Part One of a two-part interview with Leeds band Chichino, who are set to release their new single "It Could Happen To You"
Western Suburbs have a very familiar sound and one that can surely only work in their favour, emulating current indie scene darlings such as Lowgold and Grandaddy.
New record label to emerge in Leeds...
A new Leeds-based record label - "Performing Chimp Records" - was officially launched at the start of this month with the release of its first title onto the streets of the city - the album Hypertension by local guitar-maestro Jon Gomm.
Just as the simple album title so glaringly suggests, Jim is Jamie Lidell's most conventional release yet...
Instant Species have their pies at the ready
Instant Species will release their 4th album "Meat Pie Arguement" in November (date to be confirmed).
Whole Sky Monitor: Bland Bland Bland
There's such an obvious joke opportunity in the title of this record that I'm having to put a lot of effort into actually writing an honest review, instead of falling back on a cheap gag.
Shallowend: Shining Brighter / Tigers
Back in May last year I reviewed Shallowend's first release "The Waterfall" EP and at the time made the point about the difficulty I faced in being objective in reviewing a band where I new one of the members quite well.
Daniel Pearson announces his song-a-week project, "The Blueprint"...
Leeds-based singer-songwriter Daniel Pearson has begun his 'songwriting experiment' The Blueprint, during which he will release a brand new song every week for the next 6 months.

The debut release by David Thomas Broughton will be "The Complete Guide to Insufficiency", a five track 40 minute CD on the Leeds-based Birdwar Records label that was recorded in one complete take in Wrangthorn Church hall, Leeds.
With a name that sounds like a computer game, York's Red:shift are politically and poetically minded post-punk rockers.
The Dance To The Radio seal of quality gets yet more credibility with this debut release from Yes Boss.
The Shadowcops: Ready When You Are EP
According to their press release, The Shadowcops set out to be a "no bullshit, just 100% rock" band, one that combats the current trend of "shoe-gazing, boring as fuck bands who spend more time trying to look like a rock band than actually sounding like one".
LS6 Bands Tent line up announced for Unity Day 2006
Joseph's Well and The Engine Room have today announced the line up for the bands tent at Unity Day 2006, the Leeds 6 community festival taking place on Hyde Park on Saturday, August 5th.
This 4 track EP released on Loog Records centres around "We can never say goodbye" which is taken from the band's recent album "Statues".
Rock/Alternative/Progressive
Go to a folk gig... what is that about? Well, I've been into Kate Rusby's music since I got her excellent album "10" as a present from a discerning music lover.
"Oh no!" I think to myself as I read They Made Me Do It's press release. We are a techno/dance/rock outfit and we recorded this CD in our bedroom.
Cortney Tidwell: Don't Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up (Ewan Pearson Remixes)
It's not unusual to find dance-based remixes of indie artists left wanting, so when the title track from the Nashville-based Cortney Tidwell's 'Don't Let The Stars Keep Us Tangled Up' is given a dance-floor makeover you have every right to be dubious.
Being handed the press release my eyes were first to glance at the band photo, my initial opinion was not good.
Originally released last year in North America, Be He Me is the type of experimental indie rock which has already seen the Annuals compared to Canadian giants such as Arcade Fire and Broken Social Scene, though a much closer assessment would be to probably think along the lines of a more sonically substantial and sterile version of fellow US counterparts Animal Collective.
Female Huddersfield duo The Moot sport seven tracks of their naïve home produced reggae on this sampler.
Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames: Drop The Decade
Leeds' Dance to the Radio recruits Shut Your Eyes And You'll Burst Into Flames join the domination of New Yorkshire over the current music scene with latest release Drop the Decade.
Mutually parting company with your record company would probably knock the wind out of most bands' sails but not for Manchester trio I Am Kloot.
Designated Driver: Design At Edd River
Middlesex's Designated Driver do what a lot of modern Emo frat-party nu-punk rockers don't - they actually write songs that feel like they mean it rather than purely sounding good when you've got a skinful.
Brand New: Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades
Long Island's Brand New are, errm, brand new to me... funny git, bet they get that all the time. No seriously, I haven't listened to their music before - even though this is now the second UK single from their second album release - and it is the remixes and acoustic versions of songs that caught my attention at first.
The Dance To The Radio stable this week wheeled out their latest offering in the form of Voltage Union, and with such stable-mates as Forward Russia and The Pigeon Detectives I was excited and eager to sample the label's latest release.
Various Artists: The Trip: Compiled by Jarvis Cocker and Steve Mackey
Hold on those of you who suddenly got excited at the thought of a Pulp spin off group featuring messrs Cocker & Mackey, this is simply another installement in Family Recordings "The Trip" series.
When the press release for this CD stomped its way into my hands promising "two tracks of blistering, balls out rock" I was understandably excited.
Various Artists: Anthems From The Phantom
Anthems From The Phantom is a compilation released by fledgling record label Phantom Power Records, based in Sheffield, and consequently weighted heavily towards Sheffield and Derby artists though not exclusively so.
With nagging question marks over the quality of independent music in Britain it's always mightily refreshing to stumble across a promising outfit such as the Leeds based Vest For Tysso.
As a second encounter with Barnsley's badly named Gaia (and they're not even crusties!) is thankfully a little more promising but still cuts a firm trench in the middle of the rock/pop highway.
Released on the Glasgow based Soma label, home of thinking techno and house; this latest release follows a well-trodden and successful path.
Hayley Hutchinson: Independently Blue
York's Hayley Hutchinson has set up her own label, HayLo Media, to release this debut album of country tinged acoustic tunes.
Cardboard Cowboy: The Boxroom Tapes Volume 3
The latest release from Leeds' Cardboard Cowboy is their third slice of self recorded material straight out of the rehearsal room.
With the classic lyrics, sound, inspiration and even the look of model rock and roll bands, Broken Dolls release their new single 'Stronger'.
There's a world of male dreams, TV series and British films where the Ford Capri, wide lapels and the wah wah pedal combine to create power, speed and cool calculation.
Because of the Leeds hype-machine-like tendency of the Dance to the Radio compilations, all of a sudden twenty-odd unknown bands all of a sudden get thrust into the limelight and we get to see what happens.
All My Friends Are Dead: Days Of Sleep
Falling somewhere between the orchestrated Icelandic experimental pop sound of Sigur Ros and the dynamics of the post-rock genre sits the Leeds based 5-piece All My Friends Are Dead.
It is said everybody is worth their 5 minutes of fame. Be it car crash reality TV carnage or that guy who once streaked at Wimbledon, everyone deserves their moment of glory no matter how fleeting.
Serena-Maneesh provide the latest update in the Scandinavian invasion of British-branded indie. However, unlike fellow countrymen the Knife and Love Is All, Serena-Maneesh are far less experimental and sound far more familiar to British ears.
"like Sevendust battling it out with deftones and Metallica" - The Machine
After listening to this EP a vast number of times and reading through the huge press release and reviews and then searching through the over the top website the words of Bruce Campbell come to mind.
The Sleepy Jackson: God Lead Your Soul
The timing couldn't be better for the return of Australian eccentrics The Sleepy Jackson as they release the first single to be taken from their forthcoming album 'Personality'.
There's going to be a sequel! The charity CD will launch this year's CD at Leeds newest venue The Platform
There's something about The Cut that just keeps me coming back for more and it's frustrating that as a music journalist I can't articulate that je ne sais quoi.
As ever I'm late, it looks like I've already missed 2 bands and I've already missed the first song from Indicator.
Duels: The Bright Lights and What I Should Have Learned
There'll be no band on earth more relived to have finally succeeded in putting out a full length recording than the boys and girl of Duels.
18 months ago, Spiritualized were headlining one of the tents at Roskilde and I was in real trouble - the emotion pouring out of Jason Pierce and his crew was having a massive effect on my tear glands, and sitting down sobbing at how wonderful things were seemed the only option.
One thing I can never fathom about O Fracas is whether they're creative geniuses, or really rubbish. See, sometimes, all I can infer from the established Leeds four-piece's music is that they've had a load of particularly good ideas, but then decided to sack off rehearsal in favour of taking loads of drugs and piecing the sections together in a manner that seemed perfectly rational at the time.
Little Japanese Toy: Disused No 5
Well, first thing's first: Little Japanese Toy score a whopping 0/10 for presentation. The demo consists of a hastily scribbled on, almost unreadable CD-R.
Beautiful Feet @ Royal Park Cellars
I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that as much as anything else when it comes to gigs, the 'flow' of an evening's entertainment is as important as the quality of the music in catching and holding people's attention.
My interest in Alyra was aroused a month or two back after watching them gig at Dr Wu's. Although an exact recollection of the night's events was hindered somewhat by having quaffed several tankards of ale I do seem to remember enjoying the mixture of emo-tinged breakdowns, sweeping post-rock atmospherics and violins - yes, violins - that Alyra proffered forth that night.
I just made it to Rio's in time to catch Cursed Diamond doing a pretty decent a cover of "Fell In Love With A Girl" for their final song.
Arctic Monkeys: Leave Before The Lights Come On
Despite being a firm believer that the hype surrounding New Yorkshire's success story, Arctic Monkeys, is entirely justified I didn't want to believe the latest hype surrounding them...
Farming Incident: Please leave the state in the toilet in which you would wish to find it
Farming Incident are by far and away the most challenging horse to ride in the Wrath stables. They share none of the immediacy of there stable mates and with good reason.
Although all of tonight's bands are relatively young, its safe to say that when Saving Lenny take to the stage and begin their first song, they're the pick of the bunch.
The Ghost Of A Thousand @ Cockpit
It's minus four outside The Cockpit, as the Atticus tour rolls into Leeds, bringing with it four of the UK's finest punk rock and roll bands, and for most of the already sweating, baying throng inside, it's not a moment too soon.
The French Defence: A Guide To Nursery Rhymes
I have had my fair share of criticism of late. Some so called "Intellectuals" have branded my views as 'sub-standard', 'shod' and 'Pig-headed'.
The Swedish four piece trip daintily on stage, accompanied by a hurdy gurdy soundtrack that conjures up images of accordion playing moustachioed fellows and Heidi running through lush meadows.
I've only ever seen Nursery once, on that occasion they were opening up for Icelandic outfit Bellatrix over in Bradford, but from all accounts I remember it being quite a memorable set.
Already widely regarded as one of the most musically gifted and technically astute bands currently holed up in Leeds, tonight was another night where the immaculately attired red and black attack upped it a gear and unleashed holy hell all over another set of baiting followers and potential converts.
2002 - How was it for you?
The Cut @ Lawrence Batley Theatre (Huddersfield)
"Who needs Glastonbury when we've got Huddersfield!" announced the compère at the Noisebox Festival at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in the town.
Royal Park Cellars announce Xmas Xtravaganza show...
Panama Promotions have announced a special show to mark the end of their Autumn 2003 season at The Royal Park Cellars featuring no fewer than six acts from Leeds' and West Yorkshire's rock fraternity - and from farther afield - who will take to the stage in a single evening performance from 8pm to Midnight on Saturday 20th December.
Melodic indie-pop minstrels The Lodger have avoided rushing into recording their debut album, the band instead deciding to rouse interest through several single releases on a variety of independent labels.
Despite having come down with the latest illness to be going around Leeds, I still tried my hardest to wrap up and get out to see London's Garlic, who were invited back to Leeds by Panama Promotions after being witnessed playing a storming set at the opening Strychnine Lounge.
Demolition is essentially a greatest demos collection. The incredibly prolific Adams had 5 albums worth of material which he planned to release, yet has wisely decided to compile the best bits of all those different sessions into what is available from your local Virgin, Internet store or Sainsbury's now.
Colin Mounsey: The Hungry Pig EP
This vintage quality EP has five full-bodied songs from Colin Mounsey (aka The Hungry Pig). Colin is a recent solo arrival in Leeds as a fully-formed songwriter and performer with a lavish sense of musical adventure, having served time with Blue Planet and Anabasis.
Chevron's two-track CD release on the Valentine label is a chaotic splurge of grungy-school-kid rock with an unsteady blast of musical intelligence struggling to escape.
A good crowd turned up for tonight's free Barfly sessions gig but there was plenty of room and it could have been promoted a little bit better because many of the genuine fans who would have paid to see these bands knew nothing of it.
I never intended writing a review of this gig, especially as most of you were probably there anyway. But here goes ...
Transgressive hasn't half done well for itself. Just a casual glance at the arsenal of bands at their disposal tonight to showcase to a global audience displays that.
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex: Life Begins Again
This release sees the return of rock veteran Jimmy Chamberlain, getting behind his drum kit again following his involvement in some of the most memorable musical moments of the 90s, as drummer for both Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan.
Amiina (formerly Amína) are an odd band. Four Icelanders better known for their connection with Sigur Rós more than anything else, they play an instrumental music that is hard to classify.
You can't fault it. This is as good as it gets. Instant Species have fully evolved, grown to maturity and had babies.
The Alarm: In the Poppy Fields
The Alarms' fresh new CD has two halves. Tracks one through six are clear throated, sharp sounding 80s post punk rock, evoking U2, Echo and the Bunnymen, Big Country and The Alarm.
Interview: And None Of Them Knew They Were Robots
Dan Pullinger catches up with The Robots before their Out of Spite festival appearance...
With 'Hey There Delilah' firmly planted in the Top 5 of the UK charts, this gig tonight is most definitely sold out.
God love Alkaline Trio, the unflappable red and black macabre attack are one of those one-of-a-kind bands that unassailably distinguish themselves from the pack and become a staple ingredient of your listening diet with inherent ease.
Sounding like a hybrid of The La's accompanied by Beach Boys-esque style vocals The Restaurant open a mixed evening at the Vine in terms of style and quality.
Various Artists: This Is The New (art/goes/pop sampler)
I love art/goes/pop: they found me when they went looking and proceed to send me top quality compact discs like this little gem which compiles some of their glorious little upstarts onto one disc.
Can the quality of unsigned Leeds bands get any higher? The FutureSound 2000 has certainly opened a lot of people's eyes to the standard of music out there in Leeds, and if you think of the bands that aren't even playing...
Tonight, with James from Duels deputising for Rich (drummer, broken elbow), Leeds four-piece The Hair performed at the Brudenell Social Club supporting Good Shoes. Charlotte Oxnard managed to catch up with them for a few words afterwards...
indie pop
Black Nielson @ Brudenell Social Club
Review featured with permission from www.whisperinandhollerin.com EDIBLE FIVE FOOT SMITHS, denizens of the Adelphi in Hull were first on.
Ske: Life, Death, Happiness & Stuff
OK, this is getting ridiculous... yet another Icelandic band ventures down south for some loving. Ske (which means 'happening' in Icelandic, but 'slut' in Japanese) are a collection of writers and musicians that work in the fields of theatre music, film music and TV ad jingles that decided to make an album of guitar based pop songs.
Vessels: White Fields and Open Devices
"You're going home in a Yorkshire ambiance!" Vessels are five young men with a grand, epic vision that resonates throughout their debut album "White Fields and Open Devices".
Million Dead: Harmony No Harmony
Million Dead are f**king awesome. No. Seriously. Folks. They really are. If 2003's debut effort 'A Song To Ruin' passed you by somewhat, firstly you are indeed a foolish human being and secondly, this, album number two, if you give it half a chance, will suck you in and spit you out believing THIS is something special and Million Dead are one of, if not the, best band in Britain right now.
Funeral for a Friend @ The Refectory
The fans are soaked, the band are soaked, even the ceiling is soaked. Funeral for a Friend's support is nothing short of triumphant as the 5 self confessed Welsh Valley boyos evacuate the stage concluding a set of vibrancy, urgency and enjoyment I had not accounted for.
It about time the best band in Leeds came back to claim the unofficial crown from the local indie kids.
What is a Juma? Well it depends on whom you ask... To some it's a dance riddled drug fuelled monster of funky rock and roll.
Leeds Music Scene speaks to Rob and Paul from The Automatic after their set at Leeds Festival 2008
AntiProduct @ Brudenell Social Club
Sex, Drugs, Profanity, Leaping, Stripping, Heckling, Moshing, Exploding Equipment, Biting the heads off bats...
First up, playing to a half empty square, are The Motorettes. These Geordie guys aren't half bad really, even though they fit the mould of typical indie rockers.
Foo Fighters @ Leeds Festival 2005
Sunday started like any other day. Apart from this Sunday I happened to wake up in a field with 30 odd thousand other bear soaked, bleary eyed, unwashed, desperate bladder controlling festival revellers.
I give you fair warning. I am about to break the ancient, time-honoured and globally respected code of the International Covenant of Authors, Note-Takers, Writers, Reviewers, Interviewers, Talkers and Editors (or ICANTWRITE for short) covering the critique of musical releases and/or performances on precisely 2 counts. In fact one of these has already been broken. So apologies if this warning comes too late in the day and has already caused you unnecessary distress.
Iron Maiden @ Leeds Festival 2005
Dark sky in the morning, festival goers warning. Fucking brilliant ensemble of bands on the main stage tonight, festival goers delight.
