Steve Sanderson: Time and Tide EP
"And now something for our older listeners....", a phrase that probably puts the fear of god into most of our readers, and a phrase that could quite easily precede Steve Sanderson's adult orientated northern folk blues.

Downdime: Seeds of Hopelessness
This is a spiky-jangly-punky-patchy-catchy-pop and I like it. A wail of distorted guitar crashes in and we're off at a frantic pace headlong into the new wave.
Leeds Music Scene asks This Et Al some burning - or at least mildly broiling - questions in the wake of some storming dates in the North and in anticipation of the release of the Figure Eight EP...

White Denim: All You Really Have To Do
Having been in a coma for the past 6 months, I've been lucky enough to miss the hype pushing White Denim to the front of the saviours of indie rock queue.
Formed in the autumn of 2006, The Black Bloc spent the following 10 months locked in their rehearsal room, endlessly jamming and creating brand new material.
Desert Monkey: Made Great By A Breeze
Starting off with the title track sounding like a rougher Kyuss with furious bluesy guitar riffage and fat drums, Desert Monkey are looking like quite the heads down, balls to the wall rock band.

Wraths Super Sevens part deux bristles into life with their very own Stuffy at the helm and Steve Albini no less at the mixing desk.

four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
I had a feeling tonight was going to be a good night and it was. Steve Kind introduced each of the bands and let us know what we were in for...
A Swedish hitchhiker near York asked if I played a musical instrument and when the answer was no he told me he was returning from Ireland.
Longwave @ Leeds Festival 2002
Another New York guitar band? On first cursory glance you may be tempted to throw Longwave on the towering pile with all the rest, but stop a moment, stay and listen (as many did) and you may change your mind.
Bradford's Water pleasingly don't fit the usual sweaty longhaired contingent of the city. This album is proficiently played by 3 talented musicians, produced by former Cure levels changer Steve Whitfield, has as much professionalism about it as you would hope, and 11 (that's eleven) songs that borrow a number of classic ideas...
Shed a tear Leeds, wear a black arm-band and mourn. Galitza, Wrath Records secret weapon are soon to be no more.
Spitfire Charlie: Childish Thoughts
These days, releasing CDs more regularly than a wet day in Yorkshire, Spitfire Charlie are no doubt looking to build on their recent 3 minutes of fame found in the hands of Steve Pac-a-mac.
"Spiteful, cynical, rock noir"
Seismic Loveshift @ Royal Park Cellars
After a day slogging round York, I thought some music was in order to round the night off. Having promised Seismic Loveshift I would try to see their full set this time (failed as usual - sorry!
Ahhh, you can't beat a bit of a shuffle in the late afternoon, and this month Mr. Rob Paul Chapman's showcase again failed to disappoint.
Funk, why oh why do you keep tracking me down and ask me to review you? I have to start this review by saying that I really don't like funk music.
Band Profile: It Takes Bridges
It's a riot based around riffs, drama, sweat and volume. Think The Fall fighting Nirvana for the last of the drugs.
Hatch @ Woodkirk Valley Country Club
A Friday night running up to the New Year and a last minute decision, and a very kind offer of a lift from Steve Kind, sees me travelling out to Woodkirk Country Club, former home to Strychnine Lounge gigs.
Leodis, Indie band, located in Hunslet, Leeds, original music
These 4 lads hail from Huddersfield, and are fairly embryonic as they formed in 2006. The time spent since has been put to productive use under the watchful eye of producer Steve Whitfield, resulting in this 3 track offering.
Well, another night of Bright Young Things bands down at Uncle Steve Kind's joint and tonight it is The Gordon Bennetts, Mutiny and Harold.
Interesting and distinctive: these terms are sure to be among comments heard where Sarah Lawton plays.
On an evening as hot as this, being stuck in a bustling gig is not a hugely appealing prospect. Passing out from over-heating - which, as soon as you walk in to the Cockpit, does seem likely or even perhaps inevitable - really doesn't strike me as much fun either, but this gig is certainly one worth suffering for.
pop indie
So summer is now over and it's time for Steve Kind and his Panama Promotions team to get back into the fray, but this time three times a week.
Review featured with permission from www.charmonline.co.uk It has come to my attention that recent reviews in Charm have been of Emerson, Lake and Palmer proportions.
Blah Blah Tin: The Interesting Inept Music Thing
Home produced and bearing all the hall marks of it Blah Blah Tin are not here to trouble the charts, but instead to do exactly as they please with a drum machine, synth, dirty guitar and big collection of records by The Fall.
A year ago The Noise were sounding like a young and excitable pub rock band with a bit of a cheek. A new year, and a new release and they still have the same plunderous love of 70's bluesy rock and roll and much the same basic sound.
Duncan McFarlane Band: Woodshed Boys
After having had the pleasure of catching this band live several times I had very high expectations of this album.

Being confronted by a venue the size of a half-empty aircraft hangar doesn't daunt York's heroic threesome.

So I seem to be back at Royal Park Cellars again (seem to spending some time in here recently) Steve Kind warns me tonight is going to be loud - and it was!

A third sold-out Leeds date for the UK's latest finding, The Music, and this time it doesn't take a guest DJ appearance to bring in the crowds.
Considering the headliner I'd expected to see more of a gathering than became evidently 'it' towards the end of the evening.
Forgive me for my ignorance but I thought nobody actually gave a rat's arse about indie guitar bands any more...
Following their huge single Just For Tonight, their top 10 debut album Started A Fire, a sold out tour from January to March, North Yorkshire five-piece, One Night Only have announced a new headline tour for May.

Dinosaur Pile-up @ Leeds Festival 2008
Matt Bigland, guitar and vocals, Tom Dornford-May, bass guitar, and Steve Wilson drums are the relatively new Dinosaur Pile-up.
Thanks to the note at the bottom of the flyers I managed to get the bus up there this time (56/57), it's a long walk from town otherwise, but well worth it!
Amorius aim these songs directly at radio play standards - and smack them dead centre. The two tracks (taken from the commercially available four track EP "Transparency") are very smooth, carefully made and well balanced.
Galitza: Laugh Like A Horse EP
There's extra special value for punters with this new and completely delectable horse-themed (note abstract gee-gee cover-art) EP from the Wrath records stable.
"Five men, a large number of instruments" proclaims the press release accompanying Xi's latest magnum opus, the three track EP "Low".
"All the best female-fronted pop songs ever ('Atomic', 'Kids In America', anything involving Gwen Stefani), mashed up and sung out by an indie Alison Goldfrapp in a stripy prom dress. Better believe it, buddy" NME
Mama Scuba @ Royal Park Cellars
Tonight is advertised as a "Leeds 6 Alternative Music Extravaganza" and by heck did promoters Panama get it right, for tonight they have booked perhaps the best three alternative bands I have seen in a long time, all local bands, all doing the city of Leeds proud, and as Steve Kind (Panama) put it when he introduced the headliners Mama Scuba, "I've been wanting to book this band for two years now" - it was well worth the wait!
Juno 2 are a band I've heard a lot about but only seen play live once. They didn't particularly blow me away on that occasion, although I seem to remember thinking at the time that they had some good songs and could be great, if only they'd perform a little.
Arriving at about 7pm, there was already a lengthy queue outside the venue. We got into the "Over 18's" venue at about 7:30, and as everyone else was running down to the front, we decided to join them all.
Oceansize: One Day All This Could Be Yours
Chris Sheldon (Feeder and so on) has done a very tidy production job on a couple of new but shapeless and over extended Oceansize tunes, with a storming live recording of "Massive Bereavement" that pushes the playing time up to over 20 minutes.
I've only ever seen Nursery once, on that occasion they were opening up for Icelandic outfit Bellatrix over in Bradford, but from all accounts I remember it being quite a memorable set.
The Lonesome Organist: Forms and Follies
Thrill Jockey are good to us. In a bad week, the poetic grace and certifiable madness of the Lonesome Organist drops through the letter box with a muffled thud that bears no more relation to the CD case inside than any of the 14 tracks do to each other.
Mumm-Ra: These Things Move in Threes
I tend to be a little wary of bands like Mumm-Ra, who take up instruments with the sole purpose of being in a band to pass the time - something all the members of this group admit to.
Xi in gig moratorium pending new album material
Following their appearance this Wednesday alongside Capital State at The New Roscoe Leeds self-styled dark guitar rock exponents Xi have declared a moratorium on live shows to allow them to dedicate the next few months to writing a full B-list of songs for an album of all-new material to be released towards the end of next year.
I started my day in a very groggy fashion indeed. I had already come to terms with the fact that my football team (Tamworth FC) will be slogging it out somewhere outside of the football league next season, and that I was flat broke after paying long overdue bills...
Stiff Little Fingers @ Holmfirth Picturedrome
Stiff Little Fingers in Holmfirth? The sound of tinkling tea cups shattered by Belfast power chords? Mohicans mixing with the blue rinse brigade?
"Get out ya calculators, slide rooool-ah, No matter which way you fold or bend-ah, Turn, Oh you neva goanna top us you neva goanna beat us, CAN YOU DIG MA BAND?!" In his typical self congratulatory way that only Jon Spencer can carry off we are introduced to the new Blues Explosion album.
Stuffy and The Fuses: Join me or Die!
Stuffy and the Fuses crash in like a lump of hard coal through the window. There's a scary noise, some local damage, and a cold wind rushes in behind.
So here we are then, for another instalment in the Bright Young Things series, put together by Steve Kind.
The hyperactivity begins outside with some rather fresh-faced Humour fans chanting an assortment of aphorisms, which can be heard a good few streets away.
Duncan McFarlane Band @ New Roscoe
Hmm.... the New Roscoe you say? Isn't that where the tribute bands play? Well yes I suppose it is, but periodically they offer a night over to a group of performers who can really write songs and play them without pretending to be someone else.
The Observations EP was good. The Bluefoot Project are awesomely professional. Chocolate Fireguard is a very cool label.
Duncan McFarlane Band @ Korks (Otley)
What Otley has rightly become used to when the Duncan McFarlane Band plays the Folk Festival there, is a glowingly satisfied home crowd with a similar reaction from visitors who know the band's sound - and amidst all this, many new listeners simply astounded at the quality of Duncan and his musicians.
Def Leppard: Songs From The Sparkle Lounge
For over 25 years Def Leppard have been one of the UK's biggest rock bands, selling over 30 million records worldwide.
Neurosis: The eye of every storm
After developing a cult following in the USA in the last few years it's a suprise Neurosis have never been a big name on UK Shores.
I'd gone down to The Cardigan Arms to experience wonderful, shiny guitar pop. Stuff with hooks, choruses you can sing along to (if you wish), and that won't leave your head for days afterwards.
A good name, a good front cover, and a kudos-worthy work ethic, and oh boy it fits in my CD player like a penis in a vagina.
After hearing the amazing split 7" from these two Leeds bands I was positively salivating at the prospect of tonight's show.
The Scaramanga Six: The Dance of Death
If there was a TV cop show set in Medieval England featuring a glam rocker and a punk, transported back in time from the 70's, where their only way to get back home was to solve the unspeakable crimes of the time...

After an interesting wait at a bus stop (involving a chance meeting with a young lady who would later attempt to kiss me), I finally boarded a bus, which the driver said would be heading past the Royal Park.
This Et Al @ Music Box (Manchester)
Manchester, we have a problem. It would seem that people of the modern age have exceedingly low boredom thresholds.
The Scaramanga Six @ Joseph's Well
Review featured with permission from www.whisperinandhollerin.com Wrath Records are a new label in Leeds, based around 4 bands who have a lot in common.
I have to start by saying that this sort of music is not my usual cup of tea, so I was very dubious about going but finally got talked into it, as few mates of mine were going to be performing.
The Scaramanga Six: Strike! Up the Band
Strike! Up the Band is a monster. The 13 songs, the two videos and the SIX SIX SIX count-in absolutely guarantee one hell of a good mood.
So, Royal Park Cellars has had a refurb, complete with new stage and drum riser (excellent, now I can see all the hard work normally hidden by the singers).
i concur @ Brudenell Social Club
Perhaps it's the excessive rock posturing and lunging, but tonight Dinosaur Pile-up seem more of a rock behemoth than ever.
It's Friday night and I think I might go out, have a few beers, and watch some bands I've never heard of.
The Scaramanga Six @ Joseph's Well
Well blimey! I walk into Joseph's Well at about 3:20pm after standing in the pissing rain for 20 minutes outside the place (yes, you said you were opening at three!) but at least it gave me chance to sober up slightly seeing as I had been in Carpe Diem for the three previous hours and was somewhat jolly already.
Tom Hingley - Madchester Man - Musician - Hat sniffer and a legend! Victoria Holdsworth asks the questions.
It's Saturday night, the cellars are dark, and Steve Kind is bellowing for us to greet rock uber-beasts CATYLYST, and as they take the stage amidst the roar of two distorted guitars, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat with my fist poised for punching the air and I'm ready to rock.
Live music seems to be undergoing some kind of renaissance in Leeds at the moment, with several new venues popping up here and there.
Well this was my first time to the new live venue on the Leeds circuit that is The Kirkstall Lites, and boy was I impressed after the night was over!
The Royal Park Cellars has a rapidly growing reputation, and gets better every time you catch a band down here.
The first band to take to the stage tonight are the local three-piece punk-rock outfit Erin's Third Incident.
Tonight was a much-anticipated event. Visa had been away from the live scene for around 7 months, taking time to build a themselves a studio and record some fine tunes indeed.
Where Darren Poyzer appears, unusual things happen and people enjoy themselves. Over the weekend of 20-22 August, he even had to forego his own birthday gig back in his Glossop-Manchester-Oldham homeland because he'd been such a success at the 'Arts for Life' Edinburgh Festival that they wanted more.
I was supposed to be going to Josephs Well tonight to see Brody, Sugarvalve and Catylyst. Unfortunately they cancelled, so I rang my friends and said, hey no problem I'm definitely coming to see you guys now, only to check the discussion board and see that it had been rearranged at Royal Park and was going ahead as planned aaaahhhhhh!!!
Stephen Fretwell @ City Varieties
In a modern world where singersongwriters are hotter than ever, unfortunately the bland James Blunt and beautiful Daniel Powter rule the airwaves.
When jumping, dancing and causing general musical mischief in the darkened venues of Leeds city centre, the rare spotted Steve Lamacq is a rare beast to sight indeed.
What is a Juma? Well it depends on whom you ask... To some it's a dance riddled drug fuelled monster of funky rock and roll.
There's a new club open in town. It's pretty exclusive and the house band is Leeds' Yellow Stripe Nine. Conveniently, Club DeccaDance's owner is the band's lead singer. In fact, it's his creation.

four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
There's a vibe in the air tonight, a tangible, swelling excitement that seems to accompany the Hombre lads everywhere they travel.
For the uninitiated in things Nasty, Nasty Fest is the coolest, most fashionable festival in Leeds. This is the land of the true fashionista, where colossal hair for the boys; plunging neck lines for the girls and the most god damn cool clothing available to mankind are compulsory!
Northern Theremonic @ Royal Park Cellars
I came tonight for only the second time to the Royal Park pub and I was indeed a Panama Virgin. I had heard good things about Steve Kind and his nights and was eager to find out if they were true.
The memories are hazy, the order of events may not be quite right but I know two things; beer flows freely in The Fav and amazingly it didn't rain, or at least certainly not enough to water down my Sol or to kill any of the musicians on stage.
The Leeds four piece explain why they've never felt a part of the Leeds scene, but still have the opportunity to make it big
Biffy Clyro @ Leeds Festival 2007

Interview: The Casual Terraces
Andy Roberts catches up with The Casual Terraces before their gig with Radio Clash...
After such a packed night on Tuesday, it was a bump back down to Earth tonight with a much smaller crowd who'd come to see four very different bands, none of which I'd seen before, so I looked forward to each one.

Victoria Holdsworth talks to The Glitterati as they make a welcome return to their hometown.
Foo Fighters @ Leeds Festival 2005
Sunday started like any other day. Apart from this Sunday I happened to wake up in a field with 30 odd thousand other bear soaked, bleary eyed, unwashed, desperate bladder controlling festival revellers.
Iron Maiden @ Leeds Festival 2005
Dark sky in the morning, festival goers warning. Fucking brilliant ensemble of bands on the main stage tonight, festival goers delight.
