Going into battle dressed in his dad's golfing outfit and some vintage aviators, Yellow Stripe Nine's ringleader Pete Bott has taken on the guardian of jerky pop/disco choruses and won hands down with catchy bastards like 'I Want More', 'Hotel X' and (the deceptively uncatchily titled) 'The Boy who Desperately Wanted to be Struck by Lightning'.
When I arrived at The Cockpit for this evening's musical extravaganza, I was struck first of all by how quiet it was.
Tiger Shadow @ Leeds Festival 2008
Tiger Shadow were a late addition to the Introducing Stage. Being such a recent arrival on the Leeds scene that this is only their third gig as a band.
Although not advertised on the initial line-up, the appearance of Morassi caught my eye at last Friday's Joseph's Well HMV Showcase gig.
Would putting rock bands in a massive hole work? With a crowd made-up of mostly of people wanting to be seen and grab the free booze, it was a triumph for the bands for so many to be grabbed from the bar by the quality of the music.
Thanks to the note at the bottom of the flyers I managed to get the bus up there this time (56/57), it's a long walk from town otherwise, but well worth it!
It is a tribute to the Leeds' live music scene, its followers and local promoters, that tonight boasts four completely different bands, completely different styles and, for yet another Lock & Load event, a top gig.
If Live & Uncut aren't an advertising sham, then they're a shambles - but let's talk more about the music.
I have to start by saying that this sort of music is not my usual cup of tea, so I was very dubious about going but finally got talked into it, as few mates of mine were going to be performing.
Vessels @ Brudenell Social Club
The Brudenell has played host to a number of extremely special shows in recent times, and tonight Vessels laid down a pretty good claim as to why this should go down as one of them. The homecoming gig of their UK tour, tonight showcased some of the very best in emerging talent from Leeds, culminating in one of the finest shows Radio One's favourite unsigned band have ever performed.
