warns me tonight is going to be loud - and it was!
Another night at the Well, they are going to have to give me my own chair at this rate... I have seen both Catylyst and Mariko before, but not Cube, although I have heard a lot about them.
High up in the 7th floor apartment of The Breech's keyboard player Davoc, overlooking the streets and at the weird and wonderful architecture of Leeds buildings it seems an appropriate place to talk about the state of the Leeds music scene, and more importantly the burgeoning and healthy looking future of The Breech.

Mr. Shiraz have everything you could possibly want in a band: a very well polished horn section, a mean looking drummer, hyper-singers (including an all singing all dancing version of Bez on acid) walking bass and funky guitar.

Catylyst are not having a good night. But it's not their fault; a series of cock ups with Chris' guitar and a bad sound due to the P.A man's efforts (or lack of) didn't do this outstanding band any justice.
Andy Roberts catches up with Catylyst prior to their Joseph's Well gig special...
Far be it from me to review my own band Star Bodixa - so I'll leave that to others. Suffice to say that their set was as brilliant and professional as ever, and up to the usual high standards I can expect of them.
four day Hombre: The First Word is the Hardest
Perfect pop. Just what daytime radio should be playing all the time. Three accomplished tracks on one CD with style, passion, ingenuity and wit.
Leeds' Stateless, after seemingly never ending games of label (hip)hop scotch, have finally released their long awaited self-titled full-length.
The opening of bars of this magnificent number has Muse written all over it. Its 'Ahh ahh ahh' introduction lays the foundations of another of Matt Bellamy's signature stadium tunes, albeit by a somewhat different route.
I was supposed to be going to Josephs Well tonight to see Brody, Sugarvalve and Catylyst. Unfortunately they cancelled, so I rang my friends and said, hey no problem I'm definitely coming to see you guys now, only to check the discussion board and see that it had been rearranged at Royal Park and was going ahead as planned aaaahhhhhh!!!

Another acoustic night at Joseph's Well and it's noticeable how popular these nights are becoming with around fifty or so sitting and standing in the candlelit venue.

Band Profile: Captain Backfire

Things look very bright for the music scene in Leeds at the moment, and tonight is a great testament to that.
We are six experienced musicians based around the Leeds, Bradford, and Harrogate area. We consist of Lead Vocals, Lead, Rhythm, Bass, Drums and Keyboard.
A clumsy first intro and a lightly thin vocal sound from Singer John Roberts gave me a first impression that Spitfire Charlie were just another emo-esque double garage band from Adel.

Kate Zezulka talks music, venues and days off work with Leeds' i concur in the run up to the single release...
A dreary Tuesday evening was enlivened on Tuesday by a performance of great soul and energy from recently formed soul outfit Wang Dang Doodle, named after a Willie Dixon song celebrating the joys of drunken and debauched revelry.
After a week of assaulting the laser on my overworked CD player and my wife's ears through demo offerings from both these bands, I knew, before even walking through the Vine door this was going to be a fantastic showcase.
d-koy have hair that has not been seen since Hundred Reasons first graced the stage all those years ago.
So this is it then, the final one of these gigs for a while, ending what has been a great season of gigs at the Well for the Blue Star chaps.
What is there not to like about this trio of lads from Donny? Signed to the infamous Dance To The Radio label here is the first release by the band on 7" vinyl, an old school fashion which is coming back and making every trendy indie kid go out and get a gramophone.
I have to say I was pleased that this event was taking place, my 82-year-old gran had a full right mastectomy to fight breast cancer only 3 years ago, and I have lost an Aunt to cancer.
Football and music. Everyone knows the horror stories. The Anfield rap for instance, Del Amitri singing for Scotland, or even that atrocious butchering of 'Come On Eileen' that plagued every radio station and TV channel during Euro 2004.
The Scaramanga Six @ Joseph's Well
Well blimey! I walk into Joseph's Well at about 3:20pm after standing in the pissing rain for 20 minutes outside the place (yes, you said you were opening at three!) but at least it gave me chance to sober up slightly seeing as I had been in Carpe Diem for the three previous hours and was somewhat jolly already.
If on a Saturday afternoon you're in Leeds, and near the Corn Exchange, there's a chance you'll be one of two things.
Wakefield's The Old House are no ordinary band. Chris Billingham, Craig Newman Matt Knee and Paul Reid are fresh, enthusiastic and fizzing with ideas.
York, eh? Lovely place, full of historical importance and quaint old streets full of olde shoppes. As for music though, it's probably not the first place you'd look for talent.
Kerouac: I Hope Everything's Alright In Your World
Andy Aitchison and Dan Little are in ambitious territory with this CD. There are the basic shapes of three good songs.
Violet, Indigo, Blue: Green, Yellow, Orange, Red. The colours of a rainbow when you stand on your head.
Band Profile: Unexploded Shells
Awkward indie noise-pop
Stateless are: Jimi Sturdy, drums & piano, Chris James, vocals & guitar, and Jon Taylor, ex-Duran Duran, on bass & vocals.
I know it's highly unprofessional of a reviewer to get on stage with a band, and even worse to dance about like an arse and then throw himself offstage into the crowd, but I just couldn't help it.
Various Artists: United Sounds of the HiFi Club
This brilliant compilation showcases a whole music scene that a lot of the other parts hardly touch. American style funk, soul and R&B is not exactly leading edge these days.
Remember those bands you had when you were in school? The one I was in, unfortunately, split up after a while, but I'm convinced we'd sound like this if we had kept it together.
A year ago The Noise were sounding like a young and excitable pub rock band with a bit of a cheek. A new year, and a new release and they still have the same plunderous love of 70's bluesy rock and roll and much the same basic sound.
Band Profile: Redwood Thinkers
"Dealing in personal, personable and down-to-earth everyman's storytelling, Redwood Thinkers daub a wash of homely yellow ochre over everything and invite you to consider everyday realities with an accepting eye " LEEDS MUSIC SCENE "Known for their melodic, acoustic folk rock with great vocal harmonies and truly original song writing, the Redwood Thinkers energetic yet calm performances are well worth catching live." SANDMAN MAGAZINE "Highly memorable, hook laden acoustic based music with confidence, nice people, great music, sublime harmonies.
Spear of Destiny @ Joseph's Well
About 10 minutes before Catylyst were due on stage, I was asked by a certain gentleman if I'd review tonight's proceedings.
Wheat: Everyday I Said a Prayer for Kathy and Made a One Inch Square
A rather morbid album title and a rather uninspiring band name wouldn't make this album stand out to most people.
So, Royal Park Cellars has had a refurb, complete with new stage and drum riser (excellent, now I can see all the hard work normally hidden by the singers).
So this is emo? Well not entirely, but there were enough tight black jeans and lip rings on display down at Joseph's Well to have fooled even the most enlightened hardcore critic.
I arrived at the Mixing Tin just as Bracken were starting their set. Coming down the stairs I could already feel the Anticon associated bass thrumming up to meet me.
It's nights like this that show what's great about the Leeds music scene. As I'm walking to the Well it pisses it down.
4mornings is an ambitious project. Each of four songs is led in by a sound montage of one of the band member's morning.
Virginia Creep @ Joseph's Well
A night filled with highs and lows took place at Joseph's Well as three exceptional bands showcased their talents and one band were a disappointment to most concerned.
Al Donlon - Keyboards, Vocals Craig Hale - Vocals, Guitar Nick Hawes - Guitars Christopher Lambert - Drums Mark Wilson - Bass, Vocals Craig Hale carries round a tiny silver 'piskie' with him wherever he goes.
If Live & Uncut aren't an advertising sham, then they're a shambles - but let's talk more about the music.
i concur @ Brudenell Social Club
Perhaps it's the excessive rock posturing and lunging, but tonight Dinosaur Pile-up seem more of a rock behemoth than ever.
After the most stressful and unnerving day ever I was in need of some music, so off I race to RPC just in time to catch the catch the start of the All Star 69ers.

The Paddingtons @ Joseph's Well
Matt Knee is the smiliest drummer I have ever had the pleasure to watch! It made my night to see someone up there who was clearly enjoying every moment and who was not too ashamed to show his excitement.
The A.M. @ Fez Club (Sheffield)
If you have never been to, or played the Fez Club, I would recommend that you go. Nice staff, a friendly atmosphere 'Moroccan' / middle east décor and silken sheets for the bands to hide behind and call their dressing room.
I enjoy acoustic music and being able to sit at tables is great (ok I admit it - I'm old... I like to sit down sometimes) I knew Danny Carr was playing, but wasn't sure what else was on.
"Let's rock 'til we drop" says My Awesome Compilation frontman Chris Driver to kick off tonight's proceedings, the 18th leg of this European Atticus tour, featuring the Leicester four piece as well as Americans Hopesfall and Tsunami Bomb...
Mr Shiraz @ Warehouse (Huddersfield)
Well if there was ever a rock 'n' roll town, it's gotta be Huddersfield. Why bloody Huddersfield? I asked Mr Shiraz and their pop impresario and all-round genial chap of a manager, and they all just said 'You'll see'.
The Tennessee Traincrash @ The Vine
The intimate carpet, curtains and ceiling lights of the Vine's upstairs room dispense a surreal good humour to all who have entered the packed-out space, up here on the edge of abnormality.
I've always thought band names are important. They can say a lot about the band itself, or its music: like New Order, Spiritualized or Fear Factory.
First up, playing to a half empty square, are The Motorettes. These Geordie guys aren't half bad really, even though they fit the mould of typical indie rockers.
The memories are hazy, the order of events may not be quite right but I know two things; beer flows freely in The Fav and amazingly it didn't rain, or at least certainly not enough to water down my Sol or to kill any of the musicians on stage.
MMMMBZZZZ goes the clock and I'm buzzing for pound a pint. I'm sat there, as per every pissing Friday afternoon, shooting the shit with Tommy B.
The first band to take to the stage tonight are the local three-piece punk-rock outfit Erin's Third Incident.
Another cracking line-up courtesy of the Blue Star boys, this time with a bit of a rockier edge leading to possibly the fullest showcase since Leeds Music Scene maestro Dave Sugden and Joseph's Well manager Karl Baird began the monthly nights back in December 2000.
Another Saturday, once again striving for that elusive intimate gig, the night that blows all the others out of the water, the Leeds hard rock fraternity, raise two fingers defiantly toward its heavily subscribed, yet vastly popular indie scene, and turn out in force to the one place they feel at home.
Joseph's Well in Leeds have played host to some rather well-known bands if their posters are anything to go by - and over the last few months it seems like they've booked mostly Biffy Clyro support bands (thisGirl, The Boxer Rebellion, X is Loaded and some little London outfit named Brigade...).
