On an evening as hot as this, being stuck in a bustling gig is not a hugely appealing prospect. Passing out from over-heating - which, as soon as you walk in to the Cockpit, does seem likely or even perhaps inevitable - really doesn't strike me as much fun either, but this gig is certainly one worth suffering for.

Matt Bigland, guitar and vocals, Tom Dornford-May, bass guitar, and Steve Wilson drums are the relatively new Dinosaur Pile-up.
Thanks to the note at the bottom of the flyers I managed to get the bus up there this time (56/57), it's a long walk from town otherwise, but well worth it!
Amorius aim these songs directly at radio play standards - and smack them dead centre. The two tracks (taken from the commercially available four track EP "Transparency") are very smooth, carefully made and well balanced.

Tonight is advertised as a "Leeds 6 Alternative Music Extravaganza" and by heck did promoters Panama get it right, for tonight they have booked perhaps the best three alternative bands I have seen in a long time, all local bands, all doing the city of Leeds proud, and as Steve Kind (Panama) put it when he introduced the headliners Mama Scuba, "I've been wanting to book this band for two years now" - it was well worth the wait!
Juno 2 are a band I've heard a lot about but only seen play live once. They didn't particularly blow me away on that occasion, although I seem to remember thinking at the time that they had some good songs and could be great, if only they'd perform a little.
Arriving at about 7pm, there was already a lengthy queue outside the venue. We got into the "Over 18's" venue at about 7:30, and as everyone else was running down to the front, we decided to join them all.
Oceansize: One Day All This Could Be Yours
Chris Sheldon (Feeder and so on) has done a very tidy production job on a couple of new but shapeless and over extended Oceansize tunes, with a storming live recording of "Massive Bereavement" that pushes the playing time up to over 20 minutes.
I've only ever seen Nursery once, on that occasion they were opening up for Icelandic outfit Bellatrix over in Bradford, but from all accounts I remember it being quite a memorable set.

Thrill Jockey are good to us. In a bad week, the poetic grace and certifiable madness of the Lonesome Organist drops through the letter box with a muffled thud that bears no more relation to the CD case inside than any of the 14 tracks do to each other.

It's Saturday night, the cellars are dark, and Steve Kind is bellowing for us to greet rock uber-beasts CATYLYST, and as they take the stage amidst the roar of two distorted guitars, I'm sitting on the edge of my seat with my fist poised for punching the air and I'm ready to rock.
Live music seems to be undergoing some kind of renaissance in Leeds at the moment, with several new venues popping up here and there.
Well this was my first time to the new live venue on the Leeds circuit that is The Kirkstall Lites, and boy was I impressed after the night was over!

The memories are hazy, the order of events may not be quite right but I know two things; beer flows freely in The Fav and amazingly it didn't rain, or at least certainly not enough to water down my Sol or to kill any of the musicians on stage.
