Formed only 6 months ago, Wakefield trio Metro play spiky, garage pop. And with some distinction. Opener 'Career opportunities' warbles confidently enough, echoing Lush at their aggressive while 'My lover' is a long lost Belly b-side, all longing vocals and high strung guitars.

The Cribs @ Leeds Festival 2006
Last year in the Radio 1 tent The Cribs gave a performance that completely won me over, becoming not just a band with good pop tunes but now the ability to deliver them in the live arena with the same quality they managed to capture on record.

Little Big Men to play at Race for Life 10th Anniversary run...
Leeds band, Little Big Men, could be forgiven for thinking all their Christmas's have come at once this Sunday, as 6,000 women in shorts run towards them.
Having played at The Cockpit before to only a handful of people, it wasn't looking good for Look See Proof when myself and my friends walked in to The Cockpit to find only one couple sat in the corner.
Wakefield is the place for sure. Here's another talented bunch with a future ahead of them. It's not fully realised in the demo, with its tendency to try and sound like a "proper record".
The third offering from our very own Wakefield trio's second album 'The New Fellas' is yet another slice of charming indie pop responsible for securing the hype surrounding the so-called 'New Yorkshire' movement at the moment.

Various Artists: Sounds of the Rhubarb Triangle
Whilst the 'Rhubarb Triangle' historically describes that polygonaceae-rich patch of land between Wakefield, Rothwell and Morley, I suspect that this compilation celebrates the musical output of the first-named metropolitan outpost.

Piskie Sits: The Secret Sickliness
You may not realise it (because the NME hasn't told you so) but slacker-rock is about to make a timely comeback.
Having never seen or heard of Wrinkle until a friend told me I should go - I had no idea what to expect.
They hail from Wakefield. A lady I thank you and 3 Gentlemen folk. Spangly bittersweet guitar melodies been the sound that the masses may or may not sway along to.
Arctic Monkeys: When The Sun Goes Down
Despite Arctic Monkeys' front man Alex Turner's antipathy for media comparisons to their Yorkshire (elder) cousins Kaiser Chiefs -and who can blame him, for they clearly do not sound alike- we should not forget the similarities in their meteoric rise in popularity and whilst they are still relative newcomers in age terms, both have achieved so, so much in just over 12 months; household names is termed not unwisely.
I know I shouldn't complain but what is happening? We've buggered it on the global warming front. Upstairs in The Fenton was the last place I wanted to be on this overly heated Friday evening, if it wasn't for the superb line up of melodic punk bands.

LEADTHEWAY was formed in 2002 with the sole intention of rocking Wakefield to its very foundations with their own brutal brand of raging political melodic Hardcore.

Hidden behind a Wakefield office block lies the Snooty Fox. After a chance meeting with Xi, we get directions to the venue, which is to be part of Xi's whirlwind tour of the Mainland's shores.
The first act to play the bigger stage of the Cockpit tonight are Ins and Outs. The Leeds-based band stumble through a set of 'lager rock', accompanying two big pairs of lungs which concentrate on being as loud as possible, instead of the idea of tuning. What did entertain the crowd was probably more to do with their unique dance moves.
Come with me on a little journey in time all the way back to late 2001 when this reviewer was reluctantly in Heaven and Hell with some pissed-up pals.

Colin Mounsey: Where Did Everything Go So Badly Wrong?
Colin Mounsey has issues: "This man created evil, this man created pain" just two of the accusations labelled at Daniel O'Donnell's favourite bearded man on 'Fuck You Jesus'.
Formed only two years ago, this debut album from the Wakefield four piece combines rock and roll passion with soulful, blues tinged dynamism.
Unlike the stoners who often use them, The Blueskins barely give you time to breathe, let alone skin up.
The Last Three Months Are Blank...? Scott Silverlode Writes....
Good morning, noon or night to all you Loders out there. Through the most undemocratic of processes I have been nominated to supply with your long-over due mouthful of all things Silverlode. It's been a wopping three months since the last news update and you'd probably think there'd be lots to tell you, and well...you'd be right.
Various Artists: DTTR Compilation: Out Of The Woods And Trees
Responsible for a roster which contains the likes of The Pigeon Detectives and ¡Forward, Russia!, there is no doubt that the mighty Dance To The Radio label has played a major part in the recent explosion of music coming out of Leeds.
Recently, there's been a contrast of sorts when going out - some nights can be spent bumping into some of the most passionate promoters and talented musicians the city can offer; people who have a genuine enthusiasm for the music scene in Leeds.
The Research @ Brudenell Social Club
Quite what The Engine Room think they're doing by opening the evening with The Nervous Shakedown, I do now know.
Faithless @ Litestructures Studio (Wakefield)
So tonight I am a walking, talking advert for MySpace. Each instructed to wear a MySpace sticker as a pass and given a complimentary MySpace t-shirt, the 260 competition winners and 40-or-so industry/press types gather outside Elland Road football stadium, in shocking temperatures, on a blustery Friday evening. There's a nervous excitement in the air. The competition winners - and, indeed, some of the members of the press - have no idea where they are about to be taken, in order to see one of the UK's most prolific dance acts in an intimate warm-up show for their upcoming tour.
Liam Stone: I Didn't See My Reflection For The Entire Month Of March
18-year-old Mr Stone has lovingly nurtured and raised a small bedroom masterpiece. First track 'The Last Rose' is a perfect, aching tale of loss.
Jeepster look uncomfortable. Their Noel Gallagher-style rock ballads are underpinned by some nice piano and Hammond organ, but like a potato sandwich, they also lack intrigue.

Never saw it myself, but full Brucey bonus points for the transformation of the Fav. Once noted for its triple Moldovan vodka's that were a liver defying £1.50, it made a great host for Saturday's inaugural Bad Sneakers.
The Labels @ The Bedroom (Wakefield)
Tonight at The Bedroom sees WEAREYOU (of Thursday night @ Carpe Diem fame) expand its reaches to Wakefield.
From Autumn To Ashes @ Cockpit
Mixed bills can (sometimes) be amazing. Other times however, they can kill any atmosphere that there may have been for any of the bands individually.
Various Artists: The Spills / Piskie Sits - split single
'Ghost of The Day' gets off to a shaky start, with front man Slater slurring his vocals over the sound of a single chord being plucked over and over again.
Bonsai Kittens: The Big Laugh Happy Happy Joy Joy Album
It sounds just like the cover: cuddly, playful, pert, sharp clawed and perfectly miniaturised. That's all you need to know about this six-tracked litter tray of feline droppings from the Bonsai Kittens.
Ten Floors, a totally unique 4-piece piano-based indie/rock band, are an act that have successfully established themselves as one of the most exciting and dynamic unsigned bands today, sweeping a breath of fresh air over the North of England, and beyond.
Easy Now All Stars @ Hard Rock Cafe
I hate to start anything on a negative point but... Flaming Lips! There. I got it out of my system. Not that it's a bad thing sounding like the 'lips, but it has to be a drawback when you realize that people could actually mistake your songs for unreleased 'lips tracks.
Considering the torrential rain wiping out anything on the streets across Leeds, the Well was surprisingly full.
I arrived at The Vine late to see there was a change to the original line-up for the night. Wakefield three-piece Soberskin had conceded their slot third on the bill to open the night.
The Tennessee Traincrash @ The Vine
The intimate carpet, curtains and ceiling lights of the Vine's upstairs room dispense a surreal good humour to all who have entered the packed-out space, up here on the edge of abnormality.
The Hair make me want to do reasonably mucky things to people. I think. I'm not sure. Either that or maybe find a partner to relive certain aspects of 'Dirty Dancing' with right there and then on the shiny wooden floorboards of The Faversham, except we'd incorporate more modern and perhaps more subtle dance moves whilst substituting those items of footwear now relegated to the depths of a chiropodist's hell with slightly more comfortable shoes.
The Rocket Bar does not look very welcoming to The Old House tonight as they take the stage, fewer than 30 people are in the room watching though this soon changes as the blast through opener Platoon.
Sky Larkin @ Leeds Festival 2007
Turbofruits - The Carling Stage Hailing from Nashville these fresh faced blues-punks are a thrilling kick off to the day.
The Paddingtons @ Joseph's Well
Matt Knee is the smiliest drummer I have ever had the pleasure to watch! It made my night to see someone up there who was clearly enjoying every moment and who was not too ashamed to show his excitement.
So here we are at the Refectory, the house lights go down and on comes Giant Drag. If you have never seen or heard of Giant Drag before then here is your first impression of them.
Tupamaros @ Royal Park Cellars
First - an apology to NONE OF THEM KNEW THEY WERE ROBOTS - as I trotted down the steps of The Cellars for this my first "Collective AKA" night, I heard the final chord of their set and saw the singer lie down on the stage.
OFM @ Counting House (Pontefract)
"Doncaster's finest" reads the promo. Overzealous PR, or straight-laced fact? My mission - uncover the truth.
Leeds Music Scene asks This Et Al some burning - or at least mildly broiling - questions in the wake of some storming dates in the North and in anticipation of the release of the Figure Eight EP...
Arctic Monkeys are: Alex Turner: guitar, vocals Jamie Cook: guitar Andy Nicholson: bass Matt Helders: drums Maybe you're about to read this and find out about a band called Arctic Monkeys.

In the cavernous grime of the Well, it is forever night time. Forever a luminous green-tinged, stale tobacco-clad dark age.
One Bullet Left @ Snooty Fox (Wakefield)
The Snooty Fox in Wakefield is slightly different to the majority of pubs that you'll will have no doubt drank in.
Truvine @ Tut'n'Shive (Wakefield)
So this is the location for Wakefield's newest acoustic night (featuring two non-acoustic bands tonight, just for the hell of it).
Ah, Players. The Landlord looks grumpy, the beer is rubbish, and it's full of teenage nu-metal fans. I don't know where else you'd want to be on a Friday night, especially when there are bands on...
Skint & Demoralised @ Escobar (Wakefield)
We met a very dapper looking Matt Abbott (lead singer and songwriter of Skint & Demoralised) dressed in a fashionable grey suit before the gig as he was greeting people by the door and giving away demo CD's.
Arriving early as I knew the small venue would be rammed, I am surprised that there is to be no live music until 8.30pm.
The Long Blondes @ Escobar (Wakefield)
Word to the Louder Than Bombs crew for a quality line up, and the disappointed looks in a queue that from just 8.15pm had to sit out a one-in-one-out situation tells a story in itself!
The Terminals @ Escobar (Wakefield)
Mother always said, "If you can't say anything nice, then don't say anything at all". With that in mind perhaps I should just progress directly to talking about Jack Afro.
The Delamores @ Escobar (Wakefield)
Firstly it must be made clear that at 2am this morning I was still to be found amateur mountaineering/forest-fire-avoiding after a party in a remote wood somewhere out towards Huddersfield and so my mental capacity is not at its best for remembering all of the events which unfolded at tonight's Louder Than Bombs session.
The Sunshine Underground @ Escobar (Wakefield)
Well, today was a wonderful day. Vinyl was bought, satisfying and exhilarating decision was made to quit godawful job, gig was attended.
I like Milburn a lot. They're one of the reasons I started reviewing because you never know when you'll be sent a gem of a CD to cover that you just absolutely love.
Dee Dyson @ Tut'n'Shive (Wakefield)
Okay. Let's get you up to speed. Tonight is the last night at the Tut N Shive, of the Wakey acoustic Thursday night shenanigans.
Chevron @ McDermotts (Wakefield)
Wandering into McDermotts on Saturday night I noticed that tonight held the promise of music. Four bands whose apparent self-proclaimed musical leanings sounded tempting (if beer mat flyers are to be believed).
Mr Shiraz @ McDermotts (Wakefield)
Despite the poor turnout (dwindling audience levels appears to be a regular observation around the city recently) two of Leeds' best bands at the moment played particularly progressive sets in their personal development.
The evening kicked off with new lads BAZOOKA JOE. I am told that this was their first show. They definitely deserve credit for their performance, they put on an excellent show with some pretty damn good pop/ punk tunes which got the kids pretty warmed up -like they needed it - I think it was the sweatiest show I have been to all year.) Plenty of people were up dancing especially for the outstanding cover version of Celine Dione's "My heart will go on." Watch out for them in the near future.
