uk spring

The CD from Spring was quite a mixed bag because there were 10 tracks on here. The 1st track, "Not At The Same Time", was a blast from the past because at the start I half expected Mick Jagger to come out dancing!
Spring have a smooth rock style that has not been much heard in the last twenty five years. Punk - first from America and then in its nastier English variant made it as good as compulsory to throw some tasty venom into each and every musical cake you could bake.

After touring the UK as practically unknown indie signings, Doncaster trio The Wallbirds have become one of the most exciting unsigned bands for 2008; their bluesy Dylan-esque aggression with grass roots approach to modern pop song writing likening them to The Libertines or White Stripes, with a classic rock 'n' roll sense of emergency.

Polytechnic: Won't You Come Around?
With their permanent bed head and adorned in cardigans, Polytechnic are an Indie wimp's wet dream. Having previously witnessed a particularly lacklustre live performance that had about as much energy as one of the losing toy bunnies from the Duracell advert, hopes for this single were decidedly low.

Band Profile: A Day Well Spent
A lot has happened to A Day Well Spent since their formation in early 2006. Lineup changes, non-stop writing, and everything that comes with being part of a professional band, has shaped the groups own style and the music they create; which is reflected by its originality, maturity and the need to be different.
"Give Me Rain" is Star Bodixa's debut offering since their 2001 signing to indie label Energy Records and is taken from the forthcoming album "And They Danced On Glass".
Glasgow three-piece 1990s release 'See you at the lights', their first single off their up and coming album 'Cookies', and it doesn't disappoint.
Butch Cassidy Soundsystem: Butches Brew
Glasgow is so the new Kingston. Possibly. Glaswegian label Soma gives us Michael Hunter, AKA Butch Cassidy, who brings the sounds of the smokey sun all the way from the Windies to the Western Isles.
The Nervous Shakedown: Untitled
"Heavy Grooves & Fucked Up Blues" proudly proclaims the scrawled biog and ain't that the truth boy! Musically like taking a corner at full whack on a Speedway track, spitting mud over the crowd.
Ask some people to name a rock "super group" and their response will usually be Audioslave unless you ask you're grandma who'll probably just look at you funny.
Five O'Clock Heroes: Speak Your Language
'Speak Your Language' by Five O'Clock Heroes kicks off in the best possible form with the ear-Prozac of 'Judas.' This song will make you instantly fall in love with frontman's Antony Ellis' addictively angular voice and the band's talent for mixing awkward indie with just the right amount of pop, to create something that's original, but accessible.
'In a Cave' is taken from Tokyo Police Club's debut album 'Elephant Shelf,' and if this track is anything to go by then the current chart-bothering indie giants had better watch out.
Band Profile: Japanese Fighting Fish
Japanese Fighting Fish: 3 fisherman sold their trawler bought new gear and made a band. It all began back in the winter months of 07/08, Paulito and Stevo made the decision to try and pull karlost from his inevitable demise living on the mean streets of LS6.

Home produced and bearing all the hall marks of it Blah Blah Tin are not here to trouble the charts, but instead to do exactly as they please with a drum machine, synth, dirty guitar and big collection of records by The Fall.
The Kinison: You'll Never Guess Who Died
We're only a couple of weeks into the New Year and already the influx of poor quality, tight t-shirt wearing, American emo fuckwits has begun.
Despite sitting down to listen to this demo with something approaching a hangover, my sluggish mind cannot be fooled into thinking it is rubbish.

rock metal
indie rock
It's happening, I can feel it in my waters, bubbling beneath the surface, a new genre will infest the radios, TVs and magazines of the UK in the year two 00 five, led by Franz Ferdinand, Razorlight and The Killers, this is the bastard offshoot of what came of The Strokes inspired NY explosion at the turn of the century, ladies and gentlemen feel free to dance again because indie dance rock is back and it's catching like a fire in a hay factory.
Royal Vendetta: The Lost Cause
Wearing their influences firmly on their sleeve, or more like in a big day-glow t-shirt that says "our influences are:" Royal Vendetta are Leeds' answer to Kasabian, The Cooper Temple Clause and The Music...
This three piece instrumental, instrument swapping band was formed in Spring 2005. Drummer, Neil Turpin, also mans the kit for Bilge Pump and Polaris and has done a stint in HiM alongside Doug Scharin.
The Stations: This Globe Can Be Upgraded
With catchy songs, bold lyrics and raw vocals The Stations' second EP stands firmly in the category of "New-wave Indie", (as opposed to "Shoegazeing", 90s-style Indie).
Band Profile: Waking the Witch
acoustic
The Whippets: You'll Be Fine EP
I'm not really a lover of filling reviews with press release fodder, but this is fucking excellent: "The Whippets sound like a dip in a plunge pool, followed by a particularly tricky numbers round of Countdown, standing on your head and then finding a tenner you didn't know you had and spending it all on Pic n'Mix." Right dissection fans, let's go...
There's some really good talent here: in the playing, the singing and the songwriting. As Kingsley Amis said about some other very pleasing things, 'I'm clear on why I like them, thanks; but why do I like them so much?' The answer has to be a subtle intensity in Wilful Missing's often fragile-sounding songs written and sung by Sam Kipling, with a range of well-controlled instruments in the hands of guitarist Sam Lawrence and bass player Albert Freeman.

Ladyfest Leeds is so much better than romance!
Usually, February is rubbish. You fail your resolutions, you stop going to the expensive gym you joined, you stop ringing elderly relatives and they cut you out of your will.
Two things immediately spring out on the three-track demo CD from four-piece "atmospheric rockers" Lunar Camels.
Barnsley trio Mynas offer up three tracks of melodic, easy-on-the-ears indie with just enough undemanding hooks to make for enjoyable listening.
Herman Dune @ Brudenell Social Club
Championed favourably by the late John Peel, Herman Dune are a band brimming with mystery. To this day I'm still not 100% certain of their exact origin.
Violet, Indigo, Blue: Green, Yellow, Orange, Red. The colours of a rainbow when you stand on your head.
punk garage rock
Malcolm Middleton @ City Varieties
Malcolm Middleton cuts a strange figure onstage at the Leeds City Varieties. His is a personality that would instantly spring to mind if someone were to ask for an example of unease or embarrassment, and that's an impression made even clearer by the faded grandeur of the venue.
If you love taut song writing, spring loaded guitar playing and adult emotions, go buy "The way I See It".
After the sun goes down on a rare glorious spring day in Leeds, Idlewild are creating havoc among the crowd gathered in Leeds Met Uni S.
After an interminable wait, a severely depleted Melaton grace the stage. The lead singer informs us that traffic made them late and half the band are still stuck in it, so they will attempt a shortened set with him and the bass player.
alternative rock emo
I could tell it was going to be a good night, when a old guy who looked a little worse for wear, started to dance in a ballroom dance fashion to the music before the first band came on.

Paul Hartnoll: Patchwork Guilt
For the uninitiated amongst you, Paul Hartnoll was one half of the omnipotent Orbital, and dominated the early 90's world of (popular) techno/electronica alongside his brother Phil.
James William Hindle's story reads like a classic rags to... er... slightly nicer rags tale. Originally from Leeds, things started to pick up after sending a cover of a John Denver tune to an American record label putting together a Denver tribute album.
Funkal Infection @ Highwood Hotel
A night of much in the way of atmosphere and possibly even musical talent and ability was delivered this weekend at the Highwood.
It's a Friday night at the Vine, it's 8 O'clock, Duels are about to start so where the hell is everybody?
Well, this is a pleasant record. Kind of pleasant in the Gary Lineker sense of the word. You know where you are with it.
Visa @ Woodkirk Valley Country Club
Free pizza anyone? Not only do you get a bright and diverse 40 minute set from this Leeds based outfit, but you also bag yourself some unwanted pizza, compliments of the management (that is if you get there early enough.
indie rock
York, eh? Lovely place, full of historical importance and quaint old streets full of olde shoppes. As for music though, it's probably not the first place you'd look for talent.
Sounding like a hybrid of The La's accompanied by Beach Boys-esque style vocals The Restaurant open a mixed evening at the Vine in terms of style and quality.
"What is love except a way to lose a friend? What is life except a means to an end? What are you except a reason for me to show a little hope?" Okay, okay, so I'm an over-emotional little soul; therefore, I will automatically take under my wing any waif-like 'singer-songwriter' (there are those heinous words again) with a tear stirring behind their eye and a pitiful rip in their denims, no matter if they're good, middling, or, quite frankly, rubbish, out-of-tune whine-bags.
Queen Adreena: The Butcher And The Butterfly
Hate to sound so abrupt, but Katie Jane-Garside is weird. Is it that I personally don't understand her twisted world of sickly intense lyrics?
four day Hombre @ Fibbers (York)
Fibbers of York is a great venue that has started to attract some great bands. Tonight was no exception.
Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences: We Are Not Other People
'Unexpected Error' makes no effort to ease the listener into the weird and wonderful world of Paul Hawkins & Thee Awkward Silences, as it opens with a blaring, Atari-esque sound effect that'll make you wonder whether this is, in fact, a comedy album.
For any regulars on the Leeds music scene, the Cellars has always and will always hold a very special fondness in our hearts.
Jackie Leven / Michael Weston King @ New Roscoe
"I took a train out of Leeds in the pouring rain..." Jackie Leven From the onset this was going to be pretty intense; The Black Heart Procession rolls out of the PA and, with nowhere to go, laps around my ankles.
Veil Cassini's debut EP proves that the Devon quartet have a hundred and one ideas when it comes to music, and for some reason they try to cram every last one of them into two songs, 'Silhouette' and 'Box & Cox.' Take almost any part of these musical mazes and you'll find enough off-kilter ideas to kit out five more songs.
Various Artists: The Spills / Piskie Sits - split single
'Ghost of The Day' gets off to a shaky start, with front man Slater slurring his vocals over the sound of a single chord being plucked over and over again.
It's another night down at the Well and tonight we're in the presence of some nice ol' dirty rock. The night kicks off with Tricky Nixon.
In a music scene as wide and varied as Leeds is at the moment, you're bound to get the odd one or two who just seem so captivating, so unique and so... "where the fuck did this guy come from?"
Yet another top night at Josephs' Well, to see two bands, or should I say acts because the first is a solo guy with but an acoustic guitar to his name, which is incidentally TOM GOURLEY.
Joan As Police Woman: To Survive
Superbly serene yet gregariously graceful, the second album from Joan Wasser and Co. is a magnificent exercise in chamber-pop intricacy.
How do you go about describing a man who has had so many superlatives thrown his way already. With plaudits expressed such as amazing, utterly brilliant and a genius talent countless times already then you can already grasp what talent we are dealing with.
Christ this was a tough call. Kasabian, Spring and The Paddingtons all playing the same evening. Despite having high expectations of the Bears, (sorry!
The upstairs room at the Cardigan Arms is a perfect place for an acoustic gig. With its small, dark room, the atmosphere is made even better by the dozen or so candles that are situated around the room, creating a very intimate feel to the whole place.
Last Temple Orchestra: Untitled
The debut EP from Leeds' Last Temple Orchestra begins in promising fashion, with the excellent 'Inside.' Its spring-heeled drums are tempered by echoey chords, giving it an interestingly ethereal edge.
God love Alkaline Trio, the unflappable red and black macabre attack are one of those one-of-a-kind bands that unassailably distinguish themselves from the pack and become a staple ingredient of your listening diet with inherent ease.
Various Artists: This Is The New (art/goes/pop sampler)
I love art/goes/pop: they found me when they went looking and proceed to send me top quality compact discs like this little gem which compiles some of their glorious little upstarts onto one disc.
Pifco are one of those bands you're either going to love or hate. The first potential deal-breaker is frontman Ste's habit of barking incoherently rather than singing, which will leave a good many people scratching their heads before switching 'Pifco A Go Go' off.
Highlights of 2006: 12 months in the life of the Leeds music scene
Well, what a year! As we near 2007, we've been having a look back at what was hitting the news in the Leeds music scene in 2006.
Carpe on a Saturday night: I'm a fan of the stone floor and the wood surround, so, of course, once I'm ensconced at the bar with a glass of orange juice and a curly straw I'm happy enough.
By all rights Shatner really ought to be extinct. Given that the Big Brothers who quietly go about the business of corrupting the nation's youth decided to adopt the policies of Pol Pot somewhere around the late 90s, someone ought to have got round to sending Jim Bower & co to the glue factory by now.
I Hate Kate: Embrace The Curse
Contrary to its gothic title, album-opener 'Bed of Black Roses' is a giddy blend of breakneck punk riffs and fizzy electro beats that sets the tone for I Hate Kate's début album 'Embrace The Curse.' Frontman Justin Mauriello, former vocalist of Zebrahead, has the perfect voice for this brand of helter-skelter pop-punk, his strident-edged vocals cutting clearly over even 'Bed of Black Roses' raucous punk chorus.
Adem is currently touring his second solo album "Love and Other Planets" and we caught up with him at the West Yorkshire Playhouse where he was playing a headline slot as part of the Fuse Festival.
Victoria Holdsworth talks to Editors prior to their visit to Leeds to headline Millennium Square on Friday 19th May
Even if he is unable to attend - by dint of incarceration, far-flung vacation or other indisposition - the embedded chronological awareness of any Leeds gig-goer will tell him at this juncture (6pm on the first Friday of the month) that he should be nestling within the subterranean catacombs of the Hi-Fi Club.
The Hold Steady arrive in the UK next month for their first full UK tour. Danielle Millea caught up with guitarist Tad Kubler.
Fall Out Boy @ Millennium Square
In the absence of an arena (or anything bigger than the Uni's Refectory in actuality) it seems Millennium Square has stepped up to the plate to become the pinnacle of Leeds' gigging venue possibilities.
Interview: The Rosie Taylor Project
After the recent release of one of this year's sweetest singles 'Black & White Films', The Rosie Taylor Project caught up with Leeds Music Scene to discuss the past, the future, and the city of Leeds.
