Desert Monkey: Made Great By A Breeze

Starting off with the title track sounding like a rougher Kyuss with furious bluesy guitar riffage and fat drums, Desert Monkey are looking like quite the heads down, balls to the wall rock band.

Band Profile: Revolution

Simon - guitar, piano and vocals Adam - lead guitar Chris - bass Dave - drums Well except for colplday and the music, and of course blazin squad, the british music scene is a shambles, where here to rock it back into shape with a mixture of melodic tunes, uplifting ballads, screaming instrementals and a lead guitarist who enjoys lying on the floor at sponge.

Band Profile: Grace

acoustic rock

Naked Lounge: Crimson

Ska tinged rock without the horn sections, verging into metal at times with growling vocals and guitars to match.

Designated Driver: Design At Edd River

Middlesex's Designated Driver do what a lot of modern Emo frat-party nu-punk rockers don't - they actually write songs that feel like they mean it rather than purely sounding good when you've got a skinful.

Helica: Untitled

Helica's demo is quite impressive. Soft guitars, rock songs with melodies, subtle drums and a gorgeous female voice.

Band Profile: Kliq

Paul Street - Vocals Stephen Shield - Guitar Jamie Mosley - Guitar Chris Purdy - Bass / Backing Vocals Andrew Dykes - Drums / Backing Vocals Hey there music lovers, we are a new band on the scene in Leeds.

Decoration: The Thomas Pink Session

A busy yuletide schedule forced this review into 2004 and subsequently stopped it being my unsigned CD of 2003 and yet although I am sure to receive many more CDs from eager young artists in the coming months, I am unlikely to receive many that better this!

Band Profile: Medicine For The Meek

Medicine For The Meek formed in early 2007 when singer songwriter Shara Meek collaborated with some of Leeds Finest musicians.

Pop Threat: Filth

Great, the new 7" single from Pop Threat shows a rawer sound, one that I've not heard from the Leeds four-piece since their self-titled EP on Mook two years ago.

Band Profile: Padfoot

original folk-music with a DiY twist

Jon Gomm @ New Roscoe

This is the second time I have seen Gallo and I like them more every time. The female duo have a lot of talent between them and use guitar and saxophone to produce some lovely funky, jazzy, blusey medleys, topped off with an angelic, but strong voice that you have to notice.

Band Profile: DB4

rock pop blues

The Outlines: Love EP

This is a big-hearted CD with two very good songs. The sound is full, the tunes are strong and Matt Worall has a voice on him that draws all the attention.

Band Profile: The Pattern Theory

The Pattern Theory was formed in 2006 by Carl Carlson (Guitar), Lukas Creswell-Rost (Guitar), James Yates (Drums) and Danny Laycock (Bass).

Lisa Brown: What's That Sound

Lisa Brown are a bit of a surprise. With that name you expect a solo female acoustic guitar type thing going off but it's nothing of the sort.

future sons of rome: Paroxysm

The first and best thing you notice about fsor is the passion they have for the tunes they're playing.

Band Profile: Daigoro

Music people can get their stomp on to!

Four Planes in Four Days: s/t

The Four Planes... staple diet is chilled, laidback post-rock. Laid bare and unobtrusive at times, luxurious with rich guitar edginess at others, always alleviating and utterly brilliant.

Paul Weller: Leafy Mysteries

A strange record this. There's a sort of lilting rural tune to it, but some almost clumsy chord changes going on underneath and an over-hit acoustic guitar (what is with big stars making expensive Gibsons sound like Yamaha beginner guitars?).

Band Profile: Grimper

Gus - Guitar, Vocals, Keyboards, Bass Bob - Guitar, Vocals Nan - Bass, Vocals, Flute Jay - Keyboards, Vocals Sam - Drums, Vocals Like the West Yorkshire Monkees.

Band Profile: 45 Revolutions

Tract: Destroy Reality TV

Hey dismals, cheer up. It's Tract to the rescue. They refuse to enjoy dross, shit or reality TV. They make a lovely fresh noise with bass, guitar, drums and two fine voices.

The Fuss: Music Is Life EP

"Lonely" imbeds itself in my head immediately. Unfortunately it's because it has the worst guitar lick ever.

Zealous: Dust

Vocalist/guitarist Dan Pearce, bass player Pete Green and drummer Chris Smith are throwing their hearts into Zealous.

Band Profile: The Smokestacks

The Smokestacks are... Will: vocals / lead guitar Joel: vocals / rhythm guitar Owen: bass Ben: keyboards Tom: drums / vocals Formed in 2003 in the Level 5 Burns Ward of Leeds General Infirmary, after being struck by rock lightning, The Smokestacks have been perfecting their sound around various Leeds venues ever since.

The Music Roll Exchange: Untitled

The Music Roll Exchange (North London with Huddersfield connections) have their chief blurb-writer primed to start abbreviating the name (they shall be known as TMRE) before anybody has heard of their carefully chosen long name.

Fifth Goodbye: This Is My Impression EP

Sadly, I cannot remember back to my experimentation with guitar playing so the name of the guitar effects used to open Bandstand escapes me, so for my lack of technical knowledge I do apologise.

The Music: You Might As Well Try To Fuck Me EP

"You Might As Well Try To Fuck Me" is the debut release from Leeds' The Music on the Hut label, and, put bluntly, is a blinding tune.

Band Profile: Libero

Libero are a four piece hailing from the small hamlet of Wakefield comprising of Matt Yates on vocals and guitar, Dan Yates on lead guitar, Tracey Fox on bass and Ian Cawthorne on drums.

Justin Evans: My Revolution

As imaginative as the title is, this most solo of solo projects (being entirely composed and played by Mr Evans) is a rather drab collection of naively written and flatly performed demos.

Band Profile: Johnny Poindexter

Johnny Poindexter's music was often described as bleak, bold, beautiful, and anything inbetween. Safe to say, you wouldn't find it down the disco.

Pioneers: Falling

Keeping in tune with the current fascination of resurrecting Britpop, Pioneers arrive with their brand on melodic pop songs, centred around jangly guitars, blistering vocals and fuzzy organ.

Electric Mud Generator: Souls of Infinity

Appropriately with a name containing the word "mud" this is a dirty throaty blues rock stab from the Leeds outfit.

Band Profile: Die Emergency

Powerful, angular, mid paced post-hardcore 90's style.

Tremulous Monk: Sparkle Like Your Shoes

The monk in question is York boy Chris Wilkinson. After building his own studio in his hometown he set about recording several EPs which lead to the release of this album.

Bifta Smoking Eskimos: The Columbian Cold EP

We now have a scoop the NME would love to get their hands on, Richard Ashcroft formerly of The Verve and currently enjoying a bafflingly successful solo career has sneaked over to Huddersfield and recorded an EP in secret, working under the name Bifta Smoking Eskimos.

Milf: Nothing At All EP

Milf are a three-piece Bradford band and have been plying their trade for over 4 years now, since they were 14, and bring us a truly fantastic four-track EP.

Band Profile: Allegro Fall

John Paley - Vocals / Bass Mike Paley - Drums Rob Triffett - Guitar Will Grinder - Guitar We originally formed in October 2005 and recorded our first demo in May 2006.

Band Profile: Nil Carborundum

Leeds-based misanthropic death/black metal

The Palms: Untitled

The Palms really fit the modern day bill with their take on the current Indie rock / dance scene ala Kasabian, but one or too vocal production issues and an occasional penchant for misguided fret-wanking hold them back from hitting the full throttle.

Cheer Up Mungo Hump and the Daddy Special: Untitled

'Sonic instigator' opens this CD with an infectious guitar riff, funky bassline and a vocalist that can actually sing.

The Calvo Contract: Untitled

This 3 song debut from York students The Calvo Contract is "grunge-metal"... so that'll be rock then.

les Flames!: Mutley, 1, From Essex

"We've got the rock, we've got the roll, we've got the sounds to get you excited, we've got the rock, we've got the roll, come on let's go!" sing the les Flames!

Beeker: Summer Fruit

This CD looks pretty enough, with a visual clash of romantic guitar in woodland, gurning space alien baby and splodgy studio snaps of the artists at work.

Band Profile: The ABC Club

Zandra Klievens - Vocals Jordan Radcliffe - Guitar Jack Haigh - Bass Sam Marns - Drums David Barber - Guitar Shoegaze guitars and ethereal vocals are a well proven combination, and The ABC Club don't put a step wrong to disprove this.

Band Profile: Lower Cases And Capitals

Lower Cases And Capitals are a band from small town Pudsey, Leeds who deliver energetic, melodic, up-beat songs which are aimed at both a young and older audience.

Last Gang: Beat of Blue

'Beat of Blue' begins in earnest with a hardcore thrashing guitar introduction, but then it all turns out a bit light-hearted.

Band Profile: Friends of the Family

Drums - Chris Jackson Bass - John Summers Vocals / Guitar - Michael Burton Guitar / Vocals - Benjamin Dunn Formed at the tail end of 2004, Friends of the Family are a collective of songwriters who met while studying for one degree or another at the University of Bradford.

Blind Eye View: Perfume

There isn't a great deal that inspires on this 5 track EP. Opening song Perfume is about as good as it gets, with what seems to be their big song - it's as watered down as stadium rock gets.

Band Profile: El Cartel

El Cartel, are a band made up from a university project which shortly afterwards evolved into an actual band.

RSJ: The Day After

Down tuned guitars and bass - relentless drumming, raging eclectic vocals. I love this EP. First song "Glutton for Punishment" kicks off with a clean sounding guitar chord into some serious riffage.

Juxtaposition: Take a Holiday

Taken from the forthcoming 5-track EP, Take A Holiday is one of Juxtaposition's more accessible songs.

The Tennessee Traincrash: Untitled

Yes!. It's very good. Panic over. Notes as follows: Magazine: is "Run, Run, Run" interfering with "Born to be Wild" up against a wall in a Leeds back lane.

Band Profile: The Lost Souls

Leeds-based rock band.

Sear: Untitled

It's been a while since I first listened to this CD. When I received it, I used to play it whenever I was trying to relax, it has that sort of ambience to it.

Mark Wilson @ Mixing Tin

The common man's James Blunt, but with better lyrics is how I would describe Ali Whitton as he opened up a remarkable acoustic based night at the Mixing Tin.

Hatch: 16 Year Divide

When I received this EP from Dave I knew absolutely nothing about Hatch or their music so this is a new experience for me!

Band Profile: Baseburner

Formed autumn 2004, Baseburner will stop at nothing to get their music heard. When asked what they play the four piece outfit simply reply 'RAWK!' and get over excited.

¡Forward, Russia!: Eighteen

Eighteen, taken from the excellent recent debut "Give Me A Wall" showcases a subtly different side to ¡Forward, Russia!

Band Profile: The Bribes

The Bribes have a sound which can be described as quirky and upbeat. A driving sound which instantly grabs you by the lugs and kicks you in the stones, leaving you heaving in a pile by the side of the road waiting for another kicking.

10 Days: The Future is Unwritten

"10 Days are one of the truly original bands on the underground currently." "Ten Days are a trio to be at the forefront of the next generation of alt.guitar bands in this city." With chronic press notices like those any band is going to struggle to make an impression.

Ben Kweller: EP Phone Home

Ben Kweller used to be the frontman of mid-nineties US grunge-pop act Radish, a band he formed when he was just 12 years old.

Session X: Energise EP

Hailing from the same village as myself, Session X arrive on the Leeds scene and rip through four tracks of furious funk tinged soulful tunes, guaranteed to have either a foot tapping or a head nodding.

The Dykeenies: Waiting For Go

The most striking thing about this single is how it takes seemingly disparate parts of guitar-based pop music from the last 25 years and turns them into a rolling, modern blast of a song.

The Darkness: Growing On Me

The coolest and at the same time most disturbing CD cover I've seen in a while contains a gem of a rock track.

Ridgevex: s/t

Not bad beginner stuff. But a long way from ready to roll up the slithering pile of shite that is modern popular music.

The Noise: Cheap Thrills EP

Cheap Thrills was recorded at Sunnybank Studios in June of this year. Tracks are: "Run or Die", "Lesbian Pleasure", "Dirty USA", "Country Song" and "Salvation".

Michael Mallinson Launch Party

New rising accoustic singer songwriter michael mallinson gets to gig with some of leeds heaveywait Musicians

Nutronstars: Melody Rules Everything (Handclaps and Fuzz)

If Carter USM had written theme tunes for midweek BBC family sitcoms, then it would have sounded somewhat like Nutronstars.

Nothing (Brighton): EP One

The aptly titled "EP One" is the first of 3 that will be released over the next twelve months from Brighton debutants Nothing.

Michael Rossiter: Like a Green Moray on a National Path

A very relaxing chilled out effort from Michael Rossiter, this roughly recorded demo is something of a little gem, sounding like the backing music for Watercolour Challenge or any other relaxing daytime show for your grandparents.

Little Japanese Toy: Calling Disused Numbers

This is a very nice single from the Star Harbour label. It tucks right into the New Art Underground as if Chicago or Montreal were just up the road.

Band Profile: The Signs

Dan Pearson - Vox/Guitar Sean Hatherley - Lead Guitar Mike Neilson - Drums Scott Coutts - Bass/Vox The Signs are here to stay..four talented and charismatic musicians brought together by a love of soaring melodies, roaring guitars and seismic drums, the boys have a knack for creating radio-friendly choruses made to be sung around stadiums around the world.

My Morning Jacket: Sweatbees EP

Ok, lets get it out of the way. The Flaming Lips. There, I said it. It's something My Morning Jacket are going to have to live with; people will always make comparisons.

Cognoscenti: Untitled

"You Alight: Reduction" with an out of tune guitar isn't a great first impression, but as the tune kicks in it has quite a nice hook to it.

Umlaut: Untitled

There must be something in the water down in Derby, as Umlaut recorded this three track EP down in the mid(ish)lands.

Staerimto: Untitled

Staerimto can be described as lush, poignant, quirky folk. In this DIY solo effort lead by John Perry there are moments of brilliance and also emptiness.

The Bellrays: The Red, White and Black

The down and dirty bass guitar riff of "Remember" kicks off this second Poptones offering from The Bellrays before some rolling drums interrupt proceedings along with strangled guitar for company and then we're off into a rifftastic headlong dash to the chorus.

The Features: The way it's meant to be

Never one to shy away from publically stating the bleedin' unobvious - some might say to leave our readers in a state of confusion - I'll say that for significant portions of The Features' new single The way it's meant to be they remind me of Mclusky.

Finch: Bitemarks and Bloodstains

"Now I'm stealing her body and taking her home". Nate Barcalow has issues. Finch mean business with 'Bitemarks & Bloodstains', lifted from already released album number 2 'Say Hello To Sunshine'.

Last Night's TV: Better Than That

This CD was a challenge to me as I am not used to reviewing acoustic material but I thought I would give it a go.

The Killers: All These Things That I've Done

The Killers are probably the most aptly-named band around at the moment, after having whipped, bludgeoned and slayed their way across the British music scene with sharp ties and nicely-pressed trousers.

Band Profile: Empi5

Formed from the remnants of two of the most popular bands to come out of the Wharfe valley in ten years - The Blankets and The Lash.

The Chiara L's: s/t

The Chiara L's, named aptly after front-woman Chiara Lucchini, are a sprightly, naïve, fun, bundle of scratchy guitar pop.

Band Profile: Bipolar Bear

Five-piece who formed together in their first year at Nottingham Uni. Through shared influences and ideas of what is perceived as good started playing together.

Monte Carlo: Trilogy #1

This is an interesting idea. Monte Carlo are filling three CD-Rs with songs, and giving them all away at live gigs and through their website.

Samsa: To Conquer

Samsa are a not unappealing proposition, given to guitar blasts and lyrical outpourings that are - at least - comprehensible.

The Pocket Gods: Lost

There are six tracks of home-made music-like stuff here. Track 6 is called "Danube" and it lasts for 17 minutes and 28 seconds.

Mommy & Daddy: Live How You Listen

I read the biog and listened to the CD; I read the biog again and listened again; I re-checked the biog and listened a couple more times; I gave it to a friend - he read the biog and listened, he also re-read the biog and listened again; We both turned to each other and shrugged!

Shy Child: Summer

Appropriately here is a review of a song called "Summer" just as the weather turns wet and cold... no hang on it's always been wet and cold.

Pete's Sake: If that's what you really want

CD single from this Welsh 4-piece, pretty straight up SoCal sounding pop punk. Complete with American accent.
