Band Profile: Emily Levy & Rich Arthurs
Emily Levy (Vocals and Guitar) Rich Arthurs (Vocals and Guitar)
Pulled Apart by Horses @ Moor Music Festival 2008
There are countless laudable aspects of the weekend that will have been taken away by all of the festival-goers, but arguably it's Moor Music Festival's inclusive eclecticism that deserves the biggest pat on the back.
Leeds Metal
Simon Wainwright - Vocals/Guitars/Piano Rich Huxley - Guitars/Vocals/Piano/Rhodes Ed Waring - Keyboards Jason Miller - Bass Ash Ashwell - Drums
MonMon are a melodic and angular three piece from Leeds playing loud electric guitars over bass heavy backbeats.
Band Profile: The Half Nelsons
The Half Nelsons are a punk/ska/rock band.
Refreshing Heavy Rock from this Leeds based band! Rock yer f**king socks off!
heavy metal
The Four Planes... staple diet is chilled, laidback post-rock. Laid bare and unobtrusive at times, luxurious with rich guitar edginess at others, always alleviating and utterly brilliant.
alternative rock
Leeds band The Kaleids consist of Ollie Dickinson (Lead Guitar & Vocals), Mike Robinson (Bass & Backing Vocals) and Rich Thomas (Rhythm Guitar), three lads who have decided to make an original acoustic sound.
Delmonica as a band has existed for a couple of years, growing and evolving. In one of their earlier incarnations the musical leaning was towards Detroit punk, New York garage & Motown, but the eclectic musical tastes of the band has resulted in the current line up and sound taking a more refined yet lo-fi twist.
Dashboard Confessional @ Leeds Festival 2006
Chris Carraba and his band entertain the main stage with their heartfelt, lyrically strong tunes, laden with rich melody and lush vocal harmonies.
Arriving just in the nick of time for summer this breezy little episode is the perfect soundtrack to a Sunday afternoon of lazing in the garden as the sun rains down on your back probably giving you skin cancer.
This long awaited punk festival finally arrives in Leeds, but not to the punters' disapproval. With doors opening at four, most people are expecting local band, 25th Cock (as Rich from Not Katies informs me) to be arriving on stage soon, but instead they don't even bother to turn up.
The Bilderberg Group: This City!
A burst of harmonised vocals introduces this latest single from The Bilderberg Group, "This City". A jaunty, jangly guitar rhythm is the song's foundations whilst a swirl of organ sweeps below those rich vocals.
Cult chilled outfit Fridge have spawned yet another success with another 3rd of their ranks following in the footsteps of Four Tet and producing a damn fine solo project.
The Pipettes are a girl group to truly polarise opinion with some embracing their polka-dotted dancing troupe and others writing in to well-known music papers to protest against...
four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
Apologies to MABEL BLUE for missing the first half of her set, but boy did I like what I heard. I was a little later than usual (busses to blame again!) and when I opened the cellars door I couldn't get in there were so many people.
Hardly killing the buzz like their name suggests, these Leeds lads inject life into their brand of hardcore punk and 50's rock and roll with the addition of a sax and a trumpet, along with the odd "Oi".
"Lonely" imbeds itself in my head immediately. Unfortunately it's because it has the worst guitar lick ever.
Nerve Engine: Underneath The Sprawl
This is the second release from the multi regional band and once again self recorded in keeping with their independent attitude.
'Wait For You' by Tin Soldiers is a solid, light-rock ballad that follows firmly in the footsteps of Snow Patrol, Coldplay, and the like.
Rich (vocals/guitar) and Jonny (drums) played with Rick (bass) and Dave (guitar). They recorded an album called "Four" (released 2002).
Once in a while a CD comes along which is very special indeed. Today is one of those days. Produced by the band themselves and released on their own label this is Mondo's second album, "Before the Fall".
It seems this EP is soaked in past experience and endeavours, a creation of years of gigging, frequent band additions and changes, and a whole heap of direction shift and renewed vigour.
While the likes of Oasis, Travis, Stereophonics continue to produce bland, soul destroying excuses for music it has been up to the likes of Blur and Elbow to fly the flag for innovative home grown talent.
I was really dubious about this album at first, I mean, just how many singing frontman (or woman) bassists do you know?
Following on from a whole album full of stuff back in 2002, Samsa are back in the hunt with a three track EP that comfortably fulfills the promise of the best stuff on that first expedition.
Herdwhite: Lost In The Big City
I'm bombarded with a soundscape of guitars, synths, samples, beats, male/female vocals and industrious effects.
indie rock
Shearwater's 4th album "Palo Santo" sees existing band member Jonathan Meiburg rise from the shadow of Okkervil River's Will Sheff and take full command of the songwriting and vocal duties with positive results.
The Wooden Spoons: Tales of the Professional EP
The Wooden Spoons are made up of identical twins with an ear (or four) for lush melodies and the gift of good storytelling.
A grunge band with the muscle of an Ox and delicacy of a butterfly the Hull based band In:Audium deliver their new EP Digital Saviour.
Three long years I've been waiting!!! Finally Mover are back in town... hurrah!! I had never heard of the band before I saw them support The Bluetones in 1998 at the T&C but they completely blew me away.
All My Friends Are Dead: Days Of Sleep
Falling somewhere between the orchestrated Icelandic experimental pop sound of Sigur Ros and the dynamics of the post-rock genre sits the Leeds based 5-piece All My Friends Are Dead.
These guys are from New York and it's safe to say they are cool cats. Lump 'em in the same bracket as The Faint if you must - essentially, "electroclash rock band".
four day Hombre @ Joseph's Well
I was looking forward to this gig as I knew pretty much nothing about goad and Leafeater and hadn't seen four day Hombre for almost 10 months.
As the year comes to an end Vib Gyor can look back and smile. An ever growing international fan base, great reviews, spectacular live shows and even a mention in American magazine Entertainment Weekly and after listening to this latest collection of their work it suggests that 2005 is going to be even better.
The Bellrays: The Red, White and Black
The down and dirty bass guitar riff of "Remember" kicks off this second Poptones offering from The Bellrays before some rolling drums interrupt proceedings along with strangled guitar for company and then we're off into a rifftastic headlong dash to the chorus.
Buck 65: Secret House Against the World
This is the latest long playing offering from Canadian hip hop poet Buck 65. His voice is a deep and rich drawl spilling out his lyrics above the varying musical backdrops.
If someone asked me to name a decent band from Northern Ireland I would probably struggle. Ash are from around that area but they suck monkey nuts.
Well, I told you all about this gig - so those that didn't come along missed a real music treat! Johnson House are a real enigma of a band, and probably Leeds' best kept secret.
Kid Coda are billed as the North-Eastern equivalent of Super Furry Animals, which in itself is a massive tag for an upcoming band.
"Send in the cavalry from up above" request Australians Heather Barnes and Gareth Hudson of The Good.
Bad Beat Revue @ Joseph's Well
There are about a dozen people in the room but I think somebody has forgotten to tell Bad Beat Revue's front man.
The Faversham hustled and bustled with Leeds' scenesters and industry moguls aplenty this evening. Despite the Easter holidays being upon us once again (where do the years go ...
Dan Glendining is a song writer and musician whose previous band Headswim made a little progress into the national consciousness during the 90s.
Identity is a vital thing in popular music. What you sound like is never as important as how the audience relate to your personality.
This is Rob Nichols third and most assured album. It's comprised of relaxed and natural sounding arrangements of ten fine new songs.
Modest Mouse: We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank
Modest Mouse are one of my best discoveries of recent times. They bring together abrasive, left field musical influences and pop inspired melody which turns into something strange, unnerving and beautiful.
i concur: Lucky Jack / Build Around Me
As far as 'post-rock' goes, i concur appear to amass all the hallmarks of the genre with the precise and systematic grace of the consummate disciples they purport to be.
This is the third album from Jeff Klein, a New Yorker relocated to Austin, Texas. It opens with the title track, with lullaby acoustic guitars and some truly beautiful, sparse, throbbing slide guitar.
The memories are hazy, the order of events may not be quite right but I know two things; beer flows freely in The Fav and amazingly it didn't rain, or at least certainly not enough to water down my Sol or to kill any of the musicians on stage.
Tilly And The Wall: Bottom of Barrels
Sometimes the best ideas appear from the most unconventional of sources. Tilly And The Wall are no exception.
Ella Guru: 3 Songs from Liverpool
Key words. Exquisite. Pastoral. Oceanic. Delicate. Tender. Mellifluous. Treasured. Arboreal. Confiding.
four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
I had a feeling tonight was going to be a good night and it was. Steve Kind introduced each of the bands and let us know what we were in for...
Various Artists: United Sounds of the HiFi Club
This brilliant compilation showcases a whole music scene that a lot of the other parts hardly touch. American style funk, soul and R&B is not exactly leading edge these days.
Deadstring Brothers @ New Roscoe
Decisions, decisions! In town tonight there's Joseph Arthur at The Cockpit, Brendan Benson at the Uni and then his friends from Detroit, Deadstring Brothers at the New Roscoe.
When a band includes ex members of Guns and Roses and the singer from Stone Temple Pilots it is impossible not to draw comparisons between those bands and the new one those members have formed Velvet Revolver.
Seismic Loveshift @ Royal Park Cellars
After a day slogging round York, I thought some music was in order to round the night off. Having promised Seismic Loveshift I would try to see their full set this time (failed as usual - sorry!
Hayley Hutchinson: Independently Blue
York's Hayley Hutchinson has set up her own label, HayLo Media, to release this debut album of country tinged acoustic tunes.
Tonight was going to be another boring Monday night in as usual. I had planned to go the Faversham to see Four Day Hombre but as I hadn't got a clue where it was, and each of the maps I tried looking at all have different things on them, so I had resigned myself to not going.
In amongst the punks, skaters and frightening ska types in the local scene sit Beautiful Feet, an altogether more relaxed and calming bunch of guys, playing acoustic guitars and singing delicate songs about the brighter things in life.
indie pop
On paper this was an impressive showcase line-up of cross-Yorkshire talent tonight courtesy of Sandman magazine.
Johnny Foreigner: Waited Up 'Til It Was Light
Johnny Foreigner are a strange band in that they have consistently got great reviews including a 10/10 for their debut EP 'Arcs Across The City' on Drowned For Sound and an 8/10 for this their debut album from NME, yet they still remain an unknown quantity outside of their hardcore followers and have received little hype compared to what a lot of other new bands have.
In the dereliction of Leeds' nineteenth century railway arches Mark Linkous coaxes sublime and fragile music from a tangled mass of leads and electrojunk from the twentieth.
Edison Medicine @ Joseph's Well
Apologies to Mizkarrage of Justice, as I was late (I always seem to be late these days). I got there in time to hear something I recognised but couldn't place and as I was scrabbling round for a pen realised it was cover of something.
I love bands from Washington D.C. Especially bands that were or are on Dischord, the innovative, politically conscious and close knit label co-founded by Ian Mackaye (Teen idles, Minor Threat, Fugazi).
Bone Box: Death of a Prizefighter
Umm, this is brilliant. This kind of music not being played on Radio 1 is what is wrong with the world.
This is a third release from Batley's Itch. The passion, inventiveness and musical ambition of the 2001 debut "Spiralling Paper Planes" are still all there, with depth maturity and a surer sense of what Itch are all about.
It's nice to see former Neighbours star and sometime TV presenter Mark Little is doing well for himself, in a bizarre turn of events he appears to have given up shit-ass, late-nite, programs on ITV and 'found' feedback!
Manchester Orchestra @ Cockpit
Hailing from Georgia, the Manchester Orchestra are an annoyingly young band of incredibly gifted musicians playing emotionally charged indie with a dark edged sugar coating.
Whitehouse @ Brudenell Social Club
It's been a long, excited wait for this to come along, since promoter Benbow told me a couple of months back that he'd "only gone and booked Whitehouse".
This 10 track CD on Eggbert Records is a celebration of traditional guitar pop values. Danny Slack, Sam Forrest, Dave Hunt and Tom Johnson do timeless craftsman-built songs as if English punk had never happened.
Black Nielson @ Brudenell Social Club
Review featured with permission from www.whisperinandhollerin.com EDIBLE FIVE FOOT SMITHS, denizens of the Adelphi in Hull were first on.
Jeremy Smoking Jacket @ Packhorse
Two Bristol artists and Leeds' 7 Hertz made their way over to the tiny packed out room above the bar at the Packhorse for a night of fantastic experimental music.
Tupamaros @ Royal Park Cellars
First - an apology to NONE OF THEM KNEW THEY WERE ROBOTS - as I trotted down the steps of The Cellars for this my first "Collective AKA" night, I heard the final chord of their set and saw the singer lie down on the stage.
Click Here For Review 2 Sometimes a band comes along with a little extra. I had seen this band in Leicester on the Wednesday, its Saturday now and I'm in Leeds for only the third time in my life.
four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
There's a vibe in the air tonight, a tangible, swelling excitement that seems to accompany the Hombre lads everywhere they travel.
Before I start I'd just like to say that I've eaten the nicest tea I've had in ages tonight. It was a stir-fry.
Andy Roberts gives les Flames! a grilling...
Captain Skalet @ Leeds Arms (Tadcaster)
When Captain Skalet returned from downtown Tadcaster after a fruitful venture to forage for food (at Ceaser's Pizzas), the signs were looking good.
Regardless of drawing the short straw and getting the booby prize of first slot in tonight's line up, Movement appear to not give a flying turd that the crowd is thin and they are on before your granny's bed time.
That Fucking Tank @ Bar 1-20 (Huddersfield)
Tonight, in drizzly Pennine country with sleep in its bleary eyes and grit on its railtracks, we wander into this cornerhouse bar to find a large number of children onstage barely out of Huggies and totting up, I estimate, a grand total of four and a half years of age between them.
OFM @ Counting House (Pontefract)
"Doncaster's finest" reads the promo. Overzealous PR, or straight-laced fact? My mission - uncover the truth.
Colour of Fire, acclaimed local(ish) alt-rockers, opened up tonight in front of a reasonable crowd. Having just finished a considerable UK tour, they didn't seem at all tired, or perturbed to back in their regular gigging territory.
It doesn't seem all that long ago that you would see a Kaiser Chief every week, most often behind a bar.
Firstly I would like to begin by giving the woman on the end of the West Yorkshire Metro enquiries line a beating with a stick for knowing nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, about how to get anywhere in Leeds and particularly anywhere involving bus routes 51, 51a, 52, 52a, 53, 56, 74 and 95.
A hop skip and a jump into the next county and you will find these suave lads, who go by the name Ejectorseat.
Various Artists: Sounds of the Rhubarb Triangle
Whilst the 'Rhubarb Triangle' historically describes that polygonaceae-rich patch of land between Wakefield, Rothwell and Morley, I suspect that this compilation celebrates the musical output of the first-named metropolitan outpost.
Tonight may be billed as 'Forest of Sound Vs Gizeh Records', but the musically complementary and socially affable dynamic between the two rooms, and quite literal musical-chairs of collaboration going on in the Packhorse, negate any connotations of rivalry.
Mmmmm it's a bit nippy out! So I took the car, unfortunately the heater took so long to get going I was still cold (going blue actually) when I arrived.
Biffy Clyro @ Leeds Festival 2007
Mute Math - The Carling Stage The New Orleans quartet are perhaps only known thus far as recently re-doing the Transformers theme and for their excellent video to "Typical" which has attracted over 1 million views on Youtube.
We catch up with The Glitterati at their Leeds show supporting Wildhearts to talk about local music scenes, rock and roll, and record deals...
No it's not the Onion Cellar, though you'd be excused for referencing that particular venue. However, the grass is, indeed, green(ish), unlike The New Roscoe's shiny brass which is busy reflecting the populating of here, and the faces of solitary guys, with an honest lustre, (that match-making call was a good one).
Charity begins at home or so they say. Well I've never really understood what that means but charity was the aim of the nights over Monday and Tuesday this week at Joey's Well.
