Bayou Gumbo @ The Junction (Otley)
I like to think of myself as a man of the world, a raconteur, a philanthropist and all those other words I remember my father using when I was a lad to describe himself to some hapless stranger over a pint (he never ever knew what they meant!) However, even men of the world can be caught off guard every now and then.
The 42 Tones: Sloppiness Counts
Ska. There's something about Leeds and ska music. The 42 Tones sit nicely right in the middle of that genre, and from all accounts these are a very young seven-piece band doing quite well for themselves.

Jeepster look uncomfortable. Their Noel Gallagher-style rock ballads are underpinned by some nice piano and Hammond organ, but like a potato sandwich, they also lack intrigue.
There's no wasting time with Loqui, 3 seconds in and I am already reaching for the volume knob. Here I am presented with two bitesize chunks destined not to fit in anywhere whilst still remaining a bit too familiar and of course it comes as no surprise that Loqui don't seem to care either way.

Like a musical energy drink pumped full of sugar and caffeine, Mother Vulpine rattle around these 2 songs like they are being shaken around in a box by some giant hands.

CD Central @ Leeds Central Library - get your music heard...
Are you a solo artist or member of a band, and have you produced your own CD? If the answer to these questions is yes, then you can help yourselves and help CD Central Library get Leeds' musical talent out of the bedrooms and backrooms of the pubs, and out there into the city and beyond!
I was instructed by Cooler Green to write a review for their gig at the Rocket on Friday 1st February.

Those of us braving the wind and rain on Sunday night were treated to a quality evening of unplugged entertainment as the Well played host to another Naked Bar Guitar evening.
These Arms Are Snakes @ Cockpit
Due to early stage times, and late busses I arrive at the Cockpit just in time to catch the last few tracks of WhoresWhoresWhores.
Various Artists: Bilge Pump / Pifco - split single
Now this is going to be a noise fest. With these bands you just know it - two of the nastiest, brashest, craziest acts in the city.
It is often said that 'genius steals', however he was usually 'round mi girlfriends' at the time and has ten or fifteen people willing to testify that he's 'a good boy, always in church on Sundays and would never steal so much as a middle-eight'.
The Cockpit is absolutely packed. In fact, we showed up earlier to find the queue winding all the way back under the arches, left for a swift pint thinking it would calm down, and found a similar sized queue, with different kids when we returned, which was after the doors had opened.
The Rosie Taylor Project: This City Draws Maps
It's that time of year when some of us hope to stumble across a blissful soundtrack to accompany the impending summer days.
A couple of weeks ago I went to a gig at Joseph's Well to see a friends band. The support band that night was Divided By Zero and they were great.
Local band Parva blast out any remaining hangover from last night and prove that Leeds can not only host a festival of this quality, but can also supply the bands that make it rock.
A half full Fibbers sees local lads Sixty 6 take to the stage for their first ever gig. The youthful three piece burst into their opening number with a degree of confidence and if I'd not been told you wouldn't have thought it their first time on stage.
Huddersfield's five-piece Hipstream feature the literally amazing vocals of Natalie and Gaff over the top of some equally amazing blues-soul-jazz created by Ski's lead guitar alongside Ian, Reid and Paul.
A few weeks ago I teased Kez, lead singer with local band Albeit, after they secured a support slot with Scottish rockers Idlewild at Bradford University.
Xi sign national agency/management deal...
Leeds' Xi have announced that they are now part of the Pogomotion roster, alongside such up-and-coming acts as Candyheads and B-Movie Heroes.
I'll admit it, before this gig I had never heard of Scars On 45. We were mainly there to see Redwire, so when we got into the Cockpit and saw that the big room was open I was surprised.
Neils Children take the stage and fire into their opening number. Alarm bells start ringing immediately.
There's going to be a sequel! The charity CD will launch this year's CD at Leeds newest venue The Platform
Interview: International Trust
When it came to getting a Q&A with Leeds Music Scene there was only one man they could turn to - the guy that misspelt their lead singer's name and alluded to the fact that he'd like to stone their heads in...
The Lodger to release a new single and album in May 2008
'Life Is Sweet', the second album from Leeds band The Lodger, will be released on 19th May on local label Bad Sneakers Records.
Saturday night saw the debut for new club night: Fake Hips upstairs at the Library Pub. Having arrived slightly late to see the full set from openers The Electricity In Our Homes, I can't say I regretted my tardiness from what I heard.
Situationists: This City Holds Us All EP
Formed in their native Sheffield in 2006, Situationists have received much critical acclaim prior to this debut EP, notably from Radio 1's Steve Lamacq and XFM's John Kennedy.
The fact that all of the material is written by one person is astounding. Any further developments by Antony Arcuri should be followed in the future, as this demo proves - Carl Shooter - Shoot the Runner 2007.
DTTR set to release their third compilation album: 'Something I Learned Today'
Leeds-based independent record label Dance To The Radio have revealed the tracklisting for their forthcoming compilation album, their third compilation in as many years.
You can't help but wonder what kind of band would have an album cover featuring a naked woman being mounted by a giant scorpion.
Liam Fray was known around the North West prior to the formation of The Courteeners as one of Manchester's most promising and popular songwriters.
Local showcases are always unpredictable and without pretense thus making them top reviewing candy. Occasionally rousing, sadly more than often easily forgettable and very very rarely awe-inspiring.
Red Go Green Stop @ Carpe Diem
Seizethedayer Festival, in which promoters of local bands get together and organise an all-dayer, featuring a carefully selected mixture of said local talent at Carpe Diem, a basement venue with a good atmosphere a mere brick throw away from Millennium Square.
Del Scott Miller: My Timing Will Win Me Few Friends
After checking out some fantastic unsigned bands, I'm left with this CD on my desk staring up at me, expectant eye, awaiting a review.
Lapdog's second EP comes after their sold out "Now It Can Be Told" debut and has been achieving some recognition for the band since the launch in November.
Brutal Tinkerbell @ New Roscoe
If ever there was a lesson for new bands to learn then Future Sons Of Rome are it. 1) Your singer should never wear sunglasses unless you are playing on the main stage of a festival or have sold out a well lit arena.
It's nights like this that show what's great about the Leeds music scene. As I'm walking to the Well it pisses it down.
Varsity Drag @ Jockey (Wakefield)
There is a little buzz about Wakefield tonight as a member of the much loved Lemonheads is due to appear in our very own Jockey.
Western Suburbs are Joss Worthington - Vocals, Guitar, Keys Marc Ransley - Guitar, Pedal Steel Michael Lawless - Bass, Vocals Katie James - Drums Western Suburbs take their inspiration from songwriters and groups such as Smog, Bonnie Prince Billy, Wilco, Pavement, Mercury Rev and Red House Painters etc.

So summer is now over and it's time for Steve Kind and his Panama Promotions team to get back into the fray, but this time three times a week.
Clone, dressed in their shades, have an uneasy obsession with writing songs about the stars and planets.
Tonight showed just how much I enjoy spending my time down at Joseph's Well. Less than 24 hours after being played on national radio, a Peel Session no less, the Lorimer boys are out in force again; Chris on the doors as usual and Jock doing the sound.
The Accidental: There Were Wolves
This is The Accidental's first album. The collective draws its membership from the bands Tunng, The Memory Band and The Bicycle Thieves and the album was largely written through online collaboration.
West Yorkshire bands given opportunity to feature on a SXSW sampler CD
West Yorkshire label Chocolate Fireguard have announced an opportunity for local record labels, bands and musicians to contribute to or feature on a SXSW Promo Sampler CD.
Nerve Engine wield their guitars, with the precision of a surgeon's scalpel. Barrage after barrage of "Gugga Gugga" guitars rain down and some intricate playing shows off the highly flexed skills of the band.
Somewhere there is a local pub that thinks The Tonic are the effing business and musically there is no denying it.
"The female REM". No matter what I read, in either local or national papers, I cannot avoid seeing the wonder that is Leeds' Bodixa being described as a female version of REM.
Electric Mud Generator @ New Roscoe
So tonight sees me journeying out to the outpost known as the New Roscoe to take in two local old-skool metal bands I've heard good things about.
Support tonight is from fellow band member of Graham Coxon's band, however I didn't manage to catch his name.
The Blind Lemons @ Blue Bar (Harrogate)
Good lord. A decent gig in Harrogate. Might have known they were outsiders... We check out the fantastic but poorly-monikered Blind Lemons at the Blues Bar.
What immediately struck me about this four-track CD when I first listened to it was the quality of the production.
The Shining Reserves start the evening off with some delightful loud and proud tracks. A fairly tight set with a regular rock rhythm and original local band sound.
indie pop
Distophia play cool lo-fi indie with franticly fast guitars and pop melodies. Lots of distortion and effects muddle the sound a little, and whilst they're a small-compact-venue-sort-of-band, ideal for the Fenton, there are what-would-that-sound-like-at-the-Well moments.
garage punk blues
Previously plagued by critique suggesting they are a one-song band, Orka deliver a two-fingered salute in the form of a primarily home-recorded demo CD.
Carling Stage line up announced for Leeds Festival
Leeds Festival 2006 organisers Mean Fiddler have today announced the line up for the Carling Stage, with local bands The Sunshine Underground, The Pigeon Detectives and The Research all making appearances.
As those of you out there who are musical types will know, the wonderful world of MySpace allows you the excellent facility to advertise your wares via the listing of "upcoming gigs", marvellous!
My day started off surreally, an early morning phone call from my old dear asking me if I've heard of a band from Sheffield, called Milburn?
Mungo Hump sounded as proficient as they did interesting as they blasted through their first two songs but the set averaged out from that point onwards.
The Royal Park Cellars has a rapidly growing reputation, and gets better every time you catch a band down here.
Tonight sees another staple D.I.Y. gig at the Fenton, promoted by Pray For Hayden and showcasing three local bands talents alongside the Winchester based-Second Monday who have travelled up the M1 to see what all the fuss is about in our Musical Mecca of Leeds.
Band Profile: Dusty Not Digital
indie experimental rock
It's a chilly Saturday night, and my feet have past the point of freezing. Upon reflection, acid pink sling-backs are unsuitable for an occasion where any amount of walking is required.
Modeliste @ The Royal Oak (Halifax)
Live music returns to Halifax town centre with the launch of "The Dog House", a new band night upstairs at The Royal Oak pub.
I want Ludwig to appreciate that I am stingy, harsh and critical. If everything were given a 5 Star rating the whole process would be a total waste of time.
Another five-band line up at Joseph's Well marks another Northern Sound Exposure event. What makes these gigs so enjoyable from my point of view is that the organisers always try to feature new bands and it's the perfect opportunity to check out some of the potential bands of tomorrow.
Slipknot @ Leeds Festival 2000
When I set off to the Leeds festival this year, I'd decided upon writing a full length weekend review.
It should be said upfront that emo, or post-hardcore, or any style of rock that may come close to verging on those descriptions is not usually my forte.
Tonight was a night that saw the merging of football and local music, and whilst the action on the field fell short of inspiring the music was, as expected, spectacular.
The Thermals: The Body The Blood The Machine
When they recorded their first album on a beat up old four-track in a local hotel room, Portland trio The Thermals and their label Sub Pop boldly stuck two fingers up to the industry and said "look we can have a hit record even with out all the expensive tweaks." Quite right too, More Parts Per Million went on to be an underground smash if there is such a thing and the tinny production only added to its joy.
Bridewell Taxis re-formed after a 14-year absence with a triumphant hometown show in front of a sell-out crowd at Joseph's Well in October.
Terra Diablo: Swings & Roundabouts (album sampler)
These tracks are from Terra Diablo's soon-to-be-released debut album on Zuma. Terra Diablo are a kind of Glasgow cross between Leeds bands Four Day Hombre and Parisman - in that they operate at a similar near-breakthrough level and get serious local respect.
White rabbits, white rabbits, white rabbits. What a smushy cuddle of fluff and kitten-claws, lop ears and trucker caps The Research are.
Carling Stage bands announced for Leeds Festival 2005...
Mean Fiddler have today announced the line up for the Carling Stage at Leeds Festival 2005, which includes local representation from ¡Forward, Russia!
Unsigned Stage to return to Leeds Festival for a second year
Last week we revealed details of the Futuresound competition, through which six local bands get the opportunity to play at the Leeds Festival (Bramham Park, August Bank Holiday weekend) and this week follows the announcement of the Lee Unsigned Stage, undoubtedly the success story of the festival in 2005.
A simple blend of sweet, melodic melodies, infused with a warm glock rockin beats cooked up by a lean mean fat guitar grilling machine. Basically its indie pop.
Redwire declare on their website to be "the most exciting band to come out of Bradford ever!" Considering at the minute the only other Bradford band I can think of are Embrace...
Architecture In Helsinki @ Brudenell Social Club
The first two local bands on; Sky Larkin and Wild Beasts showed themselves be among the new vanguard of bands making, as the saying goes "future music".
'Ow do, Sirs? It would stand to reason, that within a year or so of the Arctic Monkeys' slightly bemusing and chaotic arrival onto the music scene, there was suddenly gonna be a deluge of two bit chancers picking up guitars and warbling away in local dialect.
The Scaramanga Six @ Royal Park Cellars
Sheffield noise mongers POLON pose a curious schizophrenia question. Just what is it that they want to be?
The Music @ Roadhouse (Manchester)
Review featured with permission from www.manchestermusic.co.uk Not unlike the amount of feather boas and leopard print present for the Manic Street Preachers, or backwards caps for Limp Bizkit, the traditional demin clad bowlheads fill Manchester's Roadhouse for the most hyped band this year.
Ryan Spendlove is name to watch. He has a pretty face, a sharp-tongued soulful voice and the kind of snarly delivery that every generation likes to call its own.
A well-made market-pitched record with little of interest for the music fan. The rather Coca Cola Championship song comes from Embrace's good friend Chris Martin.
Jumpcut describe the opening track of their debut single release as "a pop tune and as such a blatant attempt to crack the Top Ten", but it can safely be assumed that this is tongue-in-cheek optimism from the instrumental three-piece.
Come with me on a little journey in time all the way back to late 2001 when this reviewer was reluctantly in Heaven and Hell with some pissed-up pals.
First on were local band The Stays. Having seen them play a few months back, the progress they have made as a live band in such a short space of time was apparent from the outset.
Various Artists: ¡Forward, Russia! / This Et Al - split single
"Everything Is Brilliant In Leeds" reads the t-shirt slogan of a certain bunch of Loiners currently dominating the nations airwaves.

The Pipers: Medicine Cabinet EP
Imagine, if you will, The Spin Doctors meet Pavement with Ray Lamontage as the lead singer. That's what we have here with this fantastic EP from The Pipers.
Little Man Tate: About What You Know
Never mind yer Arctic Blondes or yer Milburn Monkeys, Sheffield's Little Man Tate are proper Lords in a post-post-industrial wasteland where the birds will let you cop a feel for a spam fritter and the alcopops pour like bile from the local BNP candidate.
Although not advertised on the initial line-up, the appearance of Morassi caught my eye at last Friday's Joseph's Well HMV Showcase gig.
The annual Bright Young Things showcase has been very much like a 'Kinder Surprise' over the last few years - yes you may look back fondly enough, but you'd rather have a 'Fizzy Cola Bottle' (Futuresound competition) or even a 'Flying Saucer' (local band nite at Joseph's Well) because, at the end of the day, while the 'Kinder Egg' promises much, open it up and a crappy toy that you play with for five minutes and then lose down the back of the sofa is all that confronts you.
This is a very smart live recording. It's raw, punchy and pretty effective. Sawthroat don't do complicated stuff.
If there was any evidence needed that unsigned local music is thriving in the UK then here's another example.
The Dizzy Club @ Boston Spa Jazz Club
I am from the small village of Boston Spa on the outskirts of north Leeds but until tonight I have never checked out the local jazz club, which bears world acclaim and attracts the big names on the Yorkshire jazz circuit, as well as visiting artist from the USA.
Leeds bands and music fans lose the popular BBC Raw Talent radio show
With immediate effect BBC Radio Leeds has decided to cease broadcasting Raw Talent, the weekly two-hour programme of new regional music presented by Hull's Alan Raw and produced by Katie Noone for BBC Radio Humberside.
Seismic Loveshift: Any Old Price
"sei'smic love'shift (n.) - geological earth movement akin to orgasm commonly occuring in West Yorkshire, created by the tumultuous confluence of crisp drumming, melodic bass, clean guitar and vocal mellifluence performing some of the most thoughtful, inspiring and haunting music of the twenty-first century" - SL.
The Pigeon Detectives: Romantic Type
My first The Pigeon Detectives show moved me to crank out an (unsubmitted) article for local leg-pullers No Quarter entitled, "The Pigeon Detectives Disband After Chance Encounter With Mojo: 1976 Roots Of Punk Edition".
On this seven track CD "doh, ray, me" Andie Mills makes a strong case as a distinctive solo performer.
Why is it that only guitarists can pull off wearing a cowboy hat? And why is it only drummers who wear vests?
