The Dresden Dolls: Sing

The Dresden Dolls are often described as much in terms of musical theatre as those of contemporary rock music with genres such as cabaret-rock and theatre-punk being coined for them alone.

Misled Vision: Bitter Kiss

The CD cover is black and the font looks rather gothic so I am not expecting any summery pop as I slip Misled Vision's demo into the tray.

Velvet Revolver: Fall To Pieces

I'm starting to wish I'd been more into Guns n Roses when I was younger. I also wish I'd taken more notice of the advice that I'd like Stone Temple Pilots.

The Glitterati: Heartbreaker

Yet another band playing a part in putting Leeds on the rock 'n' roll map, The Glitterati are back with the second single to be taken from their self-titled debut album.

Volcanoes: Red Door EP

Volcanoes hail from the new Leeds (Sheffield). The four piece have a stripped back indie blues sound that although not devoid of influences, has a pretty strong personality of its own.

The Darkness @ LMUSU

The Darkness - while people are still quite rightly questioning the reason why British troops were involved in an unnecessary conflict in the Middle East and how much further Tony Blair can suck up to the mad, imperialist, "must have all the oil" demagoguery of Bush Jr, thankfully some light relief in the form of pantomime metal is at hand.

The Soft Explosions: Ride Between The Eyes

From the same rock family tree as Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Brian Jonestown Massacre come The Soft Explosions, a New York four-piece rock'n'roll combo in the classic Stones mould.

Sleeve: Untitled

Yet another indie/ rock four piece are here to stifle our souls. Hooray. This time it's Sleeve, a Sheffield formed band that "live in a dream." There's a bit more to them than the usual Oasis sound-a-likes.

The Invention: Untitled

The opening bars of the mistitled "Orgasm" are beautifully done. A well controlled and very sweet guitar phrase leads into Anthony Slattery's very good vocal delivery on a big open song.

Yorkshire Bone @ Mixing Tin

I get to the Mixo about 1 and a bit songs from the end of "unknown opener"'s set, so I can only comment as follows - it's a bit emo, a bit metal, a lot out of tune and a bit pretend standing still moshing at the front.

All Star 69ers: Transition

The opening guitar induces a wince, the shaky drumbeat turns the wince into a grimace and as the vocals come in teeth grind until there's nothing but flesh.

Fifth Goodbye: This Is My Impression EP

Sadly, I cannot remember back to my experimentation with guitar playing so the name of the guitar effects used to open Bandstand escapes me, so for my lack of technical knowledge I do apologise.

Billy Talent: s/t

Billy Talent: 4 Piece from Toronto, they seem to be getting some really good press at the moment and look set to be the next "Big Thing" with the angst ridden pocket money wielding teenage Sum 41 fans out there.

Wire @ Cockpit

You have to approach these things with caution. Do we ask too much? These guys can't have the same fire in their belly and why should we expect them too, besides, I'd heard and readily believed that Wire's own bloody mindedness means they only play new material with only an occasional foray into the 'earlier, funnier' stuff.

AB Negative: Moshy Peas EP

Defining yourself in a saturated market is hard at the best of times, and for many bands that choose punk or grunge the struggle is for acceptance when stereotypically most "piss poor local bands" usually fall into this category.

The Darkness: Permission To Land

You must understand, The Darkness are not a joke band. This is not the Electric Six playing it for laughs.

Herrod @ Packhorse

The Packhorse is one strange venue. The gigs are held upstairs in the attic right out of the way and it almost feels as though it's a secret club only a few know about.

All My Friends Are Dead @ Mixing Tin

I walk in to the Mixing Tin. It's just past nine o'clock and there's some movement on stage. Disconcertingly, Mr.

Four Tet @ Brudenell Social Club

After a feeding frenzy to buy tickets back in the heady days of summer, I was expecting a wee bit more excitement amongst the gig-goers for this one.

Against Me!: As the Eternal Cowboy

Against Me! released the best album, in my opinion, of 2002 with their full length debut "Reinventing Axl Rose" with Gainesville luminaries No Idea Records.

10,000 Things: s/t

10,000 Things have always had a reputation as a fearsome live band. Who am I to question that? The Things appear to be living out the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll dream to great success.

The Holiday Plan: The Wasting Time EP

The amount of shouty, disjointed emo grows bigger by the day, and it ain't about to die down any time soon.

Arch Enemy @ Cockpit

Formed from the ashes of seminal 90s metallers Carcass, Arch Enemy typify the ferocious intensity that is death metal.

Phluid @ Royal Park Cellars

A night of ROCK down the Royal Park... when isn't it these days? The Royal Park is getting a name for itself now as a more rock sort of venue, possibly due to promoter Steve Kind's insistance that all bands rock at all times.

Various Artists: At Least You Can Die With A Smile On Your Face

Do you have a special friend who sends you compilations of their very secret favourite tunes? Someone you love enough to want to discover new bands to play for them?

Phluid @ Rocket

The second night of the reborn It's Gone Ballistic, the weekly local band showcase taking place at the Rocket Venue on a Tuesday night saw a male-female split.

Duncan McFarlane Band @ New Roscoe

Hmm.... the New Roscoe you say? Isn't that where the tribute bands play? Well yes I suppose it is, but periodically they offer a night over to a group of performers who can really write songs and play them without pretending to be someone else.

Kill Hannah: Until Theres Nothing Left Of Us

Kill Hannah's 'Until There's Nothing Left of Us' saw a US release in 2006. Now, two years later, it finally gets a UK release with a modified tracklisting that sees a number of the album's original songs dropped in favour of three tracks from Kill Hannah's as-yet-unreleased-in-the-UK debut, 'For Ever and Never.' The result is more a 'best of' than a coherent album, but you can hardly blame Kill Hannah for wanting to make the best possible impression on the UK audience.

Hope of the States @ Cockpit

A band are generally on to a good thing if people leave the venue after their set in tears. OK, so sometimes a band might be just too damn scary and terrify young children into weeping.

Phluid: Cynical Smile

Punk glam rockers Phluid's debut LP 'Cynical Smile' does exactly what you want it to - plays loud, fast and with it's cross dressing, black-eyed, drug pumped heart on it's sleeve.

Tsuba @ Rocket

Around 100 people are gathered for the first Its Gone Ballistic at the Rocket Venue - a decent turnout for what is essentially a new event, in the middle of summer, and in the middle of the week.

Electric Six @ Brixton Academy (London)

An evening of pure cheesy-student-rock music laced throughout with lyrics befitting the kind of teenage cliché that surfaces so often on title sequences to All American Highschool dramas.

The Lazy Darlings @ Cockpit

There are countless questions that can, and inevitably have, been raised about the Futuresound Competition.

Instant Species: Robert The Bruces Spider

First, a little story... It was at The Junction in York 2003 when I felt truly rock and roll for the first time.

The Courteeners @ Academy

So then after months of waiting the night was finally here, our first chance to see the Academy. After an hour in Walkabout (who will do a roaring trade on a Friday night with two quid drinks compared to £3.20 next door) we got our first glimpse of the Academy and our first reaction was how busy it seemed.

Polaris: s/t

I wish I could start this review in the same way Polaris start this eponymous album of theirs. Because then you'd understand exactly what it was I was setting out to do.

Ten Seconds Of Chaos @ Joseph's Well

I attended this show not quite knowing what to expect as I had heard a mixture of opinions on several of the bands, but when I arrived to a relatively large anticipating crowd, I thought I might be in for a good night.

Wolfmother @ The Refectory

Welcome to the MTV2 Spanking New music Tour, tonight we have a real treat for you, with performances from Fields, ¡Forward, Russia!

We're Not The Cool Kids: I'm A Hungry Little Girl EP

If somebody told me that Mary Cook (a.k.a. We're Not The Cool Kids) lived an entirely solitary existence, away from anybody else's music or influence, I think I'd believe them, at least for a minute (that being the minute that someone informed me that there was a Springsteen cover on her EP).

Parisman @ Joseph's Well

Considering the headliner I'd expected to see more of a gathering than became evidently 'it' towards the end of the evening.

Various Artists: Showcase: West Yorkshire SXSW 2007

'This town is in disarray' claims the opening track from this sampler, but clearly not in a bad way. As an album it may suffer from being a hotchpotch of radically different offerings from local record labels, but I'd be surprised if any unwitting industry mogul - into whose hand this disc may have been thrust at the recent SXSW festival, and who actually took the time to give it a spin - failed to diagnose a clean bill of health for the current Leeds scene.
