For most bands, The Packhorse can be a difficult venue to play. There's no rise or platform, eliminating all majesty of "taking the stage", it's like walking to the other side of your living room.

I have to start by saying that this sort of music is not my usual cup of tea, so I was very dubious about going but finally got talked into it, as few mates of mine were going to be performing.

After an oh-so-tender piano intro from Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan has to move beyond the first phrase or two of '9 crimes' before you're convinced she's the vocalist and that Damien isn't exercising a bit of husky falsetto before getting into his own sound with built in purr-growl facility.

Lily Allen, the 21 year old daughter of rock and roll legend Keith Allen seems to have caused quite a stir of late and The Faversham buzzed this evening with a sold out crowd comprising of quite a mixed bag of individuals - there were those looking to check out the potential 'next big thing', there were those who were probably fans of her father and saw her mentioned in The Observer, there were minor celebrities (Alex Carter from Emmerdale) and even the odd major one ( Ricky Wilson and Simon Rix of Kaiser Chiefs fame).
Graeme Stanton: I'm Not Perfect
Apparently our very own leedsmusicscene has once called Graeme "The next David Gray"... who said that?
There's no wasting time with Loqui, 3 seconds in and I am already reaching for the volume knob. Here I am presented with two bitesize chunks destined not to fit in anywhere whilst still remaining a bit too familiar and of course it comes as no surprise that Loqui don't seem to care either way.
Despite his 14 albums, 2 number one hit singles, cult novel, industry awards and massive 90,000 people gigs, the chances that you have heard of Robin Auld are probably fairly slim seeing as all of the above took place in South Africa.

It's not at every gig where the between-band entertainment consists of various luminaries of the Leeds music scene, including members of The Scaramanga Six, les Flames!
If blues-rock is as close as you like to get to the blues and you like it revved-up and with the occasional touch of rowdiness, then a pretty positive forecast can be made for The Raindogs.
In the busy world of the Leeds Music Scene, there's always a few bands who slip quietly into the main arena. iLiKETRAiNS are one of these bands, playing their sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce, but always beautiful take on post rock theatrics.

Kings of Convenience: Riot On An Empty Street
Flashback a few years, and to Bergen, Norway. One of many Scandinavian towns and cities being proclaimed as new centres of cool, two guys released an album called 'Quiet Is The New Loud'.
These are rather depressing times in this country - as if the fact that no-one dares put their money within 50 miles of a bank account and that Norwich's county town may soon be Atlantis isn't bad enough, there's been barely the thinnest of smatterings of sunshine to brighten us up.
This one's been giving me some bother I don't mind telling you, and I'm relieved other reviewers have been so positive about it.
Having J Mascis at the helm may bring illusions of driving guitars, messily fighting with themselves, but here he has returned to his first instrument, the drums, along with Dave Sweetapple (bass), and Kyle Thomas of feathers to create a sound far removed from anything they are well known for.
First on were Philadelphia band Burning Brides who kicked off with loud, messy, head banging metal. The trio included a female bassist; Melanie Campbell and frontman Dimitri Coats who hammered his way through the set with ragged vocals, raucous guitar riffs and big, curly Slash hair.
Fountainhead: Footprints in the Sand
Bethany Dowsett sings with a Stevie Nicks' catch to her voice and Tom Stupple plays very good guitar in sympathetic acoustic straightforwardness.
Alternative Pop & Rock act with a nod towards the more obscure...
It was a funny ole evening and was one of those gigs where there were loads of Mums and Aunties and Pringle wearing Dads hunched in embarrassment at the back near the bar...
A lot of you will know of Geordie boys Carma. They tend to pimp themselves around these parts quite a lot.
The Boy Tate: In The Head Of The Ice Cream Girl
Well, thanks, Dave. 12 tracks, a terrible band name and an even worse title. I cursed the day the editor was born, reached for my trusty Star Trek phaser and set it to "snore".

Coaltrain @ The Junction (Otley)
Every once in a while your evening turns out to be so very different from how you planned it. A normal routine might be to get home from work, undertake a little desultory housework, perhaps have a nice cup of tea; and then pop down to The Junction to shoot the breeze and leave just before the band takes the stage (well, perhaps "stage" might be exaggerating a trifle).
Scouting For Girls @ The Refectory
Scouting For Girls have had a good run of it lately, three top ten singles and a number one album, shed loads of air play and to cap it all off a sold out UK tour.
Ocean Colour Scene: North Atlantic Drift
Accompanying this latest album by the band it seems the nation loves to hate is a press release ranting about that fact but stating that OCS have defiantly continued to produce great music and be a great band.
It's an early festive treat for punters at The Vine, although when I arrive it looks like a makeshift Berlin Wall made of sheets has been erected, with the bizarre prospect of a gig one side, and a huge fucker of a piss up with 70 quid plus rounds on the other.
30 minutes of careful mood setting music. It's rhythmically well under control, it's well played and thoughtfully arranged.
Kaiser Chiefs @ L'Aeronef (Lille)
A strange little venue, on the third floor of a shopping centre. The key word though is 'little'. About the same size of the Met, it's smaller than anywhere you're likely to find the Chiefs in this country any more.
Anticipation for this gig is palpable in the Met bar tonight and even the presently near-empty events room itself is buzzing.
Band Profile: Captain Wilberforce
Formed after an impetuous fit of song-writing one weekend early in 2004, multi instrumentalist / vocalist Simon Bristoll, aka Captain Wilberforce, has come a long way in a short time.
The Royal Park Cellars were decked out very differently tonight from how I have seen them previously.
Having been living in the big smoke for far too long, it's a very long time since I've been to The Refectory, in fact I was still at school in an era when Year 10 was called Fifth year.
This band will be big. When trawling through the thriving yet generally unimaginative Leeds scene, dominated as it is by generic pop-punk and the occasional 'innovative' ska movement, it's a relief to chance upon something a bit different.
A band are generally on to a good thing if people leave the venue after their set in tears. OK, so sometimes a band might be just too damn scary and terrify young children into weeping.

Medium 21: Killings from the Dial
It just gets tougher doesn't it? An album that would have been shockingly good three years ago is merely good at today's prices.
Playmates in deep throat shocker!
The Alabama 3 train of country blues electro rock rolled into town recently and we caught up with them for a brief chat in their dressing room after their gig at the Cockpit...
These days, The Library looks like an enormous music venue, only scaled down. It seems eerily suited to the This Et Al of old, draped as it is with imposing red and black curtains, but the recently-refurbished venue plays perfect host to all five - count 'em - acts on tonight's bill.
Opening proceedings tonight are local boys Infrasound. Coming across a little like Annie Christian or Delirious they specialise in riff heavy verses and more melodic, driving choruses.
All fingers and no thumbs here. Middle Finger Salute have an average age of sixteen, but sound well beyond their years.
Bridewell Taxis @ Joseph's Well
If you're claustrophobic, then Joseph's Well was no place for you on Friday night, which saw the comeback gig of legendary Leeds scallies, Bridewell Taxis.
Levellers @ St George's Hall (Bradford)
3 Daft Monkeys are a three-piece made up of a female violin player / vocalist (Athene Roberts), electric bass player Jamie Waters and male vocalist / 12 string acoustic guitarist Tim Ashton, who also plays a kick drum and occasionally adds whistle to what their website calls a "colourful carnival of sound".
Five bands. The Fav. For free. F me! It must be Easter Sunday. First on The Acutes bang out their bluesy rock which, when you consider the band have no bass player, brings obvious but perhaps unfair comparisons with The White Stripes.
The Psychedelic Breakfast: Untitled
Based in Newcastle, the Psychedelic Breakfast are wisely attempting to spread their wings outside their native city.
AntiProduct @ Brudenell Social Club
If there was one thing that fatally crippled the "nu-Brit-indie" uprising of last year, it was the lack of general excitement and, more to the point, characters about the whole thing.
Tonight was going to be another boring Monday night in as usual. I had planned to go the Faversham to see Four Day Hombre but as I hadn't got a clue where it was, and each of the maps I tried looking at all have different things on them, so I had resigned myself to not going.
Welcome to the Faversham. The pub is stuffed with students, NUS cards in one hand, trying to blag a cheap, fizzy, sweet, artificial, alcoholic drink, yet to realise the drinking maxim - no pain, no gain - nice tasting drinks are just not cricket.
Razorlight play ballsy punk-fuelled garage rock with a distinctly British pop sensibility. I like it; but I don't love it.

four day Hombre: The First Word Is The Hardest
I have tried to review this song in many different ways. I have sat myself down, at a desk, with a pen in my hand, a pad, a hifi system and an open window.
Uptight borrow from many sounds mostly from around the 60's/70's period to create a funky mod-rock vibe.
The Ordinary Boys @ Blank Canvas
"Can anyone tell me what city I'm in?" howls the suited and booted lead Kaiser, red pin striped arms flailing at his side.
This is Rob Nichols third and most assured album. It's comprised of relaxed and natural sounding arrangements of ten fine new songs.
The first band to be showcased were York-based Kanuba, a fresh-faced quartet whose funk-rock billing doesn't really reflect their versatility and ability to cause a stir with some heavy beats and bass lines.
Doubts over Alan McGee's sanity have become commonplace since his surrender of the once-great Creation Records to the likes of Mishka, Kevin Rowlands and the money men at Sony.
Tonight is a very unusual night at the cockpit, for the first time ever I have seen tables and chairs set out in room 2.
four day Hombre @ Joseph's Well
I believe change has to be accepted as an endearing facet of life in general, thus the exciting prospect of a mob-handed entourage of cello wielding students taking the stage in Joseph's Well already appeared enough to induce a clammy palmed curiosity.
Received wisdom has it that Steer are something of an acquired taste. On the basis of this performance it is difficult to fathom what it is that needs to be acquired to appreciate their music other than a pair of fairly basic functioning ears.
It doesn't seem all that long ago that you would see a Kaiser Chief every week, most often behind a bar.
four day Hombre @ Royal Park Cellars
There's a vibe in the air tonight, a tangible, swelling excitement that seems to accompany the Hombre lads everywhere they travel.
