Ali Whitton and the Broke Record Players: A Failed Attempt At Something Worth Saying

The Signs @ Mine

Considering there wasn't a lot of promotion for the showcase this evening at Leeds Mine this was one hell of a night.

IV Thieves @ Cockpit

Napoleon IIIrd @ HiFi Club

Even if he is unable to attend - by dint of incarceration, far-flung vacation or other indisposition - the embedded chronological awareness of any Leeds gig-goer will tell him at this juncture (6pm on the first Friday of the month) that he should be nestling within the subterranean catacombs of the Hi-Fi Club.

5TH JANUARY WOODHOUSE LIBERAL

Wakefield four-piece K.O.Kaine will release their album 'Play To Ghosts' on 28th July 2008 through the Casket / PHD record label.

Eighty Six plan January single release...

Eighty Six are planning a January single release. The band will be split on the previously-announced 7" record by Afraid Of The Dark.

Zero 7: Throw It All Away

Zero 7 are a funny one. I absolutely loved their first album 'Simple Things' and could often be found lounging out in my garden on a hot summer's day listening to their chilled out electro beats.

Pulled Apart by Horses to release a new single in January 2009

Pulled Apart by Horses have announced that their new double A-side single 'I punched a Lion in the Throat / The Crapsons' will be released on the 26th January on the Too Pure record label.

Bell X1: Flock

Considering Bell X1's criminally under-rated record "Music In Mouth" passed under most people's radar a couple of years back, I was more than excited at the prospect of hearing their new offering "Flock".

Persil: Snap Crackle Pop EP

Played conventionally and this record is total arse. It takes no form, heading off in no particular direction, only succeeding to maintain a sub-quality Stereolab style with female vocals over a lackadaisical synth-dominated backbeat.

Band Profile: The Lazy Darlings

The Lazy Darlings are a loose collective of musicians playing the songs of former Cardboard Cowboy frontman Dave James.

Latest split 7" single from Obscene Baby Auction Records...

Obsecene Baby Auction Records released their latest split 7" earlier this month. A picture disc the 7" features tracks by Bilge Pump and Brown Owl: "Both bands contribute a solitary song each which is exclusive to this record and they are both amazing so buy it, it looks really really great on your record player as well, believe." The single was limited to 300 copies - here at LMS we have no idea how many are left, if any, so you must be swift or they will all have gone.

Eighty Six release their "Army of Cats" EP...

The new record from Eighty Six - titled Army of Cats - is out now. The 6-track EP was recorded back in April with Pat Grogan and has been released on the Bombed Out Records label.

The Whip: Frustration

This record nearly rules. The Whip, it could be argued, are just another NME-gangbanger, leaning heavily towards the synth-heavy stylings of The Faint, Fischerspooner or even LCD Soundsystem, the indie dancefloors are full of them.

The Cut: Underneath the Skin

There is a marked progression between this record and the last supreme effort, 'Walking Lonely Streets': not only does the sound quality seem to fare far better, but it is in the musical arrangements and lyrics that the band truly prove their longevity.

John Southworth: Yosemite

It's not often that a pop record is created where each track tells its own cheery tale, but John Southworth has succeed in creating a record that puts a big smile on your face.

Hot Snakes: Audit in Progress

Audit in Progress is the third delivering from these American post punk rockers and it's their most complete sounding album to date.

Greg Dulli: Amber Headlights

Amber Headlights is the first solo record from Greg Dulli, ex-singer/songwriter of the criminally underrated grunge/soul outfit The Afghan Whigs, and founder of the excellent (and still together) Twilight Singers.

The Lost 45s UK to release a limited edition double 7" single pack

The Lost 45s UK release a double pack 7" vinyl single later this month with a launch party scheduled to take place at Baby Jupiter on November 25th.

Interpol: Antics

After the success of 2002's debut album "Turn on the Bright Light", Paul Banks and the Interpol boys return for their solid follow up record "Antics".

Badly Drawn Boy: One Plus One Is One

The latest instalment in Damon Gough's trophy cabinet is his 4th album One Plus One Is One, seemingly coming out of nowhere, with little fanfare or prior warning and only just preceded by the first single "The year of the Rat".

Andie Mills to release his tenth solo album

Andie Mills, singer with BBC 6Music faves Monmon, will release a new album on his Joli Rouge record label.

Emmet: Make The Noise

Just like the Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk, it seems that Emmet are one of those dance acts that fans of guitar based music are allowed to like.

Elbow: The Seldom Seen Kid

In a parallel universe, the likes of Coldplay and Keane are touring University Unions, and Guy Garvey is the one with the Hollywood actress wife, whilst his band sits proudly atop the bill at Glastonbury.

Mark Ronson: Toxic

Mark Ronson is that hip-hop guy who remixed "Just" by Radiohead last year. That song was fucking rad.

The Futureheads: Area

It's a bit difficult to review an EP when the record company only send you one track from it, but when it's one track that wears down the play button they may be forgiven.

Daniel Webster: While The Motors Are Humming Below Us

From the very start of the first track on this eleven song record, you realise that Mr. Webster knows his quirky pop music.

The Wedding Present: Take Fountain

Too raw to be a Cinerama record, but then you'd never have got a The Wedding Present record with strings and bongos on it?

Shatner: Thirteen O'Clock

The image of silent film star Harold Lloyd hanging from a clock face on the front cover feels significant - Lloyd is captured struggling with the hands of time.

Creature With The Atom Brain: I Am The Golden Gate Bridge

After two vinyl-only EPs, The Snake and Kill The Snake, I Am The Golden Gate Bridge is the first full-length album from the bizarrely named Creature With The Atom Brain, the brainchild (no pun intended) of Aldo Struyf.

Bad Beat Revue: Still Cheating

How amazing the Internet is! Stick this CD in your PC and Windows Media Player goes off to check its database only to recognise it as Jose Manuel Ramos with his well known song (???) "Cabeza loca".

The Sugars to release their debut single on new Leeds label Bad Sneakers Records

It's a double debut announcement today as brand new Leeds based record label Bad Sneakers Records reveal details of the debut single from Leeds three-piece The Sugars.

Band Profile: Prismic

Prismic were formed in late 2007. They are a three piece band who write and perform all their own material.

Pale Man Made: Show Of Hands

If ever a band sounded like they were a bunch of scruffy no good students who decided to record a few songs during fresher's week then it's Pale Man Made.

The Start: Untitled

The first thing that hits me about The Start is the female vocalist. She (Aimee Echo) has a very distinctive voice that you'll either love or find that it grates you, ever so slightly.

Bobby Six Killer: Assume The Position

A debut six-track mini-album from Leeds' latest ska kids, Bobby Six Killer and despite the hazy production it's certainly an addition you should make to your CD collection.

Battle: Break the Banks

I'm going to start this with a disclaimer - if you've recently enjoyed a seven-minute wildly creative single entitled 'Atlas', you needs to pick up the album by Battles, because I'd feel bad if any confusion in the names - combined with this review - would discourage you from picking up one of the albums of the year (Battles - 'Mirrored').

Thirteen Senses: Thru The Glass

Well, it's a young guitar band on a major label. So let's be grateful. But not for the first time questions have to be asked about what made 'em pick this one for the big push.

Tilly And The Wall: Bottom of Barrels

Sometimes the best ideas appear from the most unconventional of sources. Tilly And The Wall are no exception.

And None Of Them Knew They Were Robots: ANOTKTWR

It's always a surprise when something you happen to pick up because of the attraction of the band's name alone, turns out to be rather good.

Amen @ Leeds Festival 2002

Mary Anne Hobbs could do herself a favour. We all cringed as she jumped up and down effing and blinding in an embarrassing attempt to look cool.

Phoenix Bodies: Raise The Bullshit Flag

Jesus. This is sort-of the hardest review I've ever written. Ok, it could be a case of "if you like Converge and mean it, you'll like Phoenix Bodies".

Brody re-release debut EP...

Brody are re-releasing their debut EP on Native records, with an initial release date set for 9th December.

Glissando to release a new album in June 2008

Gizeh Records have this week revealed that they will be releasing Glissando's new record 'With Our Arms Wide Open We March Towards the Burning Sea' on June 23rd.

Herbert: 100lbs

Still revelling in the acclaim of this year's "Scale" release, Matthew Herbert has treated fans to a second 2006 album (albeit a re-release).

The Answer: Rise

This is the sort of record that it really should be very easy to dismiss as hapless retro-copyism. Ulster rockers The Answer don't so much wear their influences on their sleeve as practically have them branded on to their foreheads.

The Fret: Mr Beat

Sometimes I hate writing reviews. I got into it because I love writing and love music. But sometimes you have to review something that you really don't enjoy and it's horrible because it's no fun slagging off bands that put their heart and soul into their music.

Alec Empire: Intelligence And Sacrifice

Digital Hardcore - how aptly named is this record label? You'll not read a better description of Alec Empire's double-CD album in the remainder of this review so save yourself time, stop reading and get yourself down to your local record shop to purchase a copy...

The Gold Fever: California / Hear My Voice

Oh no it's that dreaded genre, a genre in which a band can be very very good or damn shite! Strangely enough The Gold Fever are neither, they have simple Ramones style guitar riffs mixed with indie melodies and vocals, yes kids, here we have another Indie-punk record, a genre which has confused us all.

Whole Sky Monitor: Bland Bland Bland

There's such an obvious joke opportunity in the title of this record that I'm having to put a lot of effort into actually writing an honest review, instead of falling back on a cheap gag.

Sonic Torpedoes: Hazy

This three-track promo CDR is awesome. No really. I didn't understand it at first but once my wife had taken over and proclaimed how much she loved the record after just one listen, I had to work out what it was that I had missed...

Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Show Your Bones

Oh my god it seems like we've been waiting an eternity for this record but it seems like all this waiting around has been worth it.

The Sunshine Underground release "Commercial Breakdown" on January 16th...

The Sunshine Underground complete a very successful year with a NYE show at the Faversham and kick off the New Year with their second single on the City Rockers record label.

Wheatus: Suck Fony

Every so often, an album comes along so wretched, so dire, so utterly worthless that it prompts you to feel like sitting by your garden pond and wondering what exactly the point of it was.

More Leeds bands feature in the UK Charts this week...

Leeds bands feature again in the UK music charts, with ¡Forward, Russia! and The Sunshine Underground both releasing new singles on independent record labels this week ("Twelve" and "Commercial Breakdown" respectively).

Host Media Centre offering Leeds bands and musicians free studio recording time!

Host Media Centre in Leeds has today revealed that it will be offer free two-day recording slots to Leeds' unsigned artists throughout 2007!

The Flaming Lips: At War With the Mystics

The Flaming Lips have achieved with their last 2 albums what evades 99.9% of all other 'successful' acts - whatever your criteria for classing that is.

The Twilight Singers: Powder Burns

"It's a rare occasion that a record makes as powerful an impression as this one" begins the accompanying press release but it just simply isn't true.

Modest Mouse: Good News for People That Love Bad News

Modest Mouse aka Isaac Brock is a part of a curious story. He's been making, apparently great, music for over 10 years, back when Britpop was just starting to infiltrate our midst.

I Am Kloot: Maybe I Should

Mutually parting company with your record company would probably knock the wind out of most bands' sails but not for Manchester trio I Am Kloot.

Paul Marshall: Vultures

More often than not, folk records come with a seasonal mood in mind, though in the case of Paul Marshall and his debut album 'Vultures' we have a record which seems to encapsulate all four seasons - equally as fitting for a frosty February morning as it is for a sun-drenched afternoon in July.

Adam Killip: 80% Proof

Winging its way from Leeds 6 comes Blind Bear Records' latest 7" single, a split affair featuring the ska-tinged 'adrenaline-fuelled' rock from Buzzkill and a delightful insight into alt.country from Adam John Killip.

Buzzkill: Dog on a Leash

Winging its way from Leeds 6 comes Blind Bear Records' latest 7" single, a split affair featuring the ska-tinged 'adrenaline-fuelled' rock from Buzzkill and a delightful insight into alt.country from Adam John Killip.

Squarepusher: Hello Everything

A purveyor of experimental music and a bass guitar fanatic, Squarepusher has become one of the world's most respected electronic artists releasing one acclaimed record after another on the mighty Warp Records.

Ash: Meltdown

Ash are a strange beast. After the success of their album '1977' back in 1997, they went all a bit mental and released 'Nu Clear Sounds', which was nothing but a disappointing mishmash of ideas, from blazing rock to nu-metal ish scratching and screaming, it was patchy at best.

The Horror: First Blood

Leeds-based The Horror have a legacy most UK hardcore acts could only wish for, with ex-members of Leeds seminal hardcore act Voorhees and with a frontman from the mighty Imbalance.

BC Camplight: Blood and Peanut Butter

This record has irritated me for the last few weeks, not because it is bad, quite the opposite in fact.

3milehigh to release their debut single in August

3milehigh have announced their debut single will be released on Monday 14th August. Titled "Always Watching" - and backed with "Plastic Superstar" - the single will be available via record stores and in digital format from iTunes.

Story Of The Year: The Black Swan

'The Black Swan' is the new long awaited album from Story Of The Year. Having never really been into them, or really giving them a chance to be honest, I thought that perhaps I was missing out on something, especially as they seem to have a major following and this will be their third studio album.

Leeds label Brew Records to release a compilation of Yorkshire's experimental music scene

Leeds-based record label Brew Records will release a compilation album in December. The label started in June 2007 when Thomas Bellhouse received community grant funding from the Scarman Trust and set out, along with fellow enthusiast and musician Simon Glacken, to document more of the experimental music bursting out of Yorkshire.

Matthew Ryan: Concussion

Another American singer songwriter signed up to One Little Indian's roster. The A&R guy there deserves a big pat on the back cos he's backed another winner here.

Afraid of the Dark to release new 7" single...

Afraid of the Dark will release a seven-inch record containing two new songs in the near future. Titled ...Till It Burns, it will consist of a song of the same name and another, Crow Pie and will be released on Happy Astronaut Records (www.happyastronaut.co.uk).

Music to the ears of Leeds 6! Cloth Cat offer free music courses...

Cloth Cat continues to run a series of exciting free courses based around music in association with the Workers Education Association, for people in the Woodhouse & Hyde Park ward of Leeds.

3milehigh: Cardboard World

If Cardboard World carried the sub-title "Made for an American market only" then so many stereotypes on one record could be forgiven.

Roe Sham Bo: Serotonin

Apparently Roe Sham Bo have had the luxury of turning down 3 record deals. One listen to their self-released album Serotonin will have you scratching your head and asking "Just who the f*ck were these record companies?" and did they come here in a time machine?

Paraffin Alien: Slouch EP

Ok, so it's a given, some bands are live bands that can put on a prolific show, but can't quite cut it when it comes to knuckling down and making a good record , whereas there are some, that are bland on stage, yet can come up with the goods for the listeners.

Mommy & Daddy: Live How You Listen

I read the biog and listened to the CD; I read the biog again and listened again; I re-checked the biog and listened a couple more times; I gave it to a friend - he read the biog and listened, he also re-read the biog and listened again; We both turned to each other and shrugged!

Kaiser Chiefs to release single on May 10th...

Kaiser Chief's debut single, titled Oh My God, is scheduled for release on Drowned In Sound's record label on Monday, May 10th, whilst the video is being played on MTV2 now.

Les Savy Fav @ Joseph's Well

Les Savy Fav record like a fucked-up Pixies and play live like complete mad bastards in an art-punk, post-hardcore vein, which is no surprise when they feature a front man like the bearded Tim Harrington.

MonMon to release a new EP in February 2009

MonMon are currently recording a four-track EP. The EP will be a follow up to the band's 'Repetition with Variation' release, which was championed by BBC 6 Music's Tom Robinson.

Band Profile: Blame Dave

Blame Dave began life in the summer of 2005. All original music from this 4 piece pop band. We got off the ground with 5 or 6 gigs this year including Unity Day, Grove Festival, Royal Park and the Primrose.

Following airplay of "Bless my Soul" on XFM this week, Cardboard Cowboy will shortly enter the studio to record some material with Jez (formerly of Swervedriver), whose previous credits include Primal Scream, Elastica and Ash.

The Future Of Transporte: The Ulysess EP

It's all round improvement for The Future of Transporte, not least in the progression from one mic recording to something resembling a mixed record, but also in the songwriting and making an audible racket dept.

Wild Beasts: Through Dark Night

Ever feel like you're being sold the emperor's cast-offs? That's how I felt listening to this record for the first few times.

Naked Flames: Animal Love

To say this is a comedy-metal record, I didn't find anything particularly funny or metal about Naked Flames' new album, okay so there a few bits that made me chuckle and brought a smile to my face but I'm quite miserable as it is so it really wasn't enough to keep my attention throughout.

The Dears: Gang Of Losers

Canada seems to be producing some great bands of late with many beginning to enjoy worldwide acclaim, perhaps it's time The Dears got a piece of the action?

Dogs Die In Hot Cars: Please Describe Yourself

What's this I see before? An album by a band that are currently being over-hyped down at the NME offices, nothing new there.

Amen: California's Bleeding

Casey Chaos has had a rough time these past three years. After recording Amen's third album his record label told him they would not be releasing it.

Frock: Frozen Jungle Entertainment

Great from beginning to end. I mean great as well. Fredrick Kinbom is a great. A Swedish singer songwriter working in Brighton, born in Stockholm with some tracks mixed in Rio de Janeiro.

The Minor Fall: s/t

Considering this Leeds supergroup's weight in their hometown since the release of this debut self-titled release, I almost didn't dare review this in case I didn't like it and they came and decked me.

Diverse plan EP release in November

Diverse have just completed the recording of their Mmmm... good music EP. Recorded at Sponge Studios, the EP consists of four tracks that the band say represents their sound very well - "melodic rock and pop with a catchy chorus and powerful vocals".

Glassjaw: Cosmopolitan Bloodloss

If the abrasive intensity of the verses, when mixed with angular guitars, shout out post hardcore then the catchy Britrock fashioned choruses really should not fit in.

Kaiser Chiefs to release "Oh My God" in Spring 2004...

Kaiser Chiefs have completed the mastering of their debut single - titled Oh My God - which will come out on the Drowned in Sound record label in Spring.

Franz Ferdinand @ Leeds Festival 2003

Back from the grave after 89 years, Glasgow's Franz Ferdinand are the logical next step in the direction this latest new wave revival has been heading.

The Sweet Chap: Superman 3 / Girl With A Curl

From a label who will only release things as MP3 downloads, which in my opinion, is a brilliant idea, The Sweet chap swings and saunters over to my place, bottle of vino in hand, sleazy look on face.

Red Stars Parade to release a new EP on November 24th

Red Stars Parade release a new EP, entitled 'Lutine Belle', through Thirty Days Of Night Records on November 24th.

Fulc: Biting Insomnia

There are few bands on the local scene that are capable of producing a piece of work as accomplished as this.

Mama Scuba: You're Long Time Dead So What's the Hurry

There can be few things more frustrating as an aspiring band than having an outstanding record ready to release and then having to sit on it while the wheels of industry slowly grind.

The Lost 45s UK: The Next Projected Sound Of...

The Lost 45s UK are famous for being a band that supported The Who but this EP shows that The Lost 45s UK are much more than being just a support band.

LCD Soundsystem: Sound of Silver

James Murphy is a man who owns lots of records, and judging by the influences present on Sound of Silver, it's clear to see that not only of the size of his record collection is enormous, the quality of it is too.

¡Forward, Russia! release their latest single - Nineteen - on Monday 13th November on Leeds' Dance To The Radio record label.

The Nervous Shakedown: Untitled

The White Stripes have a lot to answer for. Not only did they prompt the entire record industry to sign any band with a 'The' in the title, but they also made every label sign up the obligatory dirty blues riffage band.

¡Forward, Russia!: Life Processes

Let's take a leaf out of the Life Processes book and get straight on with this one (it's precisely three seconds before the first of many huge choruses on display here).

Wire Happy: Short Cycles From A World Of Bumps And Swirls

'Short Cycles...' is a strange experience, which I must make that clear right now. As Kevin Mottram (aka Wire Happy) kindly points out it was originally intended to be a soundtrack to a game; and I can't decide if that admission was a good one or not pre-listening.

Jim Noir: My Patch

Jim Noir's first single was a quirky piece of pop if ever there was one. His second offering bangs a drum to pretty much the same beat.

Shock Defeat!: How Did We Make It So Angry?

The modern age, it's a killer ain't it? With the millions of infobytes each of us has to deal with every day why is it that music reviews are running longer and becoming increasingly verbose?

Tindersticks: Waiting For The Moon

Tindersticks are one of the UK's most talented, and rather unfortunately, overlooked bands of the past 10 years or so, and 'Waiting For The Moon', their latest LP, should go a long way to help give the band the attention they deserve.

O Fracas: Factfinding EP

One thing I can never fathom about O Fracas is whether they're creative geniuses, or really rubbish. See, sometimes, all I can infer from the established Leeds four-piece's music is that they've had a load of particularly good ideas, but then decided to sack off rehearsal in favour of taking loads of drugs and piecing the sections together in a manner that seemed perfectly rational at the time.

Pop Threat: Dark Black

If you haven't experienced the rather marvellous Pop Threat for a while, you'll be intrigued by the fact that they sound nothing like their earlier days.

Underoath: Define the Great Line

It's hard to know where some bands' safety zones start and end. The balance between not pushing hard enough and regurgitating the same old tired lines versus trying too many different things and attempting one giant leap for musickind, is a hard one to define.

Silverlode to release their debut album

Leeds band Silverlode have announced the release their début album on the local Grain Division record label.

Paul Weller: Leafy Mysteries

A strange record this. There's a sort of lilting rural tune to it, but some almost clumsy chord changes going on underneath and an over-hit acoustic guitar (what is with big stars making expensive Gibsons sound like Yamaha beginner guitars?).

Jon Gomm: Hypertension

I remember the first time I saw Jon play live - it must be going on three years ago in the Packhorse I think, quite a gangly fellow I thought, bit of a Goth maybe, would he start singing about powder paint and lipstick and have a big moan?

The Pigeon Detectives release "I Found Out" on November 6th

Kram tune to feature on new British film...

Kram feature on new British film called "In A Mans World" by Lee Hutcheon, who handpicked the band along with 7 others.

The Victor Surge: Untitled

Statement or stupidity? Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. "One take thru one mic live recording" says the inlay, it may aswell say "Yes we know this sounds sh*te but we're still cheeky enough to ask for a review".

The King Blues: Save The World - Get The Girl

The King Blues have gone from strength to strength after forming in the run down back streets of Hackney almost 3 years ago.

Protest The Hero: Kezia

Protest The Hero could have played this oh so simpler. Vocalist ... high pitched wail of a voice would no doubt have suited any number of identikit extremo songs that could have been cobbled together in a matter of minutes.

Montana: Tarantula

I got excited because one of my favourite UK hardcore bands is called Montana and they're brilliant. Nope.

Buen Chico @ Joseph's Well

2 years ago I had the fortune to do a gig at a school in Halifax, where my band was supported by a set of kids from the school.

After having had the pleasure of catching this band live several times I had very high expectations of this album.

Glazed have finished recording their brand new single, the For Love Nor Money EP. Recorded in Zool Studios with producer Chris Holland the EP is the second recording Glazed have released this year after the Talk of the Town - Live in Leeds EP.

The Courteeners: Acrylic

On first listen I'd have said that this tune wasn't half as exciting as it liked to think it was (or indeed, as a large number of people - all more important than I - seemed to think it was.) Sure, it jangled, it jerked and it leapt, but it still sounded ever so slightly two dimensional.

The Old House to release a single on the Louder Than Bombs label

Wakefield indie-rock four-piece The Old House will release their latest single on the Louder Than Bombs record label.

David Viner: Mr David Viner

You've probably already got records in your collection that sound like this one, the thing is, you probably stole those records from your dad.

Kaiser Chiefs: Employment

It's the big one, folks. It's finally here and it's been given to me. On a first listen, it's like being reminded of watching those live shows from a year or so ago.

Superkings: Little Hope

Beautiful pianos and tear jerking melodies are the order of the day from Superkings. Based mainly on a skilled Joanna and forlorn vocals their lyrical content is quite simply depressing.

Pulled Apart by Horses to release their debut single

...Emo... Damm! I bet myself I could get through this whole review without mentioning that word. Bugger.

Wild Beasts to release a single on Leeds label Bad Sneakers Records

The Primms: Do You Know The Future?

The bottom line is I'm not a big fan of this record. There's 2 tracks I have by The Primms, one "Do You Know" sounds like muse caught on a slow motion recorder and the other, well that's just "nice".

Squirrel Records announce a massive 27-track CD compilation titled "Nut Boppin' Whoppers!"

Ske: Life, Death, Happiness & Stuff

OK, this is getting ridiculous... yet another Icelandic band ventures down south for some loving. Ske (which means 'happening' in Icelandic, but 'slut' in Japanese) are a collection of writers and musicians that work in the fields of theatre music, film music and TV ad jingles that decided to make an album of guitar based pop songs.

Swift: Untitled

"Swift will remove your mask, whether dressed in white or dressed in black." they claim. A surreptitious war on Slipknot fans?

This is easily in my Top 5 records of the year. It's absolutely amazing. The Take are from Wales, they've put out a couple of singles that are ace and now they have this beast.

Mumm-Ra: These Things Move in Threes

I tend to be a little wary of bands like Mumm-Ra, who take up instruments with the sole purpose of being in a band to pass the time - something all the members of this group admit to.

The Plight to release a mini album - 'Black Summer' - on 8th October 2007

Leeds band The Plight will release a new mini album, the aptly titled 'Black Summer', through the Visible Noise record label on 8th October 2007.

A.R.E. Weapons: s/t

As apposed to sounding like some raw disco-punk, or nu-indie-disco DFA sound-a-like, this record reminds me most of Grandmaster Flash & The Furious 5, Afrika Bamabaata and general dodgy 80s 303 led hip hop.

Band Profile: The Invention

The Invention are a four piece indie/rock band based in Leeds. They have played venues such as Roadhouse & Late Room - Manchester, Joseph's Well & Cockpit - Leeds, Barfly - Sheffield and Dublin Castle & Bull and Gate - London with positive feedback.

Sage Francis: A Healthy Distrust

I feel there's a distinct lack of hip-hop reviewed on this here website and as such feel it my duty to say a few words about this record.

The Wombats: Backfire at the Disco

I like The Wombats perhaps in the same way that I'd find it hard to dislike a real fuzzy wombat. Whilst real wombats have big old claws, The Wombats have big old hooks, and Backfire At The Disco is full of them.

Hallowe'en sees Buzzkill release their long-awaited album

Republic of Loose: This Is The Tomb Of The Juice

Sounding pretty similar to one of Josh Homme's myriad of side projects, Republic of Loose are actually closer to jazz/soul or Dr John-esque funk than dirty, scuzzy rock.

Shatner: Energise

By all rights Shatner really ought to be extinct. Given that the Big Brothers who quietly go about the business of corrupting the nation's youth decided to adopt the policies of Pol Pot somewhere around the late 90s, someone ought to have got round to sending Jim Bower & co to the glue factory by now.

The Caves: Polymorphic Light Eruption

The Caves second single release is an altogether rather jolly pleasant affair and is the kind of thing you'd put on the stereo to jump around to in a "Look I'm daft, me" manner to impress your embarrassed long suffering friends.

Wilt: Distortion

In their biography, Irish four-piece Wilt claim to be the emo REM, although I see neither as valid comparisons in their latest record "Distortion", which is a roller coaster of Americanised rock highs and lows that fits in well with the current music industry trends.

The Manhattan Love Suicides to release a new single on October 8th

This debut album from Washington D.C. four-piece The Apes is a powerful synthesised guerrilla war waged against anyone who will listen.

The Cribs: Another Number / Baby Don't Sweat

The A-side is "Another Number", a gloriously lackadaisical amble down lo-fi lane. This one just prods and teases and you think that any minute it will kick off, guitars a blazing, yet after a couple of minutes it just finishes.

Hey Negrita: Devil in My Shoes

It is a genuine mystery why some bands release singles, particularly when clearly they are so far from the sort of music that the single buying bracket of the public would actually listen too.
