Superface to release "State Your Business" on the GLP label
"State Your Business" is the brand new EP from alternative rock / pop band Superface, released on the GLP label (Groove Laboratory Productions).
There's something inherently fishy about Days Of Worth's take on metal. There's an aspect of the whole product that's not quite believable - as if it's all a facade in order for a taste of the 5 minutes of fame pie.
Capital State announce EP launch night at LMUSU...
After a long stint in London recording their forthcoming album and new EP Unforgiven Capital State will hit the gig trail again starting with the official EP launch night at LMUSU on March 30th.
Capital State: Middle Of The Night
Capital State are making a lot of the running on the Leeds scene these days. High profile gigs, a growing following and this smart new 3 track CD commits them to the West Yorkshire Premiership, with a special award for pleasing the crowd.
Saturday night saw a packed house at the Cockpit, where over 300 people were out in force to witness a three-band bill topped by Capital State.
Capital State: Revolution Thoughts EP
You have to respect Capital State. They just keep coming back at you. Ever since I saw them at Leeds Festival back in 2001, I've been intrigued.
Mishkin to release their "State Of Mute Fear" EP on Monday
Leeds band Mishkin release their "State Of Mute Fear" EP on Monday, 20th November through the Yorkshire-based Grillburn Records label.

I eventually got down (taxis eh, only an hour late) to Joseph's Well in time to see Sposh. Rumour has it that before the Sposh set, I'd missed a most excellent opening act called Mahwa.
State Of Error originally formed in March 2006, out of the ashes of Queensbury High School band Giant Inflatables.
The Maple State: The Joanna EP
In complete contrast to their press release, The Maple State do not specialise in "pulsing keyboard riffs", "sharp guitars" or "super tight rhythms".
Easy Now All Stars @ The Wardrobe
I hadn't been warned what to expect when I arrived at the wardrobe. I guess I was expecting a gig, followed by a DJ set.
The Maple State: For The Temperate Lives
Since forming in 2005, Manchester's The Maple State have toured extensively with the likes of Get Cape.
Mates of State @ Cardigan Arms
Ok. So. Origami. They look kinda like Sleater-Kinney; they sound kinda like Sleater-Kinney but they get straight to the point where Sleater-Kinney dance around the kitchen table and they smirk and joke where Sleater-Kinney are over-intelligent.
The first time I ever went to the New Roscoe the audience consisted of two men, a dog, and myself. It was like a completely different venue on this occasion, packed out almost to capacity, with a decent sound system and great atmosphere.
Anti-Flag are a 5-piece melodic punk band from Pennsylvania, USA. As their name suggests they are a band with some deep-rooted political ideals.
Mishkin like Slipknot and the singer probably likes Incubus. Not saying that's bad at all. I hope this is all in good fun because it's really heavy and groovy.
The Maple State: We Swear by the Light Life
Shuffling in on a drum pattern begging to be sampled, the first few seconds of the song potentially herald an interesting listen.
Band Profile: The State of Georgia
Acoustic piano and cello folk pop. Melodic, catchy songs from the heart with a hint of Kate Bush drama, Regina Spektor quirk and Joni Mitchell folk.

Farming Incident: Please leave the state in the toilet in which you would wish to find it
Farming Incident are by far and away the most challenging horse to ride in the Wrath stables. They share none of the immediacy of there stable mates and with good reason.
High up in the 7th floor apartment of The Breech's keyboard player Davoc, overlooking the streets and at the weird and wonderful architecture of Leeds buildings it seems an appropriate place to talk about the state of the Leeds music scene, and more importantly the burgeoning and healthy looking future of The Breech.
It's taken a while to come to the conclusion that this one-track demo shows quite a lot of potential, as, at first, I wasn't that impressed.
As summer goes into slow-dissolve Bodixa bring us their first CD and an opening track called 'Goodbye Winter'.
Easy Now All Stars @ Hard Rock Cafe
I hate to start anything on a negative point but... Flaming Lips! There. I got it out of my system. Not that it's a bad thing sounding like the 'lips, but it has to be a drawback when you realize that people could actually mistake your songs for unreleased 'lips tracks.
Band Profile: Reverend And The Makers
2007 saw Reverend And The Makers garnering fans from almost every quarter. They achieved gold status with their top 5 album "The State Of Things" still residing in the top 40, had 3 hit singles (including 'Heavyweight Champion Of The World') sell out tours and festivals appearances and 2008 promises to be even bigger.
Farming Incident release new EP...
Farming Incident have released their latest four track EP titled Please leave the state in the toilet in which you would wish to find it, which includes the tracks: When your political ideology..., Pinochet v a Payer, The Widening Gap and The Equaliser.

Adjágas is the Sami word for the mental state between waking and sleeping. Fuck knows what 'mun ja mun' means though...
Various Artists: ...and besides everyone knows it's not just boys fun: Manifesta Compilation #1
Everyone knows that women do not a good rock star make. That is, of course, utter bollocks, and Manifesta are out to prove it.

The Features: The way it's meant to be
Never one to shy away from publically stating the bleedin' unobvious - some might say to leave our readers in a state of confusion - I'll say that for significant portions of The Features' new single The way it's meant to be they remind me of Mclusky.
Band Profile: The Absent Minded Golfers
experimental electronic jazz
Joy, joy, joy. The slew of bands raping Joy Division's back catalogue continues. People who detest Interpol/Editors et al but like Joy Division are idiots.
The Twang burst onto the radar after one of NME's renowned 'adopt a band' schemes and up until now I saw their relationship in the same light as I did with Channel Four and Noel Edmonds, or Pete Wentz and his ego.
The Black Madonnas rock - they're on a Sonic Mook Experiment tour, they're mates with The Beatings, they recorded at Toerag before it was cool and the b-side of the new single is a cover of Gwen Guthrie's "Rent." Title track "Judas", follows a similar style to their last single "White Sands" and sounds like a slightIy chirpy Nick Cave backing a laid back to rawkous sound that by the time the last chorus chant of Judas comes in you can't resist.
Infrasound selected for ITC Unsigned 2003...
Leeds' Infrasound have been selected for the official In The City unsigned event, a part of the annual international music convention that will take place in Manchester between 12-16th September.
Insider information is great, but useless if it doesn't get shared whilst on the other hand there's some things that are better left unsaid.
Leeds bands invited to a free music industry networking day on 3rd June
Host Media Centre in Chapeltown will stage a free music industry networking day on Saturday June 3rd.
The Sunshine Underground: My Army EP
Well, *insert expletive here* me! I'm in love, or something... yes, I want to join their army, I even want a badge and everything.
And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead: Worlds Apart
What's the future of rock and roll in 2005? With many bands filling the charts with standard indie ballads, a lot of people would say it's in a sorry state as the expressionism is lost and individuality is getting harder and harder to find, whilst maybe others would argue that the fact this music is becoming popular is a sign of the times changing, of "alternative" music making it big in waves, and that maybe the influx of younger (and older) fans turning to the genre can only be a good thing?
Mary Anne Hobbs could do herself a favour. We all cringed as she jumped up and down effing and blinding in an embarrassing attempt to look cool.
The Rhythm Suite to take a break...
With two weeks remaining on their current schedule, Anonymous Groove has decided to postpone its weekly live music club night The Rhythm Suite until September in order to focus on two other events.
It's a tale of two girl bands and one power cut: Dead Disco trade in English sang-froid masquerading as kittenish cool, with a look typified by guitarist Lucy Catherwood thrashing artfully in skinny-fit Kiss t-shirt like some overheating android Sarah Harding clone in a Face photoshoot.
The Scare? Let loose in a recording studio? After seeing the lead singer Kiss rub his crotch on a crowd member's face, then convulse on the floor for several minutes, I never thought the day would have arisen.
Well, it ain't half as good as 'Lucky Lipstick', which I dug out the other day, subsequently finding myself in a hyperactive state of Chupa Chup withdrawal symptoms and ferreting around in my drawer for some glittery tights.
Leeds hosts a Musicians Networking Day - "The Future of UK Music" - at Host Media Centre
Host Media Centre in Chapeltown, Leeds, is holding a Musicians Networking Day on Saturday November 18th.
The Refectory was the venue for the legendary Mr Brown. No, not the famous soul singer Mr James Brown (RIP) but the ex Stone Roses lead singer.
In the latest single to be taken from Ray LaMontagne's acclaimed debut album, 'Trouble', 'How Come' adopts a laidback country style.
Leeds-based The Horror have a legacy most UK hardcore acts could only wish for, with ex-members of Leeds seminal hardcore act Voorhees and with a frontman from the mighty Imbalance.
The Music @ Leeds Festival 2002
It's the hometown dream... their favourite sons headlining the world's largest dual-site festival in front of 2,000 ecstatic music fans and with the news that Take the Long Road and Walk it may be hitting the UK Top Ten in a couple of days the atmosphere is electric.
Alexisonfire: Drunks, Lovers, Sinners and Saints
Alexisonfire are back. Whether that's a good thing or not is another matter. The single's title does not give much away.
A delicious 5 track EP of diverse, eclectic and electric ambiance from musical visionary Eddie Tadross a.k.a Governortea.
Released on the Glasgow based Soma label, home of thinking techno and house; this latest release follows a well-trodden and successful path.
The Kinison: You'll Never Guess Who Died
We're only a couple of weeks into the New Year and already the influx of poor quality, tight t-shirt wearing, American emo fuckwits has begun.
Helica's demo is quite impressive. Soft guitars, rock songs with melodies, subtle drums and a gorgeous female voice.
Being confronted by a venue the size of a half-empty aircraft hangar doesn't daunt York's heroic threesome.
You won't hear much like this on the Leeds Music Scene, nor I suspect on the national scene as Parisman have achieved a refreshing state where they're peddling a distinctive sound and not one carbon copied from artists of the current vogue.
The name Demon Summer immediately conjures up images of Satan chilling on a beach in Cornwall while the sun beats down on his already fiery flesh.
The Palms really fit the modern day bill with their take on the current Indie rock / dance scene ala Kasabian, but one or too vocal production issues and an occasional penchant for misguided fret-wanking hold them back from hitting the full throttle.
Once in a while a CD comes along which is very special indeed. Today is one of those days. Produced by the band themselves and released on their own label this is Mondo's second album, "Before the Fall".
This 3 track set from York's AKp, is being actively aimed at the copy it and give it away market. AKp aim to be "the UK's premiere avante-garde pop existentialists".
The Super Insurgent Group of Intemperance Talent: Black Amplifier
Well this is as 'out of town' as any review I've ever done: The Super Insurgent Group of Intemperance Talent (or The S.I.G.I.T.
The opening of bars of this magnificent number has Muse written all over it. Its 'Ahh ahh ahh' introduction lays the foundations of another of Matt Bellamy's signature stadium tunes, albeit by a somewhat different route.
Fifth Goodbye: This Is My Impression EP
Sadly, I cannot remember back to my experimentation with guitar playing so the name of the guitar effects used to open Bandstand escapes me, so for my lack of technical knowledge I do apologise.
It's been a funny few years for Incubus. From the dizzy heights of success with the mall-metal of their breakthrough album 'Morning View', to nu-metal's untimely demise and losing their bassist, the good looks of lead singer Brandon Boyd aren't the only thing that draws people to them any more.
As I sit down to write this review I find myself remembering last night at The Cockpit watching a hundred young trendies letting themselves go crazy to tracks on this album such as Hey Scenesters!, Mirror Kissers and The Wrong Way To Be.
As darkness falls all around the Headrow in Leeds City centre, most of the people on the streets are setting off to the trendy wine bars, the oversized clubs and most are incapable of stringing two words together.
The best of Yorkshire music and film-making talent comes together with 20/20/2 Vision
Following the launch of 20/20/2 Vision 2007 at the Faversham on 6th April, 20 local bands and 20 local film-makers have been working hard to come up with twenty music videos in just two weeks.
An exciting mix of European promise. There should be more of this available in the shops. Creating polyrhythmic grooves, to fantastic effect every up and coming musician should study the scrupulousness in this tribal chant.
Paint It Black - US four-piece hardcore outfit featuring Dan Yemin and David Wagenshutz from Kid Dynamite / Good Riddance fame.
Million Dead: Living the Dream
The band with the most un-P.C. moniker of recent years return with an endearing slice of raucous alt-rock riffmanship in promotion of their forthcoming album "Harmony No Harmony".
Don't be silly, of course they're still going. And they've just delivered an album so perfect it chills the blood.
A sparsely populated Rocket bar greets us tonight, surprising considering who is playing but nevertheless, we obtain some drinks and make our way to two of the twelve spare stools.
Oh, dear, they used to be rather good. I had to force myself to read the script that came with this album.
Host Media Centre offering Leeds bands and musicians free studio recording time!
Host Media Centre in Leeds has today revealed that it will be offer free two-day recording slots to Leeds' unsigned artists throughout 2007!
The Somatics: Dynamo Mercurial
Insert the second album from Leeds' band The Somatics. Turn volume to a loud but enjoyable seven point five.
Interesting and distinctive: these terms are sure to be among comments heard where Sarah Lawton plays.
Right to begin with I promise not to make any comments connecting poor bands with Bradford - I have recently had several, shall we say sharp remarks, pointing to the fact that I may be being unjust regards the city.
Pull Tiger Tail: Let's Lightning
So here are my simple and easy-to-follow guidelines for tossing off 500 words on Pull Tiger Tail:. One - Pull Tiger Tail are currently the Jonathan Wilkes to the Klaxons' Robbie Williams.
Support tonight is from fellow band member of Graham Coxon's band, however I didn't manage to catch his name.
Geezers of Nazareth: Gold Rush
Geezers of Nazareth is irrefutably the worst band name I've ever seen. There is nothing clever or witty about this name and anything associated with the word Geezer is inexplicable and makes me want to vomit blood.
Three may allegedly be a magic number, but everybody at the Cockpit for Futuresound's third competition heat must have been doing too much calculus recently, accidentally multiplying three by something else and making the end result only distantly related to our original magic number.
A Silver Mt. Zion: "This Is Our Punk Rock" Thee Rusted Satellites Gather + Sing
As openers go, they don't get much more perfect or sublime than the choral, vocal arrangement of " Sow Some Lonesome Corner So Many Flowers Bloom." On a personal level, it seems to summarize every regret, every mistake I ever made.
This evening, there are 10+ gigs taking place in Leeds, showing the very healthy state of things at the moment.
Rumours a-plenty, stories abound. Prior to tonight's gig, various fora have been discussing Smith's behaviour, where at Stoke, for example, he wanders off stage half way through a song, no-one knows where he's gone, and he appears up on the balcony watching the rest of the band play.
Pushbike Army: Sleeping In The Ditch
Lets face it, music can transcend plenty of boundaries, but I for one didn't think that time and space was one of them.
The Thermals: The Body The Blood The Machine
When they recorded their first album on a beat up old four-track in a local hotel room, Portland trio The Thermals and their label Sub Pop boldly stuck two fingers up to the industry and said "look we can have a hit record even with out all the expensive tweaks." Quite right too, More Parts Per Million went on to be an underground smash if there is such a thing and the tinny production only added to its joy.
On first hearing that Jewel had recorded a Pop album it seemed a strange move. This down to earth, cowboy dating, sensitive poet ditching her acoustic guitar in favour of a beat box?
The winners of Zane Lowe's Fresh Meat (?!) award open the proceedings with some rock and roll. Brighton garage rockers The Lodge have a heavy twinge of The Stooges about them, and play simple but catchy singles 'Piece of Cake' and new tune 'Noose'.
"Heavy as John Prescott's Wallet" Progressive/alternative metal - you decide!!!!!
Xi in gig moratorium pending new album material
Following their appearance this Wednesday alongside Capital State at The New Roscoe Leeds self-styled dark guitar rock exponents Xi have declared a moratorium on live shows to allow them to dedicate the next few months to writing a full B-list of songs for an album of all-new material to be released towards the end of next year.
Reverend And The Makers @ Cockpit
There's an air of anticipation amongst the crowd; The Cockpit is sold out and as this is the closest venue to Sheffield of their July tour dates plenty of people have made the trip up the motorway from Sheffield.
Band Profile: The Dragon Rapide
avant-rock
From the truly glorious, rousing opening riff, you can tell that 'Morden' is going to be a tale of teenage angst for our times and what a tale Good Shoes turn it into.
Various Artists: Sounds of the Rhubarb Triangle
Whilst the 'Rhubarb Triangle' historically describes that polygonaceae-rich patch of land between Wakefield, Rothwell and Morley, I suspect that this compilation celebrates the musical output of the first-named metropolitan outpost.
Band Profile: Unexploded Shells
Awkward indie noise-pop
Skiffle-Prog-Pop Merchants Pedalling Crooked Stories, Dark Nursery Rhymes and Wicked Tales Of Life In A City Ablaze. 'Rather Marvelous' said the Yorkshire Evening Post, 'Such an Odd-Band' said a man at our last swingin' gig. www.SilverlodeOnline.co.uk
The Somatics: Did You Ever Love Me?
A phone call from a middleman brought about a nocturnal meeting at The Somatics' Attic Studio on the high ground of west Leeds, where three levels of concrete stairway led to a warm welcome, and to brief but wide-ranging conversation (Gershwin, the Borderline, King Crimson, the Summer weather of 1928).
Marc Bolan & T-Rex: 30th Anniversary Singles
When music of the 70s is mentioned the word T-Rex usually follows. This highly influential glam rock band led the glam rock generation invasion and this collection of hits re-released on vinyl with exclusive b-sides shows their prevalence is still with us even after Marc Bolan's tragic passing.
Queens of the Stone Age @ The Refectory
Although the websites state that the support for tonight is The Eighties Matchbox B-Line Disaster, it is the fairly unknown tones of In Case Of Fire.
Tonight definitely feels like a choose-your-own-headliner affair. Partly this is attributable to the equal length of all three bands' sets, a modest thirty minutes each with very little procrastination, but chiefly it's the fact that support acts of such calibre and with this much buzz surrounding them are few and far between.
It's hard to believe The Refectory has finally been refurbished. Swish new floors, blue LEDs in the ceiling, changing lights in the pillars, very snazzy.
The Flaming Lips: At War With the Mystics
The Flaming Lips have achieved with their last 2 albums what evades 99.9% of all other 'successful' acts - whatever your criteria for classing that is.
Nathaniel Green @ Joseph's Well
This New Years treat sponsored by Bombed Out Records filled the well for a day with 11 rockin bands. Non-stop good music at Leeds/Britain's favourite venue (tests have proved) where the beer flows like, er, wine?
I must admit, I fall in love with songs far too often, but when The Dykeenies' 'New Ideas' first graced my ears, it was love at first listen.
Last Gang @ Corn Exchange (Brighton)
Last Gang appear on stage at 8.45 sharp and before they even strike the first note the odds seemed stacked against them.
It's a busy month for Leeds quintet Duels. A slot at T In The Park, two singles and the release of the band's eagerly awaited debut album, "The Bright Lights & What I Should Have Learned". Sophie Barnes asks the questions...
Now this my friends is indefinably kooky, a little bit whey a little bit whoa, slightly off centre, away from the norm, granted a bit geeky but nevertheless something smoulderingly original that you will not have come across before.
"Do you think your weekend could get better?" Mike Skinner asks the crowd as opening track (also the opener, title track and latest single from his new album) Everything Is Borrowed comes to a close, and he is greeted with euphoric response from the crowd packed into the new (though you wouldn't know it from the state of the floor) Academy in Leeds.
There's something about The Cut that just keeps me coming back for more and it's frustrating that as a music journalist I can't articulate that je ne sais quoi.
West Yorkshire / Bradford Unsigned CDs make a splash at SXSW 2007 in Texas
Huddersfield's Timeless Music Project is set to make another regional stir at the prestigious SXSW 2007 music conference in Austin, Texas later this month, as they once again take Yorkshire music, bands and labels across the globe.
1. You are showing your age. Zenith. If only we were allowed guns in the UK. Pete Docherty (the last remaining soap rocker© in the world) would be joining the list of M.I.A.s and personally we think that would be dull and boring.
SAVING LENNY The first impression I got of this band was the noise. Two guitars can often be noisy and in this instance that was the case.
Deerpark: It made her look spidery
The slightest thing about this CD is the relative frailness of the songs themselves. The tunes are gentle modulations around a couple of notes that suit the singer's range.
It's a huge testament to Little Man Tate to state that most, if not all, of their material tonight is treated like some kind of greatest hits collection.
Rhode Island: Sunshine Skylark Bridge
Type the words "Rhode Island" into Google and you'll find websites on The Rhode Island Department of Transportation, The Rhode Island School of Design and The Official Web Site of the State of Rhode Island - Your gateway to information about living, working, visiting, and doing business in Rhode Island.
Saturday of the O2 Wireless Festival 2007 - Leeds
Due to the proverbial heavens opening the previous day, my pals and I strode forth into the grounds of Harewood house in a non-too-Utilitarian fashion.
At the time of discovering that this particular tour was to take place I was convinced that Leeds (and the majority of the other cities involved) wouldn't see a stronger line-up (festivals aside) all year long.
The Cockpit is the place of dreams. Yeh, maybe a bit hyperbolic, but somehow smothered in truth. The venue, which is a stone's throw from the train station, is the hub of uncategorisable style dripping with the Northern nonchalant indie darlings clad in their sprayed on jeans.
Various Artists: Across The Pennines IV
Another ATP compilation hits the doormat and, with it comes another predictably unpredictable clutch of northern sparkle.
Kaiser Chiefs @ Wireless Festival 2007
Due to the proverbial heavens opening the previous day, my pals and I strode forth into the grounds of Harewood House in a non-too-Utilitarian fashion.
Gary Stewart Band: Tables, Trees and Tripods
I first came to hear of the Gary Stewart Band at the Futuresound heats in July of last year, when I was bowled over by their performance.
"What is love except a way to lose a friend? What is life except a means to an end? What are you except a reason for me to show a little hope?" Okay, okay, so I'm an over-emotional little soul; therefore, I will automatically take under my wing any waif-like 'singer-songwriter' (there are those heinous words again) with a tear stirring behind their eye and a pitiful rip in their denims, no matter if they're good, middling, or, quite frankly, rubbish, out-of-tune whine-bags.
Tom Napper & Tom Bliss @ Cock & Bottle (Bradford)
With this year's move to a new home, the world's oldest folk club is suddenly closer to Leeds than ever before, just when folk music is elbowing its way back into the general consciousness.
"Welcome" - a sign should state on the door "Welcome to the parade of terrible band names". Never has a bill seen a more dastardly set of band names since Butthole Surfers, Anal Beard and British Sea Power may or may not have appeared together.
It is unaccountable that Crosscut Saw don't seem to have a growing audience. The music room at the Grove is no barn with its licensed capacity of 80, yet going there to see them one can feel concern whether there'll be enough listeners to generate decent door money let alone atmosphere.
It's relatively difficult to pick up the style and genre of Stillman from the first track "Foreword".
All dressed in black; sultry with stiff motions, Mother Vulpine's heavy QOTSA style guitars lap over some gorgeous male to female harmonies.
Liam Frost: Show Me How The Spectres Dance
At only 22 years old, Manchester's Liam Frost, with the accompaniment of The Slowdown Family, has received enormous praise for his brooding and thoughtful brand of acoustic-folk-indie, likened to Badly Drawn Boy, and hailed by some as Britain's answer to Bright Eyes.
Kid iD: Please Tell Your Friends
I like the cut of Mr. Pelleymounter's jib. Firstly, he's got a pretty fantastical last name. Secondly, his sleeve notes include the words, "If you like this music then feel free to copy, rip, burn and pass it on to as many people as you like." This is an important lesson for unsigned bands; just get your music out there.
First onstage tonight are the Bradford-based quintet Seven Hours, who mix a dose of funk into their otherwise straight-ahead rock sound.
A few weeks ago I teased Kez, lead singer with local band Albeit, after they secured a support slot with Scottish rockers Idlewild at Bradford University.
It feels a little weird and a little scary having to write a review of an album based on a natty, paltry album sampler of only four tracks - a bit on the stingy side, if you ask me.
Listening to Casper Hauser is like being berated by a hip young mudslinger playing cracked 78s of warped folk songs recorded on a laptop. Casper Hauser's album, It's About Time, is eleven taut fraught shards of angular pop mysticism.
The Lodger: Many Thanks For Your Honest Opinion
"TWONG!" That is the sound of a bedspring snapping as a fully-grown man attempts to replicate the "pogo", a fairly basic dance move last performed by the subject in an indie disco circa 1995.
Various Artists: Leeds Urban Fusion 2003
According to the liner notes here in the CD wallet of Leeds City Council's 'Urban Fusion 2003' album it says, rather cringingly, that this is a CD "born from hip hop, r&b and urban flavaz" although what 'urban flavaz' is meant to mean I have no idea.
The Good Die Young @ Cockpit (acoustic bar)
As is becoming the norm with most reviews nowadays, I saunter in just after the first act Nick McCormick was scheduled to play with my excuses at the ready.
Wannadies @ Leeds Festival 2000
8am: Wake up in a comfy bed at home. This year I avoided camping, and I'm now glad that I made that decision.
Guillemots: Through The Window Pane
If Guillemots could invite anyone, living or dead, over for a dinner party, the table would look something like this.
The Strokes @ Leeds Festival 2002
Firstly let me state the thing this weekend confirmed for me, above all others, that people at festivals so often have such varied opinions about the bands they saw.
Dave Sugden asks about their new record label and forthcoming single release
Various Artists: Showcase: West Yorkshire SXSW 2007
'This town is in disarray' claims the opening track from this sampler, but clearly not in a bad way. As an album it may suffer from being a hotchpotch of radically different offerings from local record labels, but I'd be surprised if any unwitting industry mogul - into whose hand this disc may have been thrust at the recent SXSW festival, and who actually took the time to give it a spin - failed to diagnose a clean bill of health for the current Leeds scene.
Up first tonight are US based band Five O'Clock Heroes. Perfecting cheerful pop sensibility alongside dirty rock they possess a fiery sound, with each beat of the drum, each bouncy bass line and vocal melody perfectly executed to produce a catchy rock sound.
2manydjs @ Leeds Festival 2006
I think I'm getting old, or something, because it's taking me longer to recover from these festival things than it used to.
Young Professionals: Pleasure Time
I am a very easily confused person. I hold the Guinness World Record in Stupidity for asking a friend of mine, in a tone of complete seriousness and slight concern, "Tom, what day of the week is Thursday the 25th of October, please?" Therefore, the level of bewilderment currently accruing and simmering away in the vaults of fluff at the back of my brain is slowly but perceptibly rising.
e·mo·tion (-mshn) n. An intense mental state that arises subjectively rather than through conscious effort and is often accompanied by physiological changes; a strong feeling Emo is a type of music that is rapidly gaining popularity in the UK, despite being popular in America for some time now.
Chumbawamba @ Trades Club (Hebden Bridge)
Chumbawamba had worldwide fame thrust upon them as the digital age got under way the second half of the nineties.
four day Hombre @ Joseph's Well
I believe change has to be accepted as an endearing facet of life in general, thus the exciting prospect of a mob-handed entourage of cello wielding students taking the stage in Joseph's Well already appeared enough to induce a clammy palmed curiosity.
I was first introduced to Midlands three piece, The Enemy, during their hastily arranged support of Kasabian at the Refectory last year.
Charlotte Hird caught up with Simple Plan when they supported Bowling for Soup at LMUSU
Marilyn Manson @ Leeds Festival 2005
Before we delve into those cavernous vodka-marinaded archives of Leeds Festival 2005, I'll quickly make a short, sweet statement of truth.
The last few years have hardly been a triumph for Embrace; set up as "the next Oasis" their debut album reached the number one spot and, while not selling 'shed loads' ('tent loads' anyone?), did seem to set them up nicely for future records.
The Scaramanga Six @ Joseph's Well
Well blimey! I walk into Joseph's Well at about 3:20pm after standing in the pissing rain for 20 minutes outside the place (yes, you said you were opening at three!) but at least it gave me chance to sober up slightly seeing as I had been in Carpe Diem for the three previous hours and was somewhat jolly already.
It's nights like this that show what's great about the Leeds music scene. As I'm walking to the Well it pisses it down.
Dee Dyson @ Tut'n'Shive (Wakefield)
Okay. Let's get you up to speed. Tonight is the last night at the Tut N Shive, of the Wakey acoustic Thursday night shenanigans.
Seasick Steve and his guitar 'The Three Stringed Trance Wonder' have recently come off the festival circuit and preparing for a UK tour starting this month so Sam Murray rang his Norway home to find out about the man, the music and get a story or two.
Interview: International Trust
When it came to getting a Q&A with Leeds Music Scene there was only one man they could turn to - the guy that misspelt their lead singer's name and alluded to the fact that he'd like to stone their heads in...
Scuzzy indie chancers and childhood playmates of Pete Doherty, Cazals caused a few excited murmurs in the East London grotty party scene a few years back, and after being spoken about in the same sentences as The Rakes and The Paddingtons, signed, quite (un)surprisingly to the 'super-cool' and 'uber-trendy' French label Kitsune.
