The New Shapes: There's No Escaping You
It's strange to think that Mersey beat was the sound of the youth in the early 60s when today it sounds so restrained and unthreatening.
There is a school of thought that says you shouldn't alter a proven formula, though in the case of sharply dressed retro-garage rockers The Hives this advice has been taken too literally.
Soledad Brothers: Voice of Treason
I'd like to draw an analogy if I may, (bear with me, this is going somewhere) between retro rock music and vintage clothing.
Farming Incident: The Flute of Shame
Collectors' item Farming Incident material without a pop hook to its name. Driving, insistent, nagging.
Decoration: I tried it, I liked it, I loved it
John Peel loves them and he's not the only one! This 3 track follow up to the astonishingly good "Thomas Pink Session" is another warning shot across the bows of the music listening public - whistling past with the words "you will adore us" ringing in the ears of all those who dare get in their way.
All bets are off. Vancouver Island quartet Hot Hot Heat will be your new favourite band by the end of the year.

Late on stage, indie guitar rockers Vue are only able to perform an abridged set, but the Americans nonetheless give a good account of themselves.
Black Rebel Motorcycle Club @ Leeds Festival 2002
Listening to Black Rebel Motorcycle Club makes you want to lie down outside and watch the stars while you let yourself slip into a trance and soak in the grungy retro grooves.
Quite an eventful Saturday evening in the end. Firstly, I chatted away to Aeon prior to the Juno-2 gig at Royal Park Cellars - the interview should appear on the site in the next week or so - and then I bumped into Bella.
It's just like any other Saturday night. You're having a good ol' laugh with your mates down at the tin.
Space rock performed by spaced-out teens, or childish stratospheric meanderings? Lines like "the future's so last century..." might lead you to the latter conclusion, but this is such a jaunty keyboard-driven number that it would be pointless to write it off.
Monday night and we visit the Duchess for a female-dominated night in front of a dissapointingly small crowd.
Royal Vendetta: Hopelessly Lost
Without knowing precisely what he's yelping on about, this song being so frenetic in pace, it sounds as though Jonathan Banks is lyrically charting some apocalyptic scene of urban decay.
Luxury Car: The Heart of The Matter
Perth (Scotland not Oz) trio Luxury Car provide an excellent glimpse into their electronic world throughout this four song debut.
Noise á Noise: Looking Ahead EP
Hailing from Los Angeles and yet taking influences from such UK stalwarts as the The Kinks, Buzzcocks and The Jam.
Archie Bronson Outfit: Der Dang Der Dang
This is the second album from the retro-blues rock group Archie Bronson Outfit. Hailing from the West Country before relocating to South West London, they studied art with, amongst others, members of The Duke Spirit.
You say nu-metal and I say nu-punk, nu-metal, nu-punk, nu-metal, nu-punk, hey let's call the whole thing off!
The Flaming Lips: At War With the Mystics
The Flaming Lips have achieved with their last 2 albums what evades 99.9% of all other 'successful' acts - whatever your criteria for classing that is.
Early starts usually mean the opening band play to no one; sadly for Medium 21 this was true tonight.
Infrasound selected for ITC Unsigned 2003...
Leeds' Infrasound have been selected for the official In The City unsigned event, a part of the annual international music convention that will take place in Manchester between 12-16th September.
The Casual Terraces @ Joseph's Well
It's clear from the outset that The Casual Terraces are determined not to be one of those bands quickly lost in the crowd of new talent emerging in Leeds.
The Zutons got the ball rolling with current single "Why won't you give me your love?", a perfect example of why they are so popular.
Lisa Brown are a bit of a surprise. With that name you expect a solo female acoustic guitar type thing going off but it's nothing of the sort.
The Charlatans: You're So Pretty We're So Pretty
The Charlatans are back with singles collection 'Forever. The Singles' and the first offering from this collection spanning their 15 year career is a reworking of 'the classic that never was' in the eyes of many Charlatans fans, 'You're So Pretty, We're So Pretty'.
According to their accompanying biog, The Cognition are poised to pounce on the big time. Name dropping comes as standard and despite some poorly chosen influences (thankfully none of which feature - Primal Scream (In that both bands have heads), Oasis (PLEASE GOD NO!), Nirvana (???) this double A-side lives up to the fanfare intro it's given.
'Radio Chichino' set to hit the Leeds airwaves during May 2008
Leeds band Chichino are set to host their own radio show. "Radio Chichino" will be broadcast from 11pm-midnight on 7th, 14th and 21st May (Wednesday evenings) on community station, Leeds Eleven FM, when the normally on-line station broadcasts on the FM frequency for a limited period.
The Lost 45s UK: Ivy / The Man That Time Forgot

The Hazey Janes: Fire In The Sky
Between their two October appearances in Leeds, The Hazey Janes release as a download single the song 'Fire in the Sky' plucked from their album Hotel Radio.
Cheer Up Mungo Hump and the Daddy Special: Untitled
'Sonic instigator' opens this CD with an infectious guitar riff, funky bassline and a vocalist that can actually sing.
These guys truly are caught in the middle - between carefully de-glamourized Streets-style urbanism on the one hand, and tightly coiled guitar rock on the other.
History has not quite made up its mind about Alan McGee's place at its table. At the helm of Creation he was once hailed as the saviour of the British independent scene, but then he signed Oasis and in one fell swoop invented AOR stadium Indie and lit the flames of chav culture.
Why aren't Cope playing live more often in Leeds - or have I been missing something? This CD is pretty good you know, with an almost retro/indie rock feel to it.
The Lodger: The Lodger Sings A Demo CD
The Lodger is starting the Britpop revival as of NOW. His lyrics are honest and insecure at times but he ain't no bedroom melancholic, no no.
The Sugars: The Curse Of The Sugars
The Sugars appear to have been purveying their darkly sweet brand of rock 'n' roll to us lucky Leodensians for some time now, but this semi-eponymous long player is their debut full-length offering.
The Rise provide a dose of familiar baggy indie guitar dance crossover on this debut CD - think Manchester 1990 if that description was too confusing.
Enticed only by a cool name and a bit of a bravado, it was with anticipation I awaited the arrival of what was to be one of the most vital live sets I've seen.
The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster @ Cockpit
Tonight is about no nonsense rock'n'roll. All 3 bands ply their similar yet totally different take on the "rock hard, then fuck off" philosophy.
Cardboard Cowboy: The Boxroom Tapes Volume 3
The latest release from Leeds' Cardboard Cowboy is their third slice of self recorded material straight out of the rehearsal room.
Andy Clare: Only in Your Glory
Andy Clare follows his three track demo with a consistently well tempered 6 track mini album "Only in Your Glory".
If this CD didn't have "we are mods" written all over it I could get fairly enthusiastic. It's fresh, it's shouty and it's self assured.
electronic
Herdwhite: Put Down Your Weapons
Andy Pegram sounds like more of a music lover and collector than a music creator. His solo digital empire runs to a lot of neat bits and pieces, lovingly spliced out of the earlier days of electronic dance euphoria.
It's Friday night, it's cold and it's wet, so do you stay in and get depressed because you have no friends, or do you go out to catch some top live bands from your local area giving their all in a great pub which sells decent beer, get hideously drunk in a nightclub afterwards, fall all the way home then wake up in a strange bed the next morning with little or no recollection of how, why or when?
Lemons and Limes: The Debut EP
Lemons and Limes, a new signing to Leeds-based GrooveStealer Records, get off to a great start on The Debut EP with opener Split Ends.
After the bloated corpse of Britpop (1992 - 1998) had finally gone up to the musical genre in the sky, it left its protagonists in an agonising position.
There's a world of male dreams, TV series and British films where the Ford Capri, wide lapels and the wah wah pedal combine to create power, speed and cool calculation.
Bonsai Kittens: Damn You Evil Women, Damn You!
One of the several quite good things about this CD is the little booklet that comes with it. There is a really lovely picture on the front (see illustration).
The Super Insurgent Group of Intemperance Talent: Black Amplifier
Well this is as 'out of town' as any review I've ever done: The Super Insurgent Group of Intemperance Talent (or The S.I.G.I.T.
Halifax-based covers band playing popular music
Various Artists: Roger / Boys of Scandanavia - split single
It's a funny thing, electroclash. A few years ago it was considered the in thing, the hip new sound from the underground, the tipple of choice for people who wear ghastly 1980s clothing and cake themselves in make up.
The Pigeon Detectives @ Islington Academy (London)
The London debut of the Leicester-spawned indie/retro behemoth passed off with a bang, as Leeds-based The Pigeon Detectives topped off the evening with a frantic performance.
In the mid 1980's The Jesus and the Mary Chain exposed the world to its first tastes of fuzz music with the feedback and noise set so loud that the melody was lost below a constant squeal - needless to say it was not everybody's cup of tea.
The Mooney Suzuki in Leeds. The Mooney who?! Luckily, a few raw enthusiasts for this New York beat combo managed to rustle up a crowd barely reaching a hundred, a real shame for a band whose live reputation back in the USA is huge.
Mod's back and comes in the capable hands of Leeds sharply cut Uptight. This four track EP is a gem of slicing guitar and nasal growling vocals.
Neon Neon @ Brudenell Social Club
It's the end of a very very long week and I'm shagged out. I'm at a gig that is packed to the rafters and I'm hoping that Boom Bip and Gruff can perk me up a bit.
Delmonica as a band has existed for a couple of years, growing and evolving. In one of their earlier incarnations the musical leaning was towards Detroit punk, New York garage & Motown, but the eclectic musical tastes of the band has resulted in the current line up and sound taking a more refined yet lo-fi twist.
I've heard a lot of noise about these guys and with their self titled album, would it get louder or would it have to be drowned out?
Attic Lights: Friday Night Lights
Imagine The Beach Boys, throw in a little of The Feeling with a dash of McFly. Add in string arrangements provided by Bjorn Yttling of Peter, Bjorn & John and you get Attic Lights, one of the most promising new bands of the year.
This certainly sounds promising. An indie duo consisting of a female singer/guitarist and her husband drummer (who really can play nearly everything: drums, various percussion, keys, and - wait for it - a kazoo.
Pink Grease are sexy in a trashy, New York fanshionista way, and with the inclusion of The Greasettes- three girl backing singers- you can guarantee there will be someone on stage you want to fuck.
This is the sort of record that it really should be very easy to dismiss as hapless retro-copyism. Ulster rockers The Answer don't so much wear their influences on their sleeve as practically have them branded on to their foreheads.
The Cribs take the stage to Somewhere In My Heart by sensitive Eighties tunesmiths Aztec Camera, but this soon turns out to be a red herring from a band who clearly want to be identified with a more en vogue music trend.
Chickenhawk's debut long-player is an ambitious and heroic montage of many different types of metal. Crunching riffs swing themselves between battering rhythms and off-kilter tempo changes, and are often interspersed with throat-destroying vocal theatrics and glitches of weird electronica.
The Somatics: Dynamo Mercurial
Insert the second album from Leeds' band The Somatics. Turn volume to a loud but enjoyable seven point five.
Arrived at the Well to find most people milling around outside trying to keep cool - so I missed most of the Casual Terraces set - sorry guys (however, I have seen them before and a fine band they are too).
There are plenty of things to like about The Plight's debut release. Whether it be the darkly themed artwork, the knowingly sarcastic lyrics or the old skool riffage, there is something here for everyone to get into.
Ooberman returned to West Yorkshire to celebrate the release of their debut album, The Magic Treehouse.
The Long Blondes have always been a band that I had heard of, had heard a couple of tracks, but could never quite match song to band.
funk rock
A year and half on from the first studio release of seven track CD "Stripes", five-piece Mojo Pin have developed a maturity and focus that sings out with real confidence.
This sound is so big now; '80s and '90s electronics rediscovered and manipulated in a way truly worthy of the 21st century.
You've probably already got records in your collection that sound like this one, the thing is, you probably stole those records from your dad.
These guys are from New York and it's safe to say they are cool cats. Lump 'em in the same bracket as The Faint if you must - essentially, "electroclash rock band".
The Pipettes: We Are The Pipettes
It's been two years since The Pipettes appeared on the musical radar and were tipped as being one of the next big things to happen to pop music.
Despite some speculation as to the true identity of The Rebellion Threat Kills, tonight's mysterious support band, it's clear that much of the enthusiastic audience at the sold-out Pack Horse venue were given a tip-off that Sammy USA were the act in question.
Pulled Apart by Horses: Meat Balloon
Most of the connotations carried by the name Pulled Apart by Horses likely centre around their [in]famous sweaty and lawless live performances.
Kava Kava are a real band doing clubs and festivals with total commitment to the music they love. It's acid funk and it's live on stage with pounding drums, big guitar and wah wah pedals.
The Shallow Call arrive surrounded by the type of over enthusiastic hyperbole which is usually reserved for world beaters like Radiohead, et al.
The cross-over between the audience for tonight's gig and that for last week's visit to the same venue by the NME's "Indie Rave" tour is not great.
If there was any evidence needed that unsigned local music is thriving in the UK then here's another example.
Watching glimpses of Great North Patrol live it wasn't difficult to spot a comparison in both their stage presence and their music to bands like Oasis.
Various Artists: Across The Pennines VI
The heightened sense of regional pride in The North can become a bit absurd sometimes. Then again, on the strength of the deeply Northern music on the sixth Across the Pennines compilation, perhaps a little superiority complex is allowed.
Def Leppard: Songs From The Sparkle Lounge
For over 25 years Def Leppard have been one of the UK's biggest rock bands, selling over 30 million records worldwide.
Motion City Soundtrack @ LMUSU
Support act The Matches' front man Shawn Harris boasted a flamboyant dress sense and quite a long tongue.

Nic Armstrong: The Greatest White Liar
Recorded at the currently hip Toe Rag Studios, produced and engineered by studio boss Liam Watson (cf Elephant and The Cribs) "The Greatest White Liar" is a fully realised retro-pop album of songs - and virtually a solo album to boot.

The Summerfield @ Joseph's Well
The room downstairs at Joseph's Well had been taken over by tables and chairs and subtle candlelight.
The Perfect Strangers @ Rocket
I almost didn't make tonight's gig. Having arrived early to interview Beat Route 62 I was called out from work and had to disappear back off home, luckily not too far away.
The Lodger @ Brudenell Social Club
People teemed like ants from the early evening into the comfort of the Brudenell Social Club - one of Leeds' best loved venues.
The second night of the reborn It's Gone Ballistic, the weekly local band showcase taking place at the Rocket Venue on a Tuesday night saw a male-female split.
The folks at Soundpeople who compiled this monster collection are probably the same sort who just can't help themselves trying one of everything at the pick'n'mix stall.
Storming out of Sweden are brother and sister combo Olof and Kristin Dreijer, aka The Knife. Unlike other famous brother and sister combos, the music isn't thrashy garage rock, nor is it arty punk pop.
I must admit, sitting in 'The Angel', (good cheap drinks here ladies and gentlemen), en route to 'The Roscoe' I was lost in the conversation from the other table - let's not go there but...
Black Nielson @ Brudenell Social Club
Review featured with permission from www.whisperinandhollerin.com EDIBLE FIVE FOOT SMITHS, denizens of the Adelphi in Hull were first on.
