Band Profile: Falling With Angels
post-hardcore emo
Over the years all-woman bands and rock haven't always gone well together. They've either been too poppy and flowery like the Bangles or they go over the top like L7, but almost always forgettable.

Tim Canfer grew up playing guitar; a longhaired indie-kid in the throws of the grunge era. At the age of 18 he blagged a job teaching music at an American summer camp and, while there, decided against a career in the glamorous world of electronic engineering for the drudgery of Rock 'n' Roll.

Thornton Road is the home of Bradford's finest, such as: prostitutes, pimps, pushers, car crime and above all else it's the home to the worn out ruins that we call our rehearsal rooms.
Another five-band line up at Joseph's Well marks another Northern Sound Exposure event. What makes these gigs so enjoyable from my point of view is that the organisers always try to feature new bands and it's the perfect opportunity to check out some of the potential bands of tomorrow.
Deserves To Die: Surrender All But Our Skin
Deserves To Die are one of those rare British metal bands that manage to combine all the elements needed to succeed in the genre today, whilst never sounding derivative, or, in the case of most British metal bands, a lackluster alternative to their superior American counterparts.

Fifth Goodbye were the first band of the evening's entertainment, and they had to put in a very solid performance to be able to stand up to the following bands, and a solid performance it was.
They're from Wales. And damn proud of it, it would seem. Novello come from the label 'Dragonffli' ("spelt the Welsh way") and are purveyors of catchy, sometimes dark, atmospheric rock music, but without the cheese of similar rock bands, or the pointless whinging of most emo bands, which they maybe sound quite similar too.
Although its now two or three years since nu-metal brought guitars and rock back into the mainstream, there has been a resurgence of interest lately with bands who are mixing the archetypal heavy rock sound with early nineties classic grunge influences.

Small, dingy, my first trek into the lower gig arena that is "Joe's Well". Having lived and breathed the Duchess experience over a ten-year period, I felt no-way could Leeds produce that feel to a venue again.

Band Profile: Send More Paramedics
rock metal
For some reason I always thought Pray For Hayden were a metal band. They've been about in Leeds for a while and I always see obvious student types wearing their t-shirts.
The Casanovas are an antipodean rock band, which should tell you something. Picture the big riffs (think ZZ Top), swagger vocals (Mick Jagger) and 80's rock drums.

The Meters, Conny Price, Jimmy Smith. So much brilliant instrumental Jazz Funk has passed through my ears that I find it hard to be impressed in recent times, but I was intrigued to see why a band that had only been around three years (with many line-up changes I may add) had been getting their performance at Edinburgh Fringe Festival hailed as: "highly energetic" and "powerful and absorbing." I arrived into Leeds Uni's Mine Bar to a quite unsettling atmosphere, with a tense omnipresence about the place.

Host Media Centre in Chapeltown, Leeds, is holding a Musicians Networking Day on Saturday November 18th.
Firstly, I do not hate Senses Fail. I am a big fan of their early work, their first EP and its lead track 'Steven' are fantastic slices of hook-laden pop-core, heavy enough to raise an eyebrow among metal heads, and with lyrics to suit even the most sensitive of souls.
Band Profile: Dusty Not Digital
indie experimental rock
Although sporting an impressive name, as soon as the Bonsai Kittens emerge onto the stage all hopes are lost.
The Composers: A Way Of Being Free
Apparently The Composers "thankfully don't sound much like most of the other bands in East London", thankfully indeed?

Immune take classic rock music, fuck it up, screw it over, rip it apart and give you music unlike anything you'll have ever heard.
Band Profile: Guns on the Roof
Guns on the Roof come from the wrong side of Leeds, Crossgates and Halton Moor, areas that spawned the likes of 80's punk bands Abrasive Wheels, Icon AD, Urban Zones and more recently Dead Pets.
It's wrong to compare, but what first attracted me to this band was a rock rush, the crash of a song, in an unashamedly indie way.

Shed Seven - The Charlatans - Flowered Up - The Verve - aah, halcyon days indeed. These bands are almost certainly amongst the record collection of openers Silvertin and their facsimiles of the aforementioned bands in their songs are pretty spot on, if a little watered down.
Saturday night and four bands take to the stage at Leeds' Premier pub/venue location, The Duchess. First up are the duo of Andy Parrott & Rob Karl, who unfortunately I missed.
Band Profile: Bedroom Gymnastics
Punk/indie band based in Bradford.
Monday night and we visit the Duchess for a female-dominated night in front of a dissapointingly small crowd.
Bands hyped up without an album, but solely because they are new, have four average songs on MySpace and a novelty name, seem to be the way music is going.
Underoath: Define the Great Line
It's hard to know where some bands' safety zones start and end. The balance between not pushing hard enough and regurgitating the same old tired lines versus trying too many different things and attempting one giant leap for musickind, is a hard one to define.
Larrikin Love are really doing rather well right now - their single Downing Street Kindling has just been released and not an issue of NME seems to go by without some mention of them.
For someone who's not really a ska fan, I definitely enjoyed this show. No matter what your tastes are, sometimes you just need something that makes you jump.

Pop Threat: Amarantal Meltdown
Pop Threat's 4-track EP release on Mook Records begins with an eerie twist of distorted, effects driven guitars coupled with vocals by Caroline, creating a total wall of sound, perhaps an up-to-date Sonic Youth with an almost-melody shining through.
Various Artists: Bilge Pump / Pifco - split single
Now this is going to be a noise fest. With these bands you just know it - two of the nastiest, brashest, craziest acts in the city.
The very last Blue Star Music gig happens with possibly one of the busiest crowds, best bands and best mix of indie rock from the straight up young upstarts (Solo and Diawara) to the wit, charm and brilliance of the experienced Mama Scuba and Being 747.
This is a good CD. I'm told nothing about the band before I slot the disc in my machine, just a pretty piss poor name and a green CD/r.
Guns on the Roof released their new EP, 'Last Orders', on Monday, June 16th. Victoria Holdsworth caught up with the band to ask them about the album, punk rock and music in general.
