My interest in Alyra was aroused a month or two back after watching them gig at Dr Wu's. Although an exact recollection of the night's events was hindered somewhat by having quaffed several tankards of ale I do seem to remember enjoying the mixture of emo-tinged breakdowns, sweeping post-rock atmospherics and violins - yes, violins - that Alyra proffered forth that night.
I just made it to Rio's in time to catch Cursed Diamond doing a pretty decent a cover of "Fell In Love With A Girl" for their final song.

A good crowd turned up for tonight's free Barfly sessions gig but there was plenty of room and it could have been promoted a little bit better because many of the genuine fans who would have paid to see these bands knew nothing of it.

This release sees the return of rock veteran Jimmy Chamberlain, getting behind his drum kit again following his involvement in some of the most memorable musical moments of the 90s, as drummer for both Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan.
Amiina (formerly Amína) are an odd band. Four Icelanders better known for their connection with Sigur Rós more than anything else, they play an instrumental music that is hard to classify.
You can't fault it. This is as good as it gets. Instant Species have fully evolved, grown to maturity and had babies.

OK, this is getting ridiculous... yet another Icelandic band ventures down south for some loving. Ske (which means 'happening' in Icelandic, but 'slut' in Japanese) are a collection of writers and musicians that work in the fields of theatre music, film music and TV ad jingles that decided to make an album of guitar based pop songs.

The fans are soaked, the band are soaked, even the ceiling is soaked. Funeral for a Friend's support is nothing short of triumphant as the 5 self confessed Welsh Valley boyos evacuate the stage concluding a set of vibrancy, urgency and enjoyment I had not accounted for.
It about time the best band in Leeds came back to claim the unofficial crown from the local indie kids.
