Tonight's support are nearly as good as the headliners. The King Blues have got the mixture of ska, punk, and politic bashing down to a fine art, and pour so much raw energy into their performance it is hard for anyone present to stand still.
Fifth Goodbye were the first band of the evening's entertainment, and they had to put in a very solid performance to be able to stand up to the following bands, and a solid performance it was.
I eventually got down (taxis eh, only an hour late) to Joseph's Well in time to see Sposh. Rumour has it that before the Sposh set, I'd missed a most excellent opening act called Mahwa.
Rob Nichols is some rare creature darting across the normally beaten tracks with a flurry of noises and graceful swerves, to disappear in the woods and haunt your memory weeks later.
Mungo Hump sounded as proficient as they did interesting as they blasted through their first two songs but the set averaged out from that point onwards.
Tonight sees the coming together of a trio of Leeds bands, including newcomers Living Thing, recent winners of the Bright Young Things 2000 competition Insense, and headliners Dionysus, the relative veterans on the night.

Oh Jesus, Cast are back. No, honestly they are. Well a slightly tarnished, illegitimate son but you get the vague picture.
Handsome Family @ City Varieties
Never let it be said that Leeds Music Scene does not offer you variety, not so! For tonight I have sat slap bang in the middle of a whole different generation, yes, hilarious as it may sound I've just been the youngest person in a sea of Radio 2 listeners (don't get me wrong, I actually love Radio 2).

Recently, there's been a contrast of sorts when going out - some nights can be spent bumping into some of the most passionate promoters and talented musicians the city can offer; people who have a genuine enthusiasm for the music scene in Leeds.

How could any one miss this gig?!! No, I'm not talking about the fact that this gig is free. I'm not even saying how could anyone miss one of the best young acts in Leeds in Saving Lenny.
Although the Mediterranean can feel a very long way away from Leeds in June, live music can have a transforming effect on the mood or a place or people.
Candlelight set the scene at Joseph's Well for the new acoustic night. It is change from the usual mix of bands that are on the rest of the weeks.
The Printed Sound: The Announcement EP
These days the term "Indie-rock" is enough to strike fear into the heart of even the most hardened, weathered hack.
33 years ago, Hawkwind came onto the psychedelic scene, and have continued to push music outer and further away from the mainstream, while influencing space and post rock and to a large extent the techno end of the dance spectrum.
Dan International, Pete, Roj, Simo and T. Any ideas? Yes. You got it. They are The High Chairs. Well done.
Tony Bliar really has Britain under his spindly thumb. In the Red corner, weighing approximately 180 lbs, representing middle class Britain, we have James "The Boredom" Blunt.
A couple of weeks ago I went to a gig at Joseph's Well to see a friends band. The support band that night was Divided By Zero and they were great.
Last weekend saw the first Morley Battle of the Bands and proved to all that attended that this was not a one off event and that the future of the Morley Battle of the bands is secure.

David Gedge's long running friendship with the late great John Peel is lovingly documented across this 6 CD box-set.
Buzzkill seem to have been doing the rounds in and around Leeds for some time now; whenever their name crops up I instinctively associate them with other similar(ish) sounding bands of Leeds past such as Chopper and Joe90.
There's a world of male dreams, TV series and British films where the Ford Capri, wide lapels and the wah wah pedal combine to create power, speed and cool calculation.
Tom Hingley - Madchester Man - Musician - Hat sniffer and a legend! Victoria Holdsworth asks the questions.

I first came to hear of the Gary Stewart Band at the Futuresound heats in July of last year, when I was bowled over by their performance.
Capital State: Middle Of The Night
Capital State are making a lot of the running on the Leeds scene these days. High profile gigs, a growing following and this smart new 3 track CD commits them to the West Yorkshire Premiership, with a special award for pleasing the crowd.
The Palms really fit the modern day bill with their take on the current Indie rock / dance scene ala Kasabian, but one or too vocal production issues and an occasional penchant for misguided fret-wanking hold them back from hitting the full throttle.
Robochrist @ Brudenell Social Club
It's not at every gig where the between-band entertainment consists of various luminaries of the Leeds music scene, including members of The Scaramanga Six, les Flames!
One EP and one gig sums up Sky Larkin's musical contribution to planet Earth so far, yet for a band so young, there's a lot of promise locked away in the three piece as Gavin Miller explains...
Band Profile: Red Lorry Yellow Lorry

"Horses in the Sky" is the third and most expansive album to date from this collaboration of various artists from the Montreal post-rock scene.
You've probably already got records in your collection that sound like this one, the thing is, you probably stole those records from your dad.
The Meters, Conny Price, Jimmy Smith. So much brilliant instrumental Jazz Funk has passed through my ears that I find it hard to be impressed in recent times, but I was intrigued to see why a band that had only been around three years (with many line-up changes I may add) had been getting their performance at Edinburgh Fringe Festival hailed as: "highly energetic" and "powerful and absorbing." I arrived into Leeds Uni's Mine Bar to a quite unsettling atmosphere, with a tense omnipresence about the place.
Sunday nights at Joseph's Well are rapidly turning into something a bit special on the Leeds music scene.

Deemed by the illustrious Leeds City Council as "Bright Young Things" I was quite looking forward to hearing what the Leeds Music Scene of tomorrow had to offer by the way of the All-star 69ers.

Little Japanese Toy @ Life Bar

Love with Arthur Lee @ Irish Centre
As I'm sat waiting for things to kick off, having a pre-gig pint, I reflect on the fact that Arthur Lee has been involved with Love for as long as I have been involved in breathing oxygen on my own.
It's a cold wet Saturday night, we're stood outside the Mixing Tin so we can hear ourselves think, and I'm talking to Tom Summerfield and Glenn Pearson from Sound Club who have just finished an amazing set, in support of Tom Hingley.

Duncan McFarlane Band @ New Roscoe
Hmm.... the New Roscoe you say? Isn't that where the tribute bands play? Well yes I suppose it is, but periodically they offer a night over to a group of performers who can really write songs and play them without pretending to be someone else.
International Trust: Bruce Lee
The rapid rise of computers in the workplace has revolutionised the art of skiving. Whereas once slacking off was itself a complex process of fabricating meetings and leaving coats on the backs of chairs, now any imbecile (at least any imbecile not restricted by those pesky filtering systems) is only a click away from an online escape route from the drab and dreary reality of the modern office.
My first gig of 2003 and in the dreaded month of January, the skint month, the after payday month, the "gigs are low priority on my spending list" month - but no, what's this, "you'll have to squeeze in at the back"; "you can stand on the chairs if you want"; "I'm not going to the bar again, it was murder" for tonight The Primrose is packed for its first gig of the year and the first gig ever for The Cat Pack all 19+ of them.
Tonight the Highwood, yet again packed to capacity saw another three bands from Leeds' increasingly fertile music scene.
What is a Juma? Well it depends on whom you ask... To some it's a dance riddled drug fuelled monster of funky rock and roll.

Firstly an apology. I'm going to get a bit nostalgic in this review. Please bear with me. Back in the crazy days of the Leeds Music Scene (circa 2001) I saw a band play several awesome gigs at The Well.
The image of silent film star Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock face on the front cover feels significant - Lloyd is captured struggling with the hands of time.
Things look very bright for the music scene in Leeds at the moment, and tonight is a great testament to that.
The Pattern @ Leeds Festival 2002
Ahhh, The Pattern... one of the forerunners of the trashy, garage rock revival that has seen the music media continually cream their pants at the possibility of another band beginning with 'The'; the same scene that has spawned thousands and thousands of wannabe new bands, each one attracted by the fact that 'you don't actually have to play that well'.
I must admit that I am somewhat overjoyed to see that relative newcomer Jack Peñate has employed the recently revived tactic of selecting a local support act for each date of his tour.

Stateless @ Brudenell Social Club
It is about 8.15 when the Worriedaboutsatan boys set up in front of the Brudenell stage. There is a small crowd of people gathered to watch Gav and Tom as they begin to create strange noises scattered with heavy cut up beats and slow swarming chords.
The Diawara frontman looks in his element as he energetically takes it upon himself to cover every square inch of the stage before the night is up.

The first time I ever went to the New Roscoe the audience consisted of two men, a dog, and myself. It was like a completely different venue on this occasion, packed out almost to capacity, with a decent sound system and great atmosphere.
