Pre-gig opinions on The Somatics suggested they are a classic example of 'an acquired taste', and with a small, but loyal following in Joseph's Well on Thursday night you couldn't help but think that The Somatics will forever retain their cult, underground status despite signing to a significant indie label in Beggars Banquet.
After standing in possibly the longest box office queue to get the tickets that Ticketmaster never sent, by the time we got into the new Leeds Academy (Carpet?

"like Sevendust battling it out with deftones and Metallica" - The Machine
If theatre was the chosen style then Loqui came right out and did it properly. Their cast of oddballs was choreographed around Rob Chapman (trombone, vocals and ego) and their music swirled, raced and bewitched.
As darkness falls all around the Headrow in Leeds City centre, most of the people on the streets are setting off to the trendy wine bars, the oversized clubs and most are incapable of stringing two words together.

This month, soulful dance/rock act Kava Kava became probably one of the very few UK bands yet to tour China!
Unfortunately I missed the opening band but arrived just in time for Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. This band is a six piece playing a kind of punked-up Faces/Stones rock'n'roll with no less than three gutarists (for some reason).
From Chambers Dictionary we have the following: 'Polytechnic - adj. of many arts or technical subjects; n.
Band Profile: The Pigeon Detectives
rock indie
On a warm evening in Leeds a band could be heard playing. Scouting For Girls are playing at the Cockpit with support from the newly formed Leeds band The Faraways.
These are rather depressing times in this country - as if the fact that no-one dares put their money within 50 miles of a bank account and that Norwich's county town may soon be Atlantis isn't bad enough, there's been barely the thinnest of smatterings of sunshine to brighten us up.
Mr Hudson And The Library @ Cockpit
I arrive late, but in time to catch the headline act's full set. The turnout is much better than I expected, the main room is full.
Arrived at the Well to find most people milling around outside trying to keep cool - so I missed most of the Casual Terraces set - sorry guys (however, I have seen them before and a fine band they are too).
This was the first ever headline show from Santa Barbara's pop-punk favourites The Ataris and judging by the fan's reaction in the near capacity venue, I'm sure many more will follow.

Jim's Super Stereo World @ Joseph's Well
Much pop history has come and gone since Jimbob and Fruitbat decided, in the mid-nineties, that they just weren't having fun anymore and disbanded Carter the Unstoppable Sex Machine.
Geordie Nic Armstrong is old before his time, but thank the mighty Nashville Lord because his delta-swamp, blues-rock is the perfect antidote to the ageing process.
Sunday night in March at Joseph's Well and we're here to witness Fungus' latest tour, as they bring us their latest tongue-in-cheek, have-a-go single "A Fanclub Would Be Nice" and a genuine attempt to rock the venue ...

Leeds Festival 2007 to debut 'The Alternative Stage'
With over 150 bands already set to appear at the Carling Weekend: Leeds Festival 2007, organisers have today announced the debut of a new stage.
It's a familiar story. All too familiar for my liking: young band comes all the way to Leeds from afar (Lincoln in this case) with the promise of a headline slot at a decent venue.

Come with me on a little journey in time all the way back to late 2001 when this reviewer was reluctantly in Heaven and Hell with some pissed-up pals.
Just like the Klaxons themselves, lets make this as short and as sweet as possible. Klaxons are the best new band in the UK right now.
Misled Vision have come a long way since the last time I saw them, when they were a good band but were too inexperienced as musicians and as a band to make any real impact, but the fact that they played the Cockpit today shows how far they have come.
The third night of the FutureSound 2000 competition sees the first noise-fest night, a completely raucous mental affair - in a controlled manner of course.
Indicator @ Railway Pub (Rodley)
This was always going to be a special gig for Indicator because not only is it their first ever headline show, its also the first gig since the release of the "Critical Resistance EP" and as a group of slightly pissed up punks gather in the pool room turned rock club of "the Railway" it's impossible to ignore the great sense of expectation in the air.
First up at Tuesday's Elustrious night were Leeds skank-meisters UNIT - a seven-piece whose horn enhanced take on dub was straight from the lo-fi, speaker-shuddering rulebook of 60s and 70s Jamaican studio supremo King Tubby.
A much-billed single launch beckoned tonight at the Fenton with a joint headline of les Flames! and The Scaramanga Six.
With dust sheets over unwanted amplifiers and drums, disguising the suggestion of a headline band, audible footsteps cut through the polite chatter and enter the attic, disturbing the motes in the air.
Band Profile: Girls Can't Dance
indie rock post-punk
Considering there wasn't a lot of promotion for the showcase this evening at Leeds Mine this was one hell of a night.
After spending Saturday watching sport, namely Leeds Utd beating Liverpool, then spending the early evening at Joseph's Well, where the glamorous (or is it sexy?) Albeit were set to headline yet again, I ventured down to The Rocket.
Ambient, alternative music is on the cards tonight in the ridiculous upstairs room of the Atrium. Peasman, aka.
Last Letter @ Stinky's Peephouse
Having frequented Stinky's Peep House a couple of occasions before for a number of house/drum and bass nights, I must admit the venue did not register as the most obvious place where you would expect to find a rock gig on a Thursday night.
The Motorettes @ Joseph's Well
Contending with a sold-out Cockpit playing host to local favourites The Pigeon Detectives, Joseph's Well has done well to find itself a decent crowd tonight.
It is a tribute to the Leeds' live music scene, its followers and local promoters, that tonight boasts four completely different bands, completely different styles and, for yet another Lock & Load event, a top gig.
James William Hindle's story reads like a classic rags to... er... slightly nicer rags tale. Originally from Leeds, things started to pick up after sending a cover of a John Denver tune to an American record label putting together a Denver tribute album.
Nightmare Of You @ Joseph's Well
Nightmare Of You are going to be so huge it doesn't bear thinking about. If mine and literally anyone else who's thus far come into contact with Long Islands Nightmare Of You predictions are correct tonight will have been one very special and significant show indeed.
Fifth Goodbye were the first band of the evening's entertainment, and they had to put in a very solid performance to be able to stand up to the following bands, and a solid performance it was.
This was my first Tea Time Shuffle for some time, and I was excited to be down reviewing a band I actually discovered through LMS - Plastic Fuzz.
I love gigs like this. You go down to some random (admittedly, in the case of the Faversham, glorified) pub on the outskirts of the city to see a band or two that you've never heard of and to be brutally honest, probably never will again.
For a band about to release their second single to be playing a headline set at the Leeds Met is no small feat.
The Diawara frontman looks in his element as he energetically takes it upon himself to cover every square inch of the stage before the night is up.
Do you ever find yourself boasting to chums about the time you saw some bloated stadium-fillers back in the day when they were bottom of the bill at Joseph's Well?
The Sunshine Underground @ Cockpit
So is this the beginning of the big time? You chat with some fool on the CDUK sofas. You are spotted on the high street in The Sun's Bizarre column.

Curtis Eller's American Circus: 1890
Weird is good. Wonderful is better. Weird and wonderful cannot be beaten with anything. This here artefact, electronically emitting noise like a raree-show demon from the audio equipment to my right is Curtis Eller's first CD album, recorded by himself in league with his very own and very mighty American Circus.
The Mixing Tin is renowned for its vibrant atmosphere, especially late into a weekend night and tonight, the Noisebox showcase featuring four of the hottest bands around, is no exception.
Ah, how I love Mine with its alluring red leather sofas and twizzly stools. I've only settled in twenty minutes before the dashing Lucky Jim claims the stage as his own playing songs which tell of experiences deeper than we unsuspecting punters could ever imagine and to which said venue doesn't do justice.
Goldie Lookin' Chain @ Leeds Festival 2004
"That's my run", said Hugh Grant in Mickey Blue Eyes as explanation of his endearing, but unusual running technique - "I thought you were doing a funny run".
Whiskas caught up with Jarcrew on their tour with Million Dead ...
"A great name, it's a great name. They must be great." That was the logic that I mustered up as I walked through the Cockpit doors.
Drive-Thru Records have pretty much ruled the roost over the past few years in terms of launching and marketing successful pop-punk / post-emo acts: Finch, New Found Glory and Something Corporate to name but a few.
The New Roscoe on a wet Wednesday night was a new experience for me. This was my first gig there and having never been in I was unsure what to expect but as a live music venue I was pleasantly surprised.
indie rock
Bank Holiday Monday and "Lock & Load" bring us four local bands to play the Rocket Venue, fast becoming the best middle sized venue in Leeds, following the closure of the Duchess in March.
Great my car is playing up, just in time for a drive to Leeds! I finally arrive at the Well to catch the last half of Shallowend's set.
What a day to pick as your headline slot at the Vine... 9-11 was host to some damn fine rock action tonight, and not the sort that usually has me in a spin...
Tom Gourley @ Royal Park Cellars
A very full and very buzzing Royal Park Cellars had one hell of a night on Wednesday. Agent provocateur Thomas R.
Victoria Holdsworth talks to The Glitterati as they make a welcome return to their hometown.
Considering the torrential rain wiping out anything on the streets across Leeds, the Well was surprisingly full.
I arrived at The Vine late to see there was a change to the original line-up for the night. Wakefield three-piece Soberskin had conceded their slot third on the bill to open the night.
As readers will see from the by-line at the bottom, we are breaking our rule of not reviewing our own gigs.
An evening of contrasts at the New Roscoe was enjoyed by a pleasantly sizable crowd - given that it was a Wednesday night and clashed with the nation's prima donnas kicking a bag of wind with scant success - proof, if proof be need be, that live music at grass roots level is alive and kicking.
MALIBU STACEY This is what I need. I've been at work all day, now I'm out with my ex- girlfriend having been stood up by all the people I was supposed to meet, and here are the first band of the night, the un-heard of Malibu Stacey.
Andy Roberts gives les Flames! a grilling...
Upon arriving at the pub, I purchased the usual pint of wife-beater and made my way down stairs. Sitting down in the rather empty basement room I was surprised that the first band was not already on.
It's Friday night and I think I might go out, have a few beers, and watch some bands I've never heard of.
Uiscedwr @ Commercial (Cleckheaton)
There aren't many indications Cleckheaton is the place to be. Five minutes from Leeds on the westbound M62, the town sits unsignposted beside junction 26, where the distant Bronte zone and none-too-close Salt's Mill are announced.
A Hawk And A Hacksaw @ Holy Trinity Church
Contemporary Music Network tours are usually pretty special. But this was extra special. This was my first time in the Holy Trinity Church, and whilst the architecture hardly resembles that of the York Minster or Barcelona's Sagrada Familia, I don't think there are any live venues in Leeds which can match this type of setting.
Doubts over Alan McGee's sanity have become commonplace since his surrender of the once-great Creation Records to the likes of Mishka, Kevin Rowlands and the money men at Sony.
The Strokes @ Leeds Festival 2002
Firstly let me state the thing this weekend confirmed for me, above all others, that people at festivals so often have such varied opinions about the bands they saw.
Instant Species: Robert The Bruces Spider
First, a little story... It was at The Junction in York 2003 when I felt truly rock and roll for the first time.
So here we have an "unsigned band showcase". Call me bitter, and even counter productive in the encouragement of fledgling bands but I hate these things.
The Paddingtons @ Joseph's Well
Matt Knee is the smiliest drummer I have ever had the pleasure to watch! It made my night to see someone up there who was clearly enjoying every moment and who was not too ashamed to show his excitement.
Now this was a weird experience for me. My knowledge of Ska/Punk essentially stops at dub and gets about as animated as a stoned lemur, but I had heard the MR SHIRAZ CD, "Off The Tongue", so at least knew I wouldn't be sitting down much through the evening.
James Burkitt caught up with Gracie (vocals) and Mafro (guitar) of The Antix at The Elbow Room in Leeds
With the 'forgotton' album scheduled for release soon, its about time that this interview found its way into press...
I've always thought band names are important. They can say a lot about the band itself, or its music: like New Order, Spiritualized or Fear Factory.
The Lodger @ Brudenell Social Club
The Bone is 1 year old today. No longer sucking at the mother's teat of gig promotion, it's now old enough and daft enough to stand on its own 2 feet.
In the busy world of the Leeds Music Scene, there's always a few bands who slip quietly into the main arena. iLiKETRAiNS are one of these bands, playing their sometimes gentle, sometimes fierce, but always beautiful take on post rock theatrics.
Your correspondent is tired and weary, drowning in a sea of hipsters, trying not to booze due to previous late messy night après gig and "advancing years".
To be honest I had never heard of the first two bands that were on the bill this evening, so I went into this completely blind but very open to the prospect of hearing something new and fresh to my ears.
Pretty Girls Make Graves @ Joseph's Well
This a belated review, for the simple fact I have been away in Edinburgh, breathing in clean Lothian air and sampling many types of whiskey since Tuesday, and amidst my general binging found no time to write the piece coherently.
Interview: Charlotte Hatherley
Kate Zezulka meets up with Charlotte Hatherley to counteract the Spice Girls' comeback by spreading a little real girl power...
The Sunshine Underground @ LMUSU
Fans were gathering and touts were waiting even before the doors opened at 7 tonight. For this was to be the triumphant homecoming and tour finale of local (kinda) hero's The Sunshine Underground.
Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies @ The Vine
Whiskas - Transmission promoter and tonight's doorman - is stressed. The doors are open, thirty punters are milling around already and The Black Helicopters are still sound checking.
The Scaramanga Six @ Leeds Festival 2007
Hadouken! - Radio 1 Stage A heaving tent full of sweat and dubious amounts of day-glow welcomes semi-home-towners Hadouken!.
Wildhearts @ Scarborough Castle
So this is what I missed Leeds Festival for then. Catching the train out to the coast first thing on a Saturday morning (well, halfway to the coast - due to trouble on the line I end up getting a bus from York) to see the last ever gig by both Wildhearts and Terrorvision, today has the omens of being a good day.
On a cold, wet and dark Tuesday night Gavin Miller talks with Ross Futureheads from the highly showbiz and rock and roll location of a Leeds Travel Lodge...
Whirlwind Heat talk about Detroit, Jack White and monkeys and explain why everything is random...
Andy Roberts talks to Brody ahead of their end of year festivities at the Royal Park...
MMMMBZZZZ goes the clock and I'm buzzing for pound a pint. I'm sat there, as per every pissing Friday afternoon, shooting the shit with Tommy B.
The greatest festival of nu-wave this side of anywhere, Nastyfest continues to be the crown jewel in the Faversham's sizeable repertoire.
I have to say I was pleased that this event was taking place, my 82-year-old gran had a full right mastectomy to fight breast cancer only 3 years ago, and I have lost an Aunt to cancer.
Red Stars Parade: a refreshingly piquant slice dropped into Leeds' musical soft drink
It all sits a bit on knife-edge this one; I can't be the only one that feels it. The sweet, sweet taste of anticipation impregnates ever fibre of my body and, in empathy with a dog on heat, I pace round the Refec like a chained beast.
The scheme brewing in the collective mind of ¡Forward, Russia!, Leeds' pioneers of screeching, mercurial noise, is a simple one. It goes like this...
